This well-written memoir flows effortlessly through his life blending themes of determination, ethics, compassion, and even a bit of humor. Early childhood experiences, including seeing his parents struggle with their own challenges and his prolonged hospitalization as a teenager, would ultimately create the respect and compassion that he showed to his patients. With each chapter, as one barrier after another is thrown his way, he grows ever more determined to build his career and start his family. And later, as a hospital executive, he shows others the necessity and value of doing not what is easy, but doing what is right. This story is about so much more than a career in healthcare.
