I grow almost all of our veggies and herbs under LED lights in our full, 2-room basement garden year around. Some of the plants I grow get very large and often live and produce for more than 5 years. Since they spend most of their lives in a pot, I often research nutrients that help them to stay healthy and thriving for a number of years. The plants I grow include 4 varieties of kale, Swiss chard, collards, tomatoes (large and cherry), and peppers (bell and other) in addition to wide variety of herbs including basil, marjoram, oregano, thyme, cilantro, and more. I found out about the benefits of organic sea kelp, and found that it was not a complete fertilizer, but did add a number of nutrients to the soil and enhanced the ability of plants to use the available nutrient in the soils. I first ordered the 4 oz. size to try it, and then ordered the 8 oz. size which is 2 4 oz. bags when I saw improved growth and production in my plants. Although the 4 oz. bag looks very small, it goes a long way since only 1/4 tsp. is needed per gallon of water and should be used only once ever 2 weeks. Withe the many plants that I have, I have not yet used up the 1st 4 oz. bag I bought. Since this sea kelp is organic and harvested in the U.S, I believe it is a high quality product. In addition there is no odor as there is with other organic fertilizer additives. Some of the benefits that I found in using this sea kelp in addition to fertilizer appropriate to plant type are: 1) Enhanced Nutrient Availability - Kelp fertilizer contains essential nutrients and trace minerals readily available to plants. This makes it easier for plants to absorb nutrients without the risk of nutrient burnout, which can sometimes happen with synthetic fertilizers. 2) Promotes Root Growth - One of the standout benefits of kelp fertilizer is its ability to stimulate root growth. Kelp contains natural growth hormones, such as auxins and cytokinins, which encourage plants to develop a more extensive root system. 3) Enhances Soil Structure and Water Retention - In addition to providing nutrients, kelp contributes to better soil structure by adding organic matter. 4) Boosts Plant Immunity - Kelp fertilizer is known to improve plant immunity by stimulating the production of secondary metabolites, which help plants defend against pests and diseases. 5) Encourages Stronger Flowering and Fruiting - The potassium in kelp fertilizer is particularly beneficial for promoting flowering and fruiting in plants. Even with all of the benefits listed on internet research, the "proof is in the pudding" as they say. Does sea kelp really provide the benefits suggested in research? As a lifelong gardener, I'm surprised at how quickly the kelp mixture works on my plants. I've used fish emulsion in the past and, many years ago, used a kelp-included fertilizer but this is my first time for kelp powder. Mixing just a quarter to half teaspoon per gallon of water creates a rich, dark'ish water for my plants, and I've used it for both a root drench and a foliar spray. Each has proven effective to help my parched, summer-fatigued plants perk up. I even transplanted a young avocado tree that had rooted in my compost pile, using the kelp mixture to wet the soil mix before root-drenching it and WOW, the wilted leaves that were flat against the tiny trunk perked up within about 2 hours - very unusual for an avocado to respond that fast. I expect the new leaves to come in dark green and will update if that happens. It does smell like the sea, so just be prepared for that. GREAT value for the money (though I was kinda surprised at how small the package size was - it's supposed to make up to 50 gallons so I'm happy about that!) VERY simple instruction, pretty easy to read for my old eyes, and I even like the package design - old school with a contemporary twist. It has provided some great nutrients for all my plants, even my miniature roses loved the drench and I thought they may have lived out their lives at nearly 10 years old. They're coming back like new again.

Like the other Smartgrower products I have, this is a fantastic fert! Very easy to use, with quick results. Does not have any type of “unpleasant” odor, like many fertilizers can, especially when involving kelp or fish. My plants love this stuff & I will definitely order again, once my current bag runs out. Great value for the money, as it can make 50 gallons! Easy to read directions on the packaging as well, which is always appreciated by someone like me who has poor vision 🥹 Plant health = improved. My bank account = happy, from not needing to buy several products for the same results. You will not be disappointed! My philodendron has outgrown her moss pole, since I’ve started using this!

I was using Miracle Grow and just wasn’t getting the results I wanted so I ordered this and it’s a total game changer! I have about 30 houseplants and keeping them healthy is a big priority for me. This fertilizer has made a huge difference in my plants health and appearance. They are super green and healthy looking and the new growth started almost immediately. The product doesn’t really have a smell but it’s a little dark in color so it could stain fabrics if it gets directly on them. It only takes a small amount mixed with water so it’s super easy to use and lasts a really long time. I’m so glad I made the switch! It’s definitely worth it!
