  • So far, I'm loving it
Style: Battle Ii Combo Size: 6000 - 9' - Medium Heavy - 2pc
I bought this for a trip to the Outer Banks, but to be honest I've been nervous because of all the reviews about the rod snapping. I used it for surf casting nearly every day, sometimes twice a day while in NC and it performed great. I caught roughly 40 fish and the rod was fine. I really love the reel, though a 6000 was overkill for what I was fishing for. The reel was smooth, with no quirks. There was plenty of drag and bail action was great. I didn't catch anything that would overly challenge the rod, but for surf casting and catching Mullet, Spot and Mackerel it was perfect. Also, the price I paid for the combo was roughly the price of the reel by itself, so i'm not that worried if I have to replace the rod at some point. UPDATE: I bought a smaller 300 combo for freshwater and so far so good. The reel is fantastic and no major problems with the rod. That set was more expensive, but it wasn't much more than the reel itself, so again, if the rod breaks down the line, replacing it isn't the end of the world. UPDATE 2: Caught a bunch of good-sized blue gills and a largemouth that weighed a few lbs today. No issue at all with the freshwater rod. Reel was smooth on the retrieve using crankbaits. UPDATE 3: I’m up to close to 100 fish on the 6000 and so far no issues with the rod. I caught several good sized sand sharks in Cape May and a large Skate at Sandy Hook and brought both in with no trouble. I still wouldn’t say I’ve overly challenged the rod but it is definitely holding up to constant use. ... show more

  • Can’t go wrong for less than $100!!
A complete rig for less than $100! Penn is an awesome brand so you can’t go wrong. Got this one for kayak fishing. 7’ is perfect as so I can reach around the bow and stern of the kayak with ease. I’ve been using it for jigging but it also Does well casting. The reel is nicely balanced and operates smoothly. I highly recommend this set up especially for the price. Getting it delivered to me was a bit of an ordeal. Not the sellers issue, it was the carriers fault. They actually lost it so the seller sent out a 2nd one with no issues what so ever. • Picture of fish / rod and reel.
I have purchased this rod and reel combo . The item was delivered in a few days in a well packaged tube box. I opened the package and checked it out. I then took it to my second home on the coast. I was fishing for an hour and caught a 12" stingray which as soon as he broke water, So did the tip. I had to go back to the house and grab anothe rpole. I been fishing for 30 years and never had a pole tip break while catching a fish. i did slam the door on a pole but that was my fault. this sucker just snapped. In disgust, i took pictures and left the pole at the house which is 300 miles away. I decided to call Penn and see if they can warranty it as its only a few weeks old and used once. i am not chaep but its the principal. I submitted 2 pictures to Penn where you can see the tip missing which is obvious and they called it " marginally visible." This is a 12 megapixel camera. When you blow it up, you can see the individual windings for each eye.. They also wanted the reel model # which even blown up is fuzzy but you can tell it starts with btl and ends in 4000. . penn states they need this to complete warranty. I dont have an issue with the reel, just the rod. I just dont think that customer service from PENN is worth anything. They have lost my business forever. I own several other Penn products but it was bought in a different time and a different era . I would not recommend anything from PENN as there are other companies out there. ... show more

  • Reliable and Durable
I've been using this fishing rod and reel combo for years now, and it's still going strong! The full metal body and heavy-duty components have held up incredibly well against big saltwater gamefish. The HT-100 carbon fiber drag system is both smooth and powerful, allowing for effective handling without sacrificing performance. ... show more

  • Good at everything, but not perfect at anything.
I’ve wanted a penn battle for a while now. Ive had a fierce for a few years now and I really enjoy it. It’s however a surf reel size so that is kind of a single use reel. When I saw this I wanted something that could pull double duty. I have a daiwa in a 3000 and my fierce is a 8000. I wanted something that would fit somewhere in the middle that wouldn’t be under powered against jacks, blues, sharks, Bonita, etc but wouldn’t feel like absolute overkill on smaller fish like reds and specks here in central Florida. I ended up with the 6000 paired with the 7ft rod. I under stand the 6000 is kind of a black sheep in the lineup but I find it perfect as an all rounder. Even while kayak fishing I’m not worried about being under powered on most hookups and the 7 ft rod is plenty long for my purposes. The reel is big. It’s for all intents and purposes a 5000 but with a bigger spool. I run .4 mm braid on it and it spooled up nicely and casts very well. The previous issues with windknots and the battle must have been worked out. As I haven’t had an issue yet but it may be too early to tell. I did end up having to swap the reel to a different rod because the rod cane damaged and missing a guide, not sure what happened there. But amazon took care of me so I can’t complain too much. Just couldn’t use the rod. But for the price I paid and amazon swiftly helping I can say I’m not dissatisfied. I had an extra gx2 that I put it on so it worked out and I’ll get another battle rod if I can find one that’s not part of a bundle. To sum it up I find the 6000 great. It fills a gap between surf reel and light tackle, (yes I consider a 3000 light tackle) I works bigger lures very well and it does very well for chunking our bigger baits as well. I got mine used (like new) and the price put it inline with some Shakespeare setups. But even at full price around 100-120 it’s a worthwhile setup if you’re in my situation. If you’re looking for a starter setup to fish the inlets and maybe some light surf and rivers I’d say get a 3-4K with a 7-8 ft rod. You’ll have more fun because even smaller fish feel bigger and who doesn’t like that? Tight lines everyone. ... show more
