  • Amazing.
I've been putting this purchase of for a while, but now I wish I would have bought it sooner. I've heard mixed reviews about some of the other helical cutterhead brands, but Fox was consistently getting very good reviews. It is cheaper than the other brands, but the performance is amazing. I can't imagine the more expensive brands are better. It is significantly quieter, little to no snipe, no tear out on figured wood (so far), and a very good finish. Installation was easy. I was nervous about it, so I took my time and still finished in under an hour and a half. There are some good installation videos on YouTube. I put it to the test with a big cut on some 12.5" wide figured walnut, and it looks hand planed. It bogged down just a bit, but not as much as the straight knives. I'm using a basic 120v setup. 10/10 would highly recommend. ... show more

  • Amazed!! Best purchase of 2025
This arrived about 2 hours ago, I had my machine tore down waiting on delivery. I am so impressed with this!! It is so much quieter, runs exponentially easier, (the motor don't bog down at all anymore) and best of all, it eats hardwood like it's not even there. I ran a piece of well dried red oak thru, the finish is almost perfect and it has almost eliminated the snipe I was getting. Over all .. I think I'm going to like running this planer again... Great product!! Oh, the install was fairly easy and only took about an hour. The most time consuming was installing all the inserts. 10 STARS!!!! ... show more

  • 5 stars = 6 for performance, 4 for install
The bottom line is that this cutter produces a great quality surface that needs at most a final sanding before finish. Also creates much less load on the motor, less load on the drive rollers (therefore almost no snipe), less noise (but still noisy). Essentially you get a new level of tool. The installation requires significant disassembly of the planer, plan on hours not days. This is unavoidable but the instructions are clear with only a few mistakes that are not consequential, and the provided photos are plentiful. Installation notes, in no particular order: Use quality ring pliers (very stable) that don't have interchangeable heads (which aren't). The cutter head lock will be discarded. Wood is not strong enough to hammer the bearings into place. When the instruction say "wedge a board tightly" it really means place an approx 1/2" thick board to the side of the roller to jam and prevent rotation when you are loosening/tightening the roller. The gear box doesn't have to come out all the way, so just let it dangle from the speed control shaft. A cap head screw is referenced but is not included but the alternatives are obvious and work fine. The roller doesn't fit into the chassis with the cutters installed. Installing cutters needs to come later and is not mentioned in the instructions, is done after the roller is in place. Careful not to drop a cutter past the roller into the bottom of the chassis. Carefully seat each cutter, else you start to tighten with it out of line and not fully supported (carbide is very brittle). Torque for the cutters is 30 in-lb. Use a torque driver, don't guess. The roller comes in shipping grease of some kind, so wipe it down (at least) and you won't get much of a mess when you first run it. ... show more

  • Should Have Done This Sooner
I just finished installing this cutter head last night & I really like it. Installation was pretty straight forward & in total took about 3 hrs. Here's a few notes to make installation easier. Run the planer for 5-10 minutes before starting because that will warm up the drive belt & make it easier to remove. Buy a T20 Torx screwdriver with magnetic tip which will speed up installation of the insert retainer screws. A T20 'L' shaped wrench is provided but a screwdriver is easier to rundown the screws. Also, buy a 1/4" drive torque wrench from Amazon or Harbor Freight - doesn't have to be expensive. When removing the driven pulley on the old cutter head, rotate the pulley so the keyway is up after removing the nut. This way the really small 3/16" key won't fall out & into the nearest pile of sawdust. I had to make a new one. When installing the inserts, lay a towel on the planer platen under the cutter head so when you drop a screw and/or insert, it won't bounce & disappear in the machine base. When installing the inserts, first number each row of cutters on the cutter head 1,2,3 & 4, so you know which row you're working on in case it rotates out of position. The manual doesn't say anything about the insert installation, but the retaining screws should be tightened to 6NM / 53 In-Lbs. After installation I ran a board thru it a few times & it's quieter when cutting vs the original 3 blade cutter design. Overall, it's still noisy but not as bad. The cut finish on the wood is great - absolutely smooth. ... show more

  • Works GREAT
It took some time to get this part in and the machine working again. Well worth every second. While putting this cutting head in I discovered some other problem that the machine had. I’m sure it was my fault. The outer side of the dust duct rubbed against the impeller for dust control and welded them and the machine had very little suction. All the replacement parts fit and worked great. ... show more
