  • Way better than the price would indicate...
Size: 8-Inch Dado
I have turned some very expensive wood into sawdust and regret. Surely with this tool I can do so at a much faster pace. I have never used a stack dado set before but some would-be-wood-worker-guys on YouTube make it look pretty easy, and most of them have their fingers. So how hard can it be? I threw away the instructions ‘cause, who needs those? When you have 3lbs of steel spinning at 6,000 rpm who cares about that? The center hole for the arbor is extremely close tolerance (and for good reason) which made installation and removal a bit challenging but when installed, very very secure. The instructions indicate the blade stack and shims are “under rated” or “under sized” to accommodate the nominal thickness of various woods. So I took them at face value and installed the 3/4” setup. Now, let me be clear, I have NEVER used a dado set before. I took out my calipers and measured the stack installed and tightened. Just short of .75” as promised. So far so good. Used a square to measure cut depth. So far so good. Set up the fence to center the cut at 4” from the desired edge. So far so good. With nervous anticipation green button, on. Soft start up, check. Dust collection, on. All seems to be going to plan. No noises. No vibrations. No issues. Time to put the wood to it! The cut quality was PERFECT! No tear out, no truly discernable ridges in the cut. The chippers made relatively clean cuts the whole distance. My first dado cut was 25” of pure success. The fitment of the dado was near perfect as far as I could tell. I glued it up, threw in a screw or four and all is well. I wiped the blades down as they had plenty of oil to protect them. The shipping/storage box is not pretty but adequate to protect them. Would recommend to anyone needing the occasional dado cut. ... show more

  • PLEASE READ. The shims that come with this stack are unsafe to use!
Size: 6-Inch Dado
I have made plenty of rabbets with this blade stack, as well as the 8" version. I would just use a bit more than 3/4" of the stack along with a zero clearance fence to make easy rabbets. Recently, I started making dados, where I need to dial in a precise stack thickness, and started using shims. I had an accident in my shop that I ASSUMED was something I was doing wrong. In essence, with a 3/4" stack, there isn't quite enough room for the arbor washer, so only the arbor nut is used. After a series of cuts, I turned off my table saw, and the blades continued rotating freely. To my horror, they began to drift into the throat plate, (down the arbor) chewing it up. I heard a CACHUNK, and hid behind a table to be cautious, until I could hear that the blades had come to rest (more than two minutes! these things have a ton of inertia!). Though the blade was totally performant while making the cut, after turning it off, the arbor nut had completely come off the arbor, and struck some of the blade teeth on the way down. After searching for the nut (and also finding two carbide blade teeth), I decided that was enough for the weekend. walking through the events in my head, I concluded that either I failed to tighten the arbor nut beyond finger tight, or the keyed arbor washer is 100% required for safe operation, and the experts who have been doing this for four decades without incident were just lucky, and I wasn't. After discussing with some of my peers, we were in agreement that if I'd truly used the tools properly, that shouldn't have happened. This weekend, I picked up ANOTHER one of these dado stacks (the 6" version), as they're reviewed very well and are cost effective. I set up a series of experiments, building up to a thicker dado stack, taking great care to appropriately torque the arbor nut, and turning the saw on and off, making short test cuts from an extra safe position then turning the saw off just to get a feel for it. When i set up cuts with the shims, I really played around with the right way to order it, how to get it on the arbor without jamming on the threads, and get the nut tight. These shims seem to have basically zero clearance bores, that fit extremely tightly on the arbor, so they take some handling to get into place. Regardless, even when using the arbor washer to shield the nut from reverse torque associated with the decelerating stack, the blades are able to eventually loosen enough to splin freely around the arbor, IF A SHIM IS IN USE. After repeated tests, I have found that when I do not use a shim, the cuts can be made safely (with or without an arbor washer). If I do use the shim, I am NOT consistently able to be sure it is properly seated and make safe cuts. These things turned the use of a dado blade from a normal shop activity to a nerve wracking game of roulette with death. I've picked up some magnetic shims with oversize inner diameters that stick firmly to the sides of the blade, and now I can make precise width cuts without worry. I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THE SHIMS THAT COME WITH THIS SET. NOTE: It is possible there is a compound failure, that my arbor nut is defective in some way, or that my arbor is a few micrometers above or below 5/8", and combine with the sub-optimal conditions of using a shim, the issue is exacerbated. I've ordered a replacement washer and nut from the manufacturer and will test again with those. ... show more

  • Dado dado dado, oh what I would do without you~
Size: 6-Inch Dado
It was one of the "gotta have it" item even though I've only used it few times to cut dado's in building a kitchen island that seems to be taking forever (time hates me apparently). The item came in a solid box with plenty of padding and while some of spacer washer was starting to show some rust, it was oiled enough I wasn't too concerned. As for the cut, it's almost perfect. I do still use a push stick or my favorite Grr-Ripper (I can never remember how many ARrrrrrrrrrrrrr's to add) because you never know if the board underneath will break off to chomp at my hand like Jaws. I'm not rich enough to buy Stop Saw either (and even then gotta play it safe) but I do love my hands for many things *cough* so even cutting a very shallow 1/4" dado, GRRRrrrrrripppper and other safety push stick/pad is used. I've had no issues as far as the quality of the cuts. They all seem to cut clean and square. The spacers and chippers are all working well and have cut through pine and hardwood with no issues. Yes, it's a pain to change out the blades unless you have a dedicated table saw just to have full time dado stack but ain't nobody got money for that...or space especially. But it's a must when doing multiple dado cuts precisely for cabinet drawers for example. Fits perfect every time. Get these ;) ... show more

  • Best used with zero clearance throat plate.
Size: 8-Inch Dado
I was initially disappointed with this set and figured "well, you get what you pay for." The cuts did not seem very clean. Then, I made a zero clearance throat plate and the cuts improved markedly, almost to the point of perfection. I use this primarily to cut dadoes in plywood when making drawer fronts. You can see the quality of the cut from the picture. The dado set comes with instructions regarding which combination of blades/cutters to use for each plywood width. Even though it compensates for "nominal width" plywood (not quite 1/2"), it still cuts a slot that is a bit too wide. I would prefer it cut a bit too narrow so that I would have the option to add a small shim to get me to the exact width, but that is me being a perfectionist. Overall, I believe I can recommend this product. ... show more
