Description

While I was giving birth to Lucy, my husband, Alessandro, was lying in bed with my sister Isabel. And thus, Inés Camargo—the youngest daughter of an Italian nobleman and a Colombian poet—begins to speak in a bitter, sweet voice.Against the backdrop of early twentieth-century Colombia, where the Catholic Church exercises total control over women, Orange Wine weaves an unforgettable story of sisterhood, love, passion, and betrayal. Isolated in a society that opposes her desires, Inés struggles with her identity as a mother, artist, sister, lover, and woman. Her choices are stark: accept her duty to her family or embark on a sensuous journey of self-discovery. Each path will cost her—or those she loves—something dear.Mirroring the alchemical process of turning oranges into wine, Inés must create a new life from a bitter pith, pressing sweetness from life’s agonies as she struggles toward artistic freedom and feminine awakening. • A Journey of Self Discovery
Format: Paperback
I soared through this book and enjoyed it thoroughly. It captures the life of Ines, an artist living in Colombia at the beginning of the twentieth century. As a mother, a wife, a painter and a lover she struggles to define her own identity and in the end, in spite all odds, she makes a discovery.

  • Orange Wine
Format: Paperback
This is a story about a woman who goes through a life changing traumatic event that forces her to reconnect with her roots. Sounds good right? There are a lot of things about this books that I loved right off the bat and that made me think that this was going to be a five star read. The author is a brilliant writer. The prose and sentence structure had me pulling out my highlighter and believing that I was going to come away from this read profoundly changed. I also loved that the setting and the vibes of the story were so tranquil and just really special. Taking place in Columbia with Italian roots was really fun to witness. What I didn’t like was how unrelatable it was. It was like a Disney fairytale, everything that the protagonist could have wanted was just magically there with no real struggle or detriment. She was well off and beautiful. She had a big family who continued to be in her life despite how insufferable she was. Everyone just magically fell in love with her. She got everything she ever wanted. Even when she suffered a loss - it was a minor plot point and did nothing to give her character depth. Overall, it was well written but just lacking in any feeling and depth to be truly great. I hope this author continues to write and grow. ... show more

  • Could not put this down!
Format: Paperback
I’m so grateful to have read *Orange Wine* as an ARC—this is a book that lingered with me long after I finished it. From its devastating opening line, I knew I was in the hands of a fearless storyteller. Inés’s voice is bitter and tender at once, intimate and unflinching, and I was immediately drawn into her interior world. Her pain, rage, longing, and quiet resilience feel achingly real, especially as she navigates betrayal within her own family while trying to claim space for herself in a society determined to deny her autonomy. The historical setting of early twentieth-century Colombia is richly rendered, particularly the suffocating power of the Catholic Church over women’s bodies and choices. What struck me most was how deeply personal the story feels even as it explores larger themes of patriarchy, motherhood, artistry, and desire. Inés’s struggle to reconcile who she is expected to be with who she truly is—as a woman, a mother, a sister, and an artist—felt raw and universal. The relationships between the women in this novel are especially powerful, full of love, jealousy, intimacy, and hurt, and they carry so much emotional weight. The metaphor of orange wine is beautifully sustained throughout the book. Watching Inés attempt to alchemize betrayal, grief, and repression into something meaningful and self-authored was heartbreaking and inspiring in equal measure. This is a quiet, sensual, and emotionally intense novel that asks difficult questions and doesn’t offer easy answers. *Orange Wine* is a stunning exploration of feminine awakening and artistic hunger, and I feel genuinely changed for having read it. ... show more

  • family drama
Format: Paperback
Oragne Wine is a story of heartbreak and betrayal, but also of survival. Once I started this journey with Ines, I could not turn back. Loved it. Thanks to the author Esperanza Hope Snyder, Bindery Books | Mareas, and NetGalley. I received a complimentary copy of this ebook. • Quiet but Beautiful
Format: Paperback
A beautifully rich story of a Columbia woman’s journey through social expectations, love, family, and choosing your own path. I loved the first half but felt the second half had pacing issues and unexplored character development “loose ends”. I found myself wanting more time and development with all of the sisters. The writing was quietly charming and lush without being bogged down in too much purple prose. I look forward to reading other works by this author in the future. ... show more

  • Lovely reading experience
Format: Kindle
After requesting Orange Wine on NetGalley, I began to second guess if this would be for me and put off reading it until the last minute. I was sure that I would break my streak for reading ARCs before their release date. Imagine my surprise when I got so engrossed that I finished it in 24 hours! Something about the story and the writing just flowed and kept me engaged. The mix of family drama interspersed with descriptive settings shouldn't have worked, but did. It all made sense once I got to the author bio and saw Snyder also wrote and translated poetry. I think what kept me from giving this the full 5⭐ was the difficulty in reading about women at the mercy of men, family, and religion for their reputation and position in society. I loved the references to Florence, as it brought back memories of walking the same streets and visiting the same sites. I wish I could have felt the same for the settings in Columbia and Spain, but I have not had the pleasure of visiting the cities mentioned. Just a lovely reading experience overall. Thank you to Bindery Books|Mareas and NetGalley for providing an eARC. ... show more
