Herald Enna didn't want to return to her home village, didn't want to see the people who would remember her from when she was a young girl, and especially didn't want to see Bard Jordie Ambersen again. • Lovely short story
Format: Kindle
This short story was one that shows you the different dimensions of love. How it can be something that drown you even as a good thing and how it can save you when you are aren’t expecting it to do that. Herald Enna and Bard Jordie have a history and this is their story. What a sweet story.

  • Good read
Format: Kindle
has all the elements of a good short story. Character is believable and well developed despite brevity, conclusion is satisfying. Only negative is the distracting typesetting errors. Looks like it was brought from another format into e-book without checking for errors.

  • Disappointingly short for the price
Format: Kindle
Classic Valdemar but very short for the price! Mercedes Lackey has the formula down to a fine art but always manages to inject a little twist of difference and surprise. The Herald returns home reluctantly to assist in rehabilitating a group of orphans, only to find that the Bard who was her love has returned. There is a fire at the orphanage and Bard and Herald perform heroic feats to rescue the children. Both are badly burned, but the Bard dies ... only to revisit the Herald in the shadow lands as she lies desperately fighting for life to free her from the guilt and sadness she felt at losing him. ... show more

Format: Kindle
.I would like to know who started the fire, how many of the children had gifts. the story really got me hooked . but all of the books Mercedes laCkey has written do the same thing to me. It is a great read.

  • Excellently crafted if rather sad short
Format: Kindle
I don't get the goofy plaints that this is short. It's sold as a short story and is an outstanding one. If you like shorts this is excellently crafted with a good situation and characters--you don't have the time for character development in any depth writing a short. Nicely done if sad ending. Certainly room for a follow on. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Short but worth it.
Format: Kindle
Yes, as the other reviewers said, it's short but no more so than most of the short stories in the Valdemar anthologies. It stands true to the feel of the others too and does leave you wanting to know more about the characters but isn't that the mark of a good author? Definitely worth the (very low) price and a worthwhile addition to any Valdemar fans collection. ... show more

  • To save the children
Format: Kindle
This story of Valdemar was a bit of a tear jerker for me. I forget sometimes how powerful writing can affect a person. Mercedes Lackey does, like all good writers, play the emotions of her readers like the greatest harpist.
