  • Exactly what I needed
Model: OR-6619US3-BK
Since I bought this a year and a half ago I've used it to transfer data from old to new hard drives pretty seamlessly without issue. I used it last yesterday to copy data before replacing a drive. As a bonus, the packaging it came with is really nice and I'm able to re-box the product after every use and store until I need it next time. ... show more

  • Works and the company is eager to please
Model: ORICO 6629US3-C-BK
I ordered this device but couldn't get it working with any of my drives, either on windows or Linux. Returned it but the company insisted that I try again. With the replacement I was able to get it working, so maybe the first was just a faulty first product. I can't remember perfectly but I *think* they may have revised the hardware since the first version because it looks just a hair different than I remember. Could by my imagination. Anyway, though they took a while to get to me (probably a Chinese holiday or something), once the company did make contact with me they were very eager to ensure that I was happy with my purchase and to help me in any way they could. I have had it working successfully not under both windows and Linux now. It can be a bit finicky. Like, it wouldn't work with my Linux computer at all until I had used it once on my windows computer and it had installed the driver on my windows computer. If I have one drive in there and then add a second one, sometimes both will disconnect from my computer and not reconnect. Other times it will reconnect. It works with both windows formatted drives and those formatted for Linux (have tried XFS and EXT4) and with drives with multiple partitions. That's good. I have also had two drives connected at a time and have formatted drives through it as well. Somehow it failed to work a lot when I first started using it, but lately I haven't had any problems. I guess it just has to get into the groove of things? There's a switch on the back to go from "PC" mode to "Cloning" mode. Cloning works in disk-at-a-time mode, not file mode. So the two hard drives need to be pretty similar. To see how robust the clone mode is, I put a 2TB western digital green disk formatted to XFS in the source and a 2TB Seagate barracuda in the target, formatted to two partitions (ext4 and fat, I think). It beeps, I guess to let you know it's good to go. Then I pressed "start" on the back. Beeps again and the little lights in the front blink back and forth. I thought maybe it wasn't working so I stopped it and checked out the drive. It had formatted the target to XFS and started copying. Works well. I currently have it copying, though it says it will take like 16 hours to duplicate A 2TB drive. I guess it copies bit by bit. Probably a lot faster to just format the second drive and copy the files over. Actually, for sure that would be faster. Still, the cloning seems pretty robust. Not that I will ever use it again or anything. This will only work with up to 4TB drives according to the manual, though it says 6TB in the description. All my bare drives are 4TB or smaller so I can't test whether a 5 or 6 TB drive would work. I don't see why there need to be limitations like that. We already have 8TB drives available...why limit the hardware like that? I bought this because I have a ton of bare drives from past computer (specifically, I keep upgrading my file server to larger drives and then I have multiple smaller but still quite large drives around). I have little SATA-USB converter cables but they are a very inconvenient form factor. This, on the other hand, is very convenient. You just pop the drive in the top and turn it on. I really like that. I also like that you can do two disks at once. Mainly because it speeds up my backup procedures a lot to back up to more than one drive at a time. Now that I've worked with it a bit and seen that it can perform, I'm willing to upgrade it from 1 star to 4. ... show more

  • Super Cloning without a PC.
Model: ORICO 6629US3-C-BK
Excellent addition to your technical toolbox. A time saver, very economical, a no-brainer, and well worth every penny, at $35. No PC or software required, just place source and target drives in the marked slots, turn the unit on and press START. A hardware, sector by sector clone is made of the source drive. Four blinking purple lights, on the top, let you see the percent of completion. At finish, the device beeps and all lights turn blue and stay lit. Easy! The power on button, selection switch, start button, USB 3 port, and power port are on the back of the unit. There's a switch for selecting Clone or PC, in case you may want to use the USB 3.0 cable included. I probably won't, but it's a nice advantage. The 110v power adapter outputs 12v / 4000ma to the unit. 12v means a possible use with an off-grid battery unit or from a vehicle, if you needed that route of power. Without tying up one of my PCs, I can clone all day long, like set and forget it. Larger drives take longer to clone. 500gb drive took over an hour to finish. I've cloned 5 different size drives, from 160GB to 1TB, XP, Win 7 and Win 8 drives and they all are perfect. Sorry, no Linux just yet. A bonus if you ever cloned and attempted to start up your new drive only to find that boot sector/partition didn't format over correctly, like with Ghost or some other software cloning packages. Note, you must have the same size target drive or larger. And yes, if you put in a larger drive than the source drive, it will only clone the smaller source partition size to the larger target drive. You will need to increase the partition with some software method to get the full size of the drive. This is easily done if you Google the method online. Different brand drives? Yes, I have successfully cloned different target and source drive models/brands of the same size and larger. If the target drive is smaller, the clone will not proceed when the start button is pushed and the unit will beep. I also keep this plugged into a UPS battery backup incase of a power outage and I highly recommend others do the same. NO CONS YET: There are no cons to this device yet! I found it rated better and the specs higher than other devices at a higher cost. I will use it exclusively to see how long it lasts and that will be the ultimate test. Tested for 2 months so far and I would highly recommend it to others for cloning drives perfectly each time. A time saver for sure. ... show more
