I've had my aura ring for a little over a month now. I was very hesitant about this purchase. For one it's one of the more expensive options for tracking biometrics on top of that you need to pay a monthly subscription to really use the thing. That being said it is worth every single solitary penny without a doubt. This thing gives you easily comprehensible data on pretty much everything from the very moment I'm typing this to long term trends. Sleep, fitness, vitality, stress, resilience and so much more. It's also a great educational tool providing you with tips and feedback along the way helping you reach your goals to become a healthier and more productive version of yourself. Here's an example of something that surprised me; this ring started reading and warning me of symptoms of illness before I really started feeling sick with the flu. It diligently kept close watch on my vitals and advised appropriately. It's been extraordinarily helpful in balancing effort with recovery so I don't overdue thing and also don't become complacent. I'm still learning new features and aura is still developing new features all of the time. If you're serious about tracking and improving your health and fitness this is the most useful tool I have found in changing my life second only to faith. The investments you can make in yourself having this much data and sound advice at hand is worth far more than the cost of this ring and subscription.     • Quite useful, despite some quirks

I bought the Oura 4 primarily to analyze my sleep, but I have ended up wearing it all day. I have an apple watch ultra that is fine for daytime activities. I thought the Oura would be better for analyzing sleep because it has the SpO2 sensors for oxygenation, and the battery lasts much longer after a charge than the apple watch. The information it gives me about the quality of my sleep is better than I expected, and I now have a better understanding of what my issues may be at night. It shows you when your oxygen levels varied during the night, which is useful, but one of its quirks is that it doesn't show you the actual timeline of blood oxygen values. I would really like to see the actual values and not just the periods of variability in a timeline. It does give the average value during sleep, and it seems to think my sleep is ok, which reassures me that I probably don't have sleep apnea. Also, I wore both my apple watch and the Oura for two nights, and they gave significantly different values for the total time awake during the night. From my own memories of waking up, the Oura seemed to be more accurate. Also, I came across a research study (paid by Oura) that compared it to the apple watch, and it claimed that the Oura was more accurate for judging time awake. My biggest surprise was today, when the Oura app told me that I was essentially under the weather and I should rest today. In fact, I haven't felt very well since yesterday. It was amazing to me that the Oura determined that. It said my nighttime temperature was elevated and my breathing rate higher than usual. But, in another quirk, it did not actually give me the numbers to back up these conclusions. Did Oura think I could not handle the truth? :) Oura likes to give general conclusions, like your activity levels are fine, your sleep was fine, etc, but it seems like it tries to avoid giving you all the raw data in some cases. I found that very annoying at first, but I am getting used to it. It does give you a time line of activity and HR. I have only had the Oura for a week, and the app has mentioned that it is establishing my baseline for the first couple of weeks. I assume that once the baseline is established, it will be able to tell me whenever I fall outside my usual range on different measures. That should be very useful. I didn't expect to like the Oura ring as much as I do, because I thought it might not provide much more information than my apple watch. But it actually does, at least during sleep. When I think I may be coming down with a bug, it is reassuring to know when the Oura thinks so too. It is also nice that I don't have to recharge it for several days. The Oura cannot replace an apple watch, of course, because it does not display messages and does not have access to apps that I use. The best of all worlds is to have both. ... show more

    • It’s like a spy—but in a good way

When the Oura rings first hit the market, I wanted one so bad that I applied for a writer job at Oura. I didn’t get hired—didn’t even get a call, actually, but their loss—but I still loved the concept and wanted one. For years, I kept looking at them, thinking, “I will get one someday,” but I always talked myself out of it. I finally ordered a sizing kit, and then—more than a year later—I finally ordered an Oura ring, and it has been life-changing. Okay, well maybe not life-changing, but it has been life-informing. It is the best sleep tracker, and it has helped me learn about what affects my sleep patterns. Last night, I decided to eat a hot fudge brownie before bed. I slept terribly. When I looked at my sleep score, it was down significantly and my readiness was low. The Oura app literally said, “Eating before bed—especially sugary foods—can negatively impact your sleep patterns.” Does this thing have a camera? Wow. It also let me know that I was getting a cold before I felt sick. I love my Oura ring, and it’s helping me make better choices and learn about my sleep patterns. Highly recommend it. ... show more
