  • Great Kit, Excellent Instruction Manual
This kit is awesome. I bought it here on Amazon a few months ago, and just got around to using it because I was dreading performing this upgrade after reading about it, and seeing how many steps and delicate components were involved. The HDD assembly is seriously just about the last component still in the Mini's shell before you can remove it and perform the upgrade. Have to say, I am impressed. The kit comes with all the parts you need, including four Mac-specific screwdrivers, to remove and replace the necessary parts. What was really great was the absolutely excellent instruction manual - this comes with a small color booklet, with pictures and insets for the small items, and perfect instructions. As long as you have some degree of computer aptitude, and some patience, and follow the instructions to the letter, you can get this project completed perfectly in a couple of hours. Tech writers from other companies could learn a thing or two from OWC. One note of caution, all of the connectors in this are extremely small, so if you don't have good near vision, I strongly recommend purchasing some strong magnifying eyeglasses so you can see the components clearly and don't damage them. I also had one small deviation from the procedure, I didn't remove the antenna connector because I was able to swing the antenna plate out of the way enough while still attached to be able to remove the other components. The little snap on the wireless antenna connector is VERY easily damaged if you don't line it up just right. I have made that mistake on other systems in the past, where I tried to force it to connect and broke it. I didn't use the slow, original 500 GB HGST hard drive, I replaced it with a new 1 TB Seagate Firecuda, and then added a 500 GB WD Black I had laying around as the second drive. I probably could have bought a solid state drive, but this is basically a second desktop for me and a project computer, so I wanted to see how the Firecuda performs. Everything restored via Time Machine backup and booted up without a hitch, and all components appear to be working properly. *Update* was having issues with the Firecuda and extremely slow boot times and hanging in the Mac Mini. The WD black drive worked fine as a boot drive. I also had the same issue with another 2.5" Firecuda (2 TB) as a USB boot drive with another Mac computer, so there seems to be some compatibility issue with Macs and that drive type (I have a 3.5" Firecuda in a Windows machine, which works perfectly). I replaced with a 500 GB Toshiba SSHD and all is well for several days now, so no issue with the OWC kit. Just a heads up if you are considering buying one of these drives. I am very pleased with this. ... show more

  • ... more expensive iFixit kit but this ended up being perfect for my 2011 mac mini
I almost went with the more expensive iFixit kit but this ended up being perfect for my 2011 mac mini. The connector and parts are great quality, I inspected mine thoroughly so I didn't end up wasting time finding out it's defective after installation. As far as installation goes, it was not hard at all. I am pretty gutsy about electronics, but not an expert by any means and found it relatively easy. Definitely order some spudger sticks with this kit unless you have some already. Some installation tips: 1. Be very very careful with the IR connector. It is really fragile, I recommend using a pointy spudger to gently lift it up from back (where wires connect). This is the only "surgical" part of the installation in my opinion. 2. The metal grill that holds the wifi antenna can be a real pain to get back on. I recommend putting one screw into the top hard drive, then maneuver the grill in place. Trying to get it on, then screwing it down is more difficult I found. It will take some time to get it to "snap" back into place. 3. Don't do what I did and get it assembled and forget to put one of the plastic baffles back in place. I had to install the grill twice due to this! Not a problem if you follow the instructions. 4. Make sure your hard drive works before installation and apply power before putting the cover back on the mini to make sure the fans work. You could probably go a step further and make sure everything works before re-assembly but I like to live dangerously. Mostly obvious stuff but this is what I learned doing this and thought it might help others. Overall, great kit and totally worth the upgrade! ... show more

  • Great product. Easy installation and good quality
I was looking for the SSD installer kit to place a second hard drive in my Mac Mini, and this was the perfect solution for me! The instructions are very straight forward in the manual to walk you through how to take apart your Mac mini and put it back together again. I would highly recommend, being a former Apple technician, ALWAYS read ahead before attempting this. Make sure you read carefully through all these instructions and make sure you have all the proper tools BEFORE you attempt this! I would definitely also make sure you have an ESD safety strap attached to your wrist while attempting this repair. You do not want to cause giant pits and holes to occur in your IC chips and logic board from static shock. It's very real and can definitely occur and cause your mini to never turn on again. So, please be forewarned before attempting this, watch some youtube videos, or talk to some technician friends that deal with repairs all the time. You don't want something fun and simple to do turn into a nightmare for you. Be sure you have the correct Torx tools and the logic board removal tool for the Mac Mini 2011 and later model necessary to complete this repair. I'd recommend a blackstick or an ESD-safe equivalent plastic tool for removing cables and aiding you while you're inside the machine. Also, a very necessary tool to do this repair well. Also, be very clear that this kit DOES NOT include the tools necessary to do this repair! I've read reviews before giving these types of kits low ratings because the tools were not included. READ THE DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY! I'd recommend purchasing a SATA SSD drive from either Crucial, Newegg or TigerDirect for the best prices on them, besides here on Amazon. They have the best prices for SSD drives for Mac Mini's I've found. I used this kit in order to install my SSD inside and install my Mac OS on it, so the mini boots off the SSD and I used the stock drive that came with the mini as storage and as my file server. If you have all the right tools and do your research ahead of time before placing your SSD drive inside your mini with this kit, this will be a great addition to your Mac Mini! ... show more
