The all-new Fathom� II Lever Drag reels take a class-leading reel and raise the bar even more. New models, sizing, features, and optimized billfish models round out the assortment to give a model for every application. Integrating the palm side plate and frame allows the Fathom� II Lever Drag reels to be more compact in hand and increases strength. The Pull-to-Turn preset knobs allow the angler to truly set it, and forget it. At the Fathom's� core is a stainless steel main and pinion gear and a forged and machined aluminum spool for maximum durability.

I only use this reel for one tuna trip each year. Smooth operation, two-speed was a great upgrade from my one-speed reels. Landed a 65# and 77# yellowfin tuna on the same day with this reel winning the biggest fish on a six day trip running 65# braid with 60# Seaguar fluorocarbon line.

I love Penn reels. I own about ten of them. But…I am gonna pass on the Fathom 30ld. I don’t really care for the plastic drag lever or ramp. Actually it looks quite small for a size 30 reel. In the pic, to the right is the Fathom ii 30ld. To the left is a Talica 20ii A. Big difference, huh? Anyway, that’s what it looks like out of the box. What you see is what you get, boys. Solid reel and preformed as expected. Highly recommend at under $300

Used Fathom II 30 to land a couple bluefin tuna in the 70-80lb range. Going in and out of low speed gear was flawless. The reel did a good job handling the fish in high speed and in low speed. I did not feel at any point during the fight as though I was undergunned. I also used this reel to land several California Yellowtail un the 15-25lb range later that day as well. For 1 solid days worth of big game fishing the reel performed as expected and still felt the way it did out of the box. Pros: Construction is solid. Reel holds a ton of line for its compact size. I also like the gear selector and T habdle on this one over the previous version. May not be important for most anglers but it is a good looking reel. Cons: The finish on this reel easily chips and scratches. The drag pressure isn't as consistent and doesn't feel as quality as the 1st generation black and gold Fathom IIs. I thought drag was going to be a little sticky at much higher drag pressures but no issues there so far. The drag lever is also made of plastic instead of aluminum lever on the 1st gen. I also prefer the drag pressure adjustment on the gen 1s as well. Wasn't a big fan of having to pull it out to make the adjustments. But, it wasn't a big deal. Would I recommend this reel to mt friends and family? Sure, if it's on sale for under $300. At $330 I would rather spend a little bit more on something more premium. But, even at $330 you will not be undeserved with this reel. Plain and simply put it got the job done. ... show more

Ambidextrous

These reals are not ambidextrous. You either have to order a left hand or a right hand. If you don’t you will get the wrong one.
