It takes only one tragic time to learn you can’t add water to melted chocolate, or the whole batch will seize up into a big clumpy mess. Even just a drop of conventional food coloring will do it. Thus this Oil-Based Set of Food Coloring is the answer for anyone wanting to color chocolate, namely white chocolate to achieve custom shades. Right off the bat, I was impressed with the variety of colors. 26 is more than enough to get just about any shade you need. There’s a large number of green shades (Green, Grass, Matcha, Forest, Cyan, and Jade), and several reds and pinks (Red, Wine, Rose, Brick, Pink, Fuschia), plus Gold and Black. I melted four squares of white baker’s chocolate to test it out, and decided to add the Matcha color. One thing I noticed right off the bat is that this oil-based food coloring comes out much more slowly than water-based. In fact, at first I thought the bottles might even be sealed at the tip, so I used a pin. Turns out there was no sealed tip; the oil is just thick. It takes a little trial and error to get the hang of squeezing out the right amount. The first time I got one drop to come out; the second time I think three or four shot out. That’s something to watch, since each bottle only contains 6 ml, not a huge amount. As the directions say, a little goes a long way. But once I mixed the coloring in the bowl of chocolate, I was very impressed. It blended in beautifully. Sure enough, it made a lovely shade of green, just like matcha powder. It did not change the taste. And the chocolate stayed smooth as silk. Success! I’m looking forward to using this set for holiday baking – not just for chocolate but also for buttercreams, other candies and frostings - maybe even crafts like candles and bath bombs. Works like a typical oil based coloring so best in heavy oil bases vs water. The colors are vibrant and in an impressive range of colors! Most of what I want in colors are covered here, so no need to mix, so there's more consistency.

So like any colorant the more you add the deeper the tone, I was too impatient with the dropper lid and just poured some into my large white chocolate melt. Lots of variety here in tones, and a great sampler to figure your favorite pallet.

Used these to color some icing. It took several dozen of drop in about 1/2 cup of icing to really become the vivid red and green color I was looking for. The results were great though and there was no decernable flavor.

This is a good set of food coloring that comes in a variety of 26 bottles of different colors. Although the bottles are small, you only need a little of those drops to get the color that you need on your baking. I like to use food coloring to make fun food for the kids sometimes. But I also use it a lot on crafts. I love the variety of colors! I made some fun devil eggs and couldn’t decide between the different shades of green since it has a few. I did have to use more than I use from the gel kind of food coloring. But it can give you a really nice, deep color with only a few drops. I’m super excited to make some play dough and also bath bobs next. Really nice set. ... show more

I'm not a baker. I don't make heavy use of food coloring, but kids are picky and one way I've found to get them to eat stuff is to make it a weird color. I grabbed this set so I could make some fun food items for them. The latest idea that popped into my head were rainbow bagels. I used a few teaspoons of cream cheese, each mixed with a different color to make rainbow bagels and I was super happy with the result. The colors are vibrant and there was no taste I that I noticed. Just be aware that these are oil based, NOT water based. This will impact how effective the colors are depending on what ingredients you are using.
