  • Penn.... no need to say more... and Half the price of Bass Pro!? Buy this now!
Size: 6000 Style: Battle III
I almost purchased this from Bass Pro this weekend but decided to hold off. Then I got on Amazon and saw it for only $79. This is $149 ON SALE at Bass Pro. I had to buy it. The reel is sturdy and reels ultra smooth. I can't want to load this up with some 60lb braid and go haul in a big Grouper! Recommended! ... show more

  • The best I've owned
Size: 4000 Style: Battle III
Really tough built. Worth every penny. Not like most of the plastic junk stuff that's being processed. Not made like this awesome Penn battle 3 reel.

  • 6000 High speed
Size: 6000 Style: Battle III High Speed
I was reluctant because the reels are cheaper than the actual website and no images given show the HS red and black reel, but I took a shot and it is the actual reel. Comes with all the info extra washers and it’s packaged in the penn box. I got the 6000 HS and the 5000 and they are both very smooth and virtually silent. The weight is not as bad as some say. The 6000 is not nearly as heavy as I imagined it would be. I could easily fish all day with these reels with no fatigue. Ready to hit the beach and drill some monsters! • Customer service meh...
Size: 3000 Style: Battle III
I surf fish often. I am usually knee deep in water and the reels get splashed as waves hit me and splash up. They rarely get dunked completely but it sometimes happens for very short periods so it's mostly salt water intrusion that I am concerned about over time. Sand intrusion has never been an issue. I disassemble and grease/oil the reels myself on a regular basis. I have owned 4 Battle II reels. All have performed well but all have had the same issues. The bearings hold up surprisingly well. I have rarely had a bearing failure if maintained. The gears however are made out of a metal that corrodes and wears relatively quickly. The brass pinion gear also corrodes and seems to wear or distort under continued use. The good news is the metal bodies are rigid and hold up/do not distort so I just order new gears and the reels function excellently. (BTW...If you are looking for a light weight reel, these are not it...they are not super heavy but not light either) The new Battle III has several improvements. The gears are CNC machined and seem to be of nicer quality. There is has been one problem. In the pictures you will see the crosswind bar. This essential little part in the new Battle III is machined very thin on the back side. My relatively new reel was functioning well but I disassembled it for its first maintenance and found the bar to be broken but still attached and functioning. To me it appears that this seems like a design flaw. The part is too thin on the back edge and from the pictures I think you would agree. I was nervous putting in the replacement part because I was concerned the screw pressure would break it. I called Penn customer service. I described the issue and offered to send photos. Once I told the agent I was surf fishing with it he kind of cut me off and said basically they didn't cover the reel for that kind of use. Now they are promoted as a salt water reel and especially good for surf fishing so I was not so happy. He was pretty firm about this. I asked if they would at least send out a replacement part. He said they do not send out parts. They also have few parts in stock because of supply chain issues and referred me to a third party, Mystic Reel Parts. I could have sent in the reel for repair but at my own expense. Anyway...decent reel for the price. Design, drag, bearings, housing are all good. If you are a regular user, frequent maintenance is the key (not just a spray down with a hose) and be ready to replace gears. Customer service leaves something to be desired. Your mileage may vary. ... show more

  • Feel$ very $mooth
Size: 10000 Style: Battle III
My Wife (a Citizen of) & I bought property overlooking the Ocean in the Philippines, @ a distance of just 1/3 of a mile from the beach. Surf fishing is going to be a major part of my life. I bought the 10,000 (for $120) & out of the box, it feels a bit heavy (but this is one big reel), but it is Super Smooth. I'll pair it up with an 11' Ocean Angler Rod. I also ordered a 6000 (for $106, it arrives tomorrow & i can't wait to feel how smooth it is), that I'll pair up with a 12' UglyStick...& then I have a Penn Fathom 6 (baitcaster) on an 11' UglyStick...I have an 8000 Finn-Nor, an 8000 & 6500 Okuna (all spinners) also & will be looking for rod set ups for those reels as well... I'm retired & live in the Midwest. I'm looking forward to no more winters, burying my toes in the sand & hauling in the fish. I just want to be prepared for most anything Mother Nature serves up. When I'm not Fishing, I plan to be Golfing. I once heard... If You Fish, You don't Golf & if You Golf, You don't Fish...Well, guess what ? The 10,000 & 6000 together, for $226, is a great buy. Personally, I don't need top of the line equipment, I just need equipment that'll get me across the finish line. Once I took the reel out of the box & spun the handle on it, gave it a few turns, I was very pleasantly surprised. It is silky smooth. For the price, and considering the size, I was expecting it to shake & grind like a box of nuts and bolts, but instead, it was a symphony of silence. I was dumbfounded. True, I haven't wrapped it with line, I haven't casted it, and I haven't felt a Fish on the dummy end of this thing, but if first impressions count for anything, this 10,000 is going to serve its intended purpose, quite well. As I mentioned, it's weighty. But I plan on wading out just over knee deep & chucking some bait (shrimp or live bait) out on the Ocean floor, allowing free line, until I get to the pole holder, tightening up the slack & then parking myself under a shade canopy, in a comfy chair, and wait for the good times to roll... Hopefully in a year or 2, I'll follow up this review, with an actual usage review. But for now, all I can do is tell You my first impressions, and my first impression tells me, to tell You, to take advantage of this sale & order You a Battle III, so You can see for Yourself, how smooth these reels are, for the $$ & I dare You to write a better review on a 10,000 series reel, for the same amount of $120. ... show more
