  • 5 stars = 6 for performance, 4 for install
The bottom line is that this cutter produces a great quality surface that needs at most a final sanding before finish. Also creates much less load on the motor, less load on the drive rollers (therefore almost no snipe), less noise (but still noisy). Essentially you get a new level of tool. The installation requires significant disassembly of the planer, plan on hours not days. This is unavoidable but the instructions are clear with only a few mistakes that are not consequential, and the provided photos are plentiful. Installation notes, in no particular order: Use quality ring pliers (very stable) that don't have interchangeable heads (which aren't). The cutter head lock will be discarded. Wood is not strong enough to hammer the bearings into place. When the instruction say "wedge a board tightly" it really means place an approx 1/2" thick board to the side of the roller to jam and prevent rotation when you are loosening/tightening the roller. The gear box doesn't have to come out all the way, so just let it dangle from the speed control shaft. A cap head screw is referenced but is not included but the alternatives are obvious and work fine. The roller doesn't fit into the chassis with the cutters installed. Installing cutters needs to come later and is not mentioned in the instructions, is done after the roller is in place. Careful not to drop a cutter past the roller into the bottom of the chassis. Carefully seat each cutter, else you start to tighten with it out of line and not fully supported (carbide is very brittle). Torque for the cutters is 30 in-lb. Use a torque driver, don't guess. The roller comes in shipping grease of some kind, so wipe it down (at least) and you won't get much of a mess when you first run it. ... show more

  • Nice clean cut
Happy with the quality of it and the cuts are super smooth. Installation wasn't hard just took a little bit of time. Definitely recommend.

  • Good surface finish. Tricky installtion.
Produces a great finish on hard wood. Installation of cutters is tricky. No torque spec. was provided that I could find. Too tight and the cutter shatters. Too loose and the screw backs out during operation!. Broke 3 cutters. Needs Loctite. We'll have to see how they hold up over time.

  • Excellent DW735 Upgrade!
This thing was well worth the money. It took my DW735 from a mediocre, noisy, inefficient planer to a high performance, quiet, efficient unit. The old cutter head had blades that would dull out and chip in short order while planing white oak (I'm restoring a rotten old wooden boat, I do a lot of that). With this thing installed, I can power through even the gnarliest grain and knots with ease. It's awesome, and I've planed at least 50 board foot of oak so far (I've had it for a month) with no signs of the cutters dulling. Well worth it if you plan to be planing large amounts of hardwoods. The installation was easy, but the included instructions were a bit lacking. Thankfully there's plenty of tutorials on YouTube you can follow along with, and it doesn't matter what brand of cutter head they're installing, the procedure is the same for all of them. Buy it! You won't regret it! ... show more

  • Upgrade
Upgrade I’ve been putting off but happy with the noise reduction. Still some snipe, but smooth finish.

  • Manufacturing Defect - Fair Resolution
I recently installed a Fox helical replacement head on my Dewalt planer and, unfortunately, my experience was somewhat disappointing. After running clean white oak, jointed on two sides with no nails or screws, one of the teeth shattered, and it caused damage not only to the cutter head but also to the length of white oak. I contacted the manufacturer and they got me the replacements needed in a somewhat timely manner. ... show more

  • Torque settings and bearing installation tool.
I would have given this a 5 star, but buyers should understand this is a pain to install and lacks 2 critical items: the torque setting to attach the carbide bits to the helical shaft and a hollow tube device to knock the shaft and large bearing into the DeWalt planer. On first use, carbide bits sheared off and damaged a new planer and the helical shaft. Another user reckons the carbide bit screw torque setting is 30 in-lb and to use thread lock too. The manufacturer has not responded to multiple notes to them. Update. Item replaced and set carbide bits to 30in-lb with thread lock. Make sure to watch YouTube videos of installation. ... show more
