This is a cute little hatchet. It is obviously very well made. In my opinion it is almost worthless for the kinds of tasks you'd traditionally think of performing with a hatchet. I'm hopeful that I will find a proper use for this (I read it was originally designed to kill fish by knocking them on the head with the poll). I thought it might be great for shaping small wood objects but will require a lot of skill to compete with other tools. I suppose it is (at this time anyway) like a nice piece of jewelry -- The only downside is that any of my woodworking friends would likely laugh at me (especially if they knew how much this little gem costs). I'm giving this a good 4-star rating as it is a high quality product. Functionally, it seems even more limited than I thought when I made the purchase, and I suspect it will take quite a bit of time to acquire the skill necessary to make this a cost-effective tool. As far as a backpacking tool I don't feel the weight to utility ratio really makes this a viable tool to carry long distances. I'm now realize that the GB Hand Hatchet would be a more appropriate tool for me (and almost anyone likely to read this review). Anyway, I suppose, like the insane people weaving their baskets, that I'll get my money's worth by spending many hours entertaining myself trying to figure how best to use this mini hatchet.

Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet Axe for Hunting or Camping - New! This is, without question, the finest hatchet I have ever used -- or even heard of. It is as small as a hatchet can be -- yet still retain the ability to chop reasonable-sized wood. The maximum-sized tree or limb one could chop would be about 3" in diameter. You are not going to fell large trees with this hatchet, but, for backpacking, you don't need to. This tiny hatchet (just under 11" long, about 13 ounces total) is perfect for chopping small limbs for a fire. You can also hold it close to the head and use it like a knife. I take the Mini Hatchet and a tiny pocket knife when I go backpacking -- no other blades. I prefer this combination to carrying a "survival knife." The hatchet is better at chopping wood -- and a pocket knife is better at cutting small things -- than a survival knife. THE MINI HATCHET IS EXTREMELY SHARP. As I discovered (while demonstrating hatchet safety to my son, no less), even a small slip, using the weight of the hatchet head only, can lead to a trip to the doctor for stitches. This is an adult tool, for adult use only. This is not one of those silly legal warnings you see on products (or even a complaint), just a note that the Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet is FAR sharper than any hatchet I have ever used. I love a sharp edge, and the Gransfors Bruks certainly delivers. It also retains its sharp edge through an incredible amount of wood chopping. Each Gransfors Bruks product is hand-made by a crafstman, and the head is not painted or finished in any way. Other companies paint or buff their products to hide defects. The Gransfors Bruks craftsmen stamp their initials on their work; they do not sell products with defects. The Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet is the perfect tool to take backpacking -- a real tool for real bushcraft.

Just received my Gransfors Bruk Mini Belt Hatchet today. What a beauty...If I could only have one tool for wood...I'd cheat and make it two...the Gransfors Bruk Mini + the Gransfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet, which I also own. These are serious tools for the outdoors, none finer in the marketplace, for managing many of the chores of bushcraft, either on the trail or at base camp. The craftsmanship is undeniable and properly cared for, they are once and done purchases. Good for life, plus something to hand down to the next generation. Best in Class, World Class, State of the Art, Crème de la Crème...whatever adjectives you like to describe excellence, Gransfors Bruk is worthy. Get one or a pair, you will not be disappointed.

When I received this Mini-Hatchet, I thought it looked like a toy. But a toy it is not; the blade is razor sharp and can be kept that way easily. This hatchet will not only work as an effective tool but could serve as a weapon if needed. And this little gem fits nicely in the glove compartment of my Toyota Corolla - with plenty of room to spare! It would also fit easily in the smallest day pack. The only reason I didn't give this hatchet a five star rating is that the sheath, though well made and of excellent leather, doesn't feature any means of attaching it to a belt and leather has tendency to sweat. About a week after I ordered this hatchet, I saw it advertised with a belt holster in addition to the sheath from the same seller I had purchased mine from (The Olsen Store in Germany). Also, I haven't yet been able to figure out why this little hatchet, which I believe is the smallest one in the Gransfors Bruks line of products, is so expensive; its MSRP is $160.00 U.S. (though I found one for $139.00) as opposed to the next larger hatchet, the Widlife Hatchet, which sells for $112.00 (?) to $120.00 (?) U.S. At any rate, if you want compact, superlative quality in a tool you will cherish forever, you should treat yourself to one of these fine little hatchets.
