  • Good Quality, Good Finish
I bought this and installed it using a youtube video. It arrived in a well constructed package that was screwed together and very solid. The installation is a straightforward process. Compared to the old cutterhead, this new one is much quieter which is almost worth it by itself. The noise improvement is something the before and after youtube videos just don't do a great job of showing. The cut quality is also very very nice, leaving the kind of finish you'd achieve with a good hand plane. Compared to other cutterheads, this one has fewer inserts (45), but that actually might be a good thing when it comes to stress on the motor- there's fewer teeth engaged in the wood at any point in time. I have only run some test pieces through the planer, but if the carbide teeth are anything like the byrd teeth I have on my jointer they'll last a very long time. Because the teeth do less gouging, I'm confident that I can plane thinner pieces now without them splintering apart which was common with the old blades. I'd say this is well worth the investment if you already have the Dewalt planer and you're tired of how fast the straight blades wear out and how loud it is. I was considering upgrading to a more industrial type of unit, but I'm thinking I can make this work now. ... show more

  • Well worth the expense
I purchased the OEM diameter version for the Dewalt DW735X. Packaging/Shipping: First impression was the packaging and it was fantastic. Super strong/stiff cardboard screwed to wooden blocks that held the cutting head in place. Nicely wrapped and it had a thin sheen of oil to prevent rust/corrosion. The shipping was quick, arriving within 3-4 days. Installation: I marked the rows of cutters with a paint pen, laid out rows of tape with matching numbers and removed the cutters, laying them in the same order that they came out. Total time, less than 5 minutes. The new cutting head slipped right into place. I reinstalled the cutters, I was lucky to have a torque wrench that was perfect for the job, and finished closing up the machine. Total time from opening up the planer to putting the cover back on - 30-45 minutes. There are some great Youtube videos for doing this and they are super long. There are a couple that are equally good but they are much faster. Choose what works best for you. The extra cutters and screws were a nice tough, having two of the T wrenches in the package was very nice and the shipping packaging made a great storage box for the OEM cutter after it was removed. Use: I've run poplar, hickory, maple, oak and cherry through the planer since installing the cutter and it handles everything with ease and it does a fantastic job. I have absolutely zero complaints about this product. ... show more

  • Good quality, tricky install
I took a chance on this cutter over the Shelix I had been considering because it was about 25% less expensive. I can't compare it to the Shelix head to head but here are some of my observations from installing it and using it for about 1 hour. -Configuration is different from Shelix and there are 36 teeth and the Elephas vs 40 on the Shelix -Installation is exactly the same. I followed a youtube video for installing the Shelix and it is identical. -It definitely has a quality feel and is packaged quite well -no instructions come with it. a couple of cheap torx wrenches I did not use Some things to know before purchasing: -Installation is a serious undertaking, approx 2 hrs. 2 people would be helpful but I did it by myself. Requires some muscle. -You will need a decent set of metric sockets and allen wrenches. Sockets from 6mm to 24mm. -Snap ring pliers will make the job much easier. You will need internal and external, might want to order some with the cutter head if you don't have them -You'll also need a mallet, torx bits, and ideally an impact wrench to break the loctite on the screws you will need to remove -Plan on having your laptop next to you while performing the operation as there are a lot of steps and parts to keep track of The result: -Noticeable decrease in noise over OEM cutters -Seems like an increased load on the motor (expected a decrease) -Nice smooth finish ... show more

  • Worth It
I bought this when it was cheaper than then Shelix by a good margin - at least 20-25%. Now the Elephas seems to cost a bit more, and Shelix dropped their prices noticeably. That said, the only (speculative) reason the Shelix might be better is that there is more negative space beneath the carbide cutter heads. This MAY allow deeper cuts that remove more material easier, but other than that I can't see a benefit in one maker or the other. The Elephas installs exactly the same as the Shelix, leaves the same surface finish, and each of the cutter heads have 4 useable cutting sides (a standard practice). From what I can tell the Elephas has more mass in the cutter head so in theory would leave smoother cuts on shallower passes, though if the Shelix is lighter it will be able to keep a higher RPM through a heavier cut. Ultimately I'm exceedingly happy with the quality, fit, finish, and function of the Elephas. Every bit worth the price (especially when it cost so much less than the Shelix). Now that they are nearly the same price I'm still satisfied with the Elephas - it seems they squeezed more efficiency out of the helical design and were able to provide comparable cutting coverage with 4 less carbide knives overall. The wrenches, spare screws, and 5 spare carbide knives are a nod of quality that I am glad they took. Overall I think the increased mass of the cutter head was a choice I would have made myself - it suits the use case in the DW735 more than going with something lighter. ... show more
