  • A durable, high-quality, well designed tool at a reasonable price
Style: 2-Speed 13" w/Feed Tables & Extra Bl...
I gave away my last one to a family member and bought myself a new one. It was probably about 8yrs old when I gave it to him, and still works great after thousands of board feet of planing. Replaced blades and kept it clean and oiled, and I've never had complaints. The 13 inch width is only a little bit bigger than most benchtop units, but enables actually planning a 12 inch board. The double rollers makes for a smooth feed, and the two-speed transmission is nice to control the cuts per inch. I've kept it on fine for almost everything though. The three blade cutter head is a big plus here: my experience has been smoother planing. The depth of cut gauge (how much material you are taking off with this pass) is nice, but you really cant see how deep your cut will be until it's already too late (when the rollers catch the board). Recommend 1/16th inch cuts for best results. The height gauge (determines overall thickness of the board) is accurate, right out of the box. The hand wheel and height remain right where I put them, despite the machine's natural vibration. One unique feature is the depth stop on the left side. Once set accurately, you can get repeatable results for common thicknesses across batches. A couple pointers... dont buy this without the infeed/outfeed tables, as they are key to good cuts. Speaking of which, if you run into any planer snipe (a gouge in the cut on either end a couple inches from the end of the board), just look up the videos and adjust your tables. I have almost no snipe issues. Always run the board through twice: once to get the bulk, and a second time to ensure a smooth, even cut. Watch out for tearout by running the board through so the cut is with the grain. Clean the rollers every once in a while, as it will prevent slipping. If you are cutting wider boards, turn the feed speed down, as the motor will be under a heavier load. I recommend buying a set of carbide brazed cutters; the life and quality of cut will go up. If you can afford it, buy a true helical cutter head replacement, as this will dramatically improve the performance of planing hardwoods, figured woods, and end grain. Plus, it's very easy to turn a cutter if it gets chipped without going through the hassle of changing or flipping an entire cutter. Overall, I would buy this thing over and over again. Its precise enough and heavy duty enough for an active shop, but affordable for hobbyists. It's also a great width for most applications, and the next steps up (15" or 20") are between double and triple the cost. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Great product good price

This Dewalt planer produces a fine finish. It is easy to use, easy to adjust and setup, and the markings are easy to read. It is very heavy and well built.

  • Exceptional performance & reasonable price
Style: 2-Speed 13" w/Feed Tables & Extra Bl...
I build furniture and builtin cabinets. I use Cherry, Hard Maple, Walnut and other hardwoods. Almost all of my lumber comes from a saw mill so I use this planer both for roughing down, and for final thickness. I had a 12" Delta for about 20 years, and this DEWALT is superior in every way. Its not that the Delta performed poorly, Just that the DEWALT is much better. Here are the positives and limitations in my experience: 1. Three blade cutter is fast, and leaves a very smooth finish. Minimal sanding needed before finishing (220 & 320 grit with a clear finish) when using the slower feed rate. 2. Motor is 120V, but very powerful. Even in full width planing of hardwoods, it does not bog down. 3. Dust collection is very efficient when hooked up to my 4" shop DC. The planer has a builtin fan that blows chips out the chute even when not hooked up to DC. This prevents chips from getting crushed into the wood when it goes under the feed roller. There are none of the annoying little crushed chip marks that require extra work to get the wood surface ready to finish. (By the way, if you do not hook up a DC, and just let the chips blowout of the dust port, you'll have a trail of chips 10'-15' away from the planer! This little puppy BLOWS!) 4. I get no detectable snipe even when planing long boards, as long as I support the out-feed end. This model includes the extension in-feed and out-feed tables. I did not expect these to be enough to prevent snipe, but they work great. 5. Comes with an extra set of knives. 6. Machine weighs a little under 100 lbs. It can be moved fairly easily (even by an old fart who's not as strong as he once was) but still has enough mass to be stable when planing larger boards. 7. Thickness and depth of cut adjustments are easy and accurate. 8. Overall build quality is excellent. 9. Not cheap of course, but well worth the money if you are doing enough work. Limitations: 1. The machine is fairly noisy. IMHO good hearing protection is an absolute must. 2. There is an aftermarket spiral, individual carbide cutter head available (about $300 at Grizzly). I wish that was an option on this model when new, rather than as an aftermarket item. It would be a big advantage for those of us who have a higher workload for the machine. Overall, I am very satisfied with this machine. ... show more

  • Wonderful
Style: 2-Speed 13" w/Feed Tables & Extra Bl...
After looking at others, I found that this is considered the best planer in its class in the majority of reviews I read and watched on Youtube. Yep, they are right. It is easy to use and does a wonderful job. It is loud so use ear protection! Buy the DW735X. It comes with the in feed and out feed platforms. If adjusted properly and care is used in feeding the work, you get no snipe. I built a heavy wooden table from 2 x 4s and installed casters but that was probably overkill. Purchase the recommended table, if your budget allows. By all means, regardless of your skill level, READ the instructions before use. I highly recommend this planer. ... show more

  • Quality planer
Style: 2-Speed 13" w/Feed Tables & Extra Bl...
The planer is well packaged to protect the tool. The delivery person looks like they dropped it and left it on it's side in front of my gutter/leader which was annoying but the tool itself was in good condition. It's a very heavy tool but very simple to put together. The version I bought came with the extension tables and an extra set of blades. The blades were already installed in the machine so the only assembly you need to do is connect the extension tables (which is very easy) and add the dust port adapter. You can adjust the extension tables by turning bolts on the side of tables. It's a beast of a machine and very loud during operation but .. its part of owning a planer. I would recommend using some type of dust collection system because there i a lot of wood chips and saw dust that comes out while using it. This planer seems so well built and it looks great. I'm happy with this purchase. ... show more
