  • Works well, but taking some time to actually learn it within FL Studio.
Style: 37 Keys
I've been using synths and midi since the late 80s and this is my first time purchasing a midi controller keyboard that wasn't designed as a stand-alone synth with built-in sounds. So I have some experience, but I'm not a professional. If you're just someone who likes to tinker around with music creation just for fun and entertaining yourself, then that is where I'm coming from. So I use PC, not a Mac. And I connected it through the USB port and opened FL Studio and it did open up and I could play with it, but I couldn't use all the buttons and found out you need to update to a certain version. (Also getting the free 6 month FLS trial thing took a bit of time to get also, so just be prepared if you don't already own it.) I updated and still had trouble getting the settings right in FLS. I tried, but I wasn't seeing the options that the instructions said that I should see. I called Novation tech support, they connected to my PC and did their thing which it turned out it wasn't as easy as the instructions made it seem. But all is working now. It will take some getting used to, since I can't intuitively maneuver thru the buttons to do what I think they will do, so I'll have to read the instructions. I've tried watching videos but they aren't very helpful for what I need. Most people I've watched seem to think it is just intuitive, and maybe it is for others, but not for me. So I'll have to update my review after I've gotten the hang of it. I can still create music, but I'm mostly using the computer and mouse and computer keyboard to move around the FLS daw. Which isn't a problem, however I thought it would be nice to be able to use the buttons on the midi controller. The controls feel very nice and durable. The keys are your standard synth key feel, very light and plastic feeling, but this was the FLKey37 version so at least they are full sized keys. I do prefer weighted or partially weighted keys, but this is fine. The pads also feel really nice, as well as the knobs. The overall keyboard is fairly light and would be easy to travel with, like in a car. But not small enough to take on a plane carry on. Wouldn't trust packing in a suitcase as it would likely break. I do like the feel of it, and it's integration with FLS is one of the reasons I bought this one. I just hope I can get used to the buttons and how to use it closer to it's full potential. I've only scratched the surface so far. But I recommend so far. ... show more

  • Decent choice for an FL Studio user
Style: 37 Keys
I really like the redo undo feature; it really speeds up the flow of recording. However I've experienced several BSOD(blue screen of death) crashes since connecting the device to my computer. The issue still has yet to be resolved and as a result I've since gone back to my old midi controller to avoid further crashes. (Update) I've been switching between midi controllers and troubleshooting the cause of the crashes and concluded that it has something to do with the drivers for this device and fl studio itself. If I end the process tree for FL from the task manager rather than exiting like normal after saving, my computer doesn't crash when I run other applications afterward. This seems to be an isolated issue too, because no one on the support forums for Image-line are talking about this. I built my pc myself, so I'm willing to consider the possibility that my hardware configuration may be a part of the issue. Overall, I do not regret my purchase the device functions as intended and I still enjoy using it. I'll have to reach out to Novation to see if they know anything about the crashes I've experienced. ... show more

  • Home run hitting midi controller
Style: 25 Mini Keys
This is, by far, the best controller I’ve ever bought for the money, and I’ve had a couple. Yeah, the keys are small (I got the mini), and it’s only 25 keys, but seriously, this thing has completely revamped my workflow while using fl studio. The pads are the first pads that live up to their potential I’ve ever used. By that I mean, you can slice using slicex in instrument mode (or play the keys this way, or any instrument/vst), there’s the ability to play the channel rack like a drum instrument, there’s note repeat, there’s sequencer mode, which is particularly useful in adding the hihats without cloning the channel rack instance of slicex, and there’s just a bunch of ways this thing really adds new dimensions to the space time continuum, and saves me time while making beats. Scale memorization may not be a thing of the past with this controller, but it can keep in a scale of choice automatically if that’s something you want. The turning encoder things (not sure what they are technically called) literally do much like the pads, and eat every other controller’s encoders for breakfast, by far, at time of review. Setup was satisfying, although I will say I had to manually enter the info in midi settings from the video they showed, which was a pain (thank you YouTube video history). Finally, I’d like to add that it’s not so much any one feature of the keyboard that stands out to me, it’s the sum of the parts that truly shine. It’s already (in two days) allowed me to save literally hours programming drums, and it sounds better than if I had. If you’ve ever thought, like I have, why don’t midi controllers do more than let you play piano, this is for you, period. ... show more

  • Exactly as advertised
Style: 25 Mini Keys
I bought this for my 16-year-old son. He earned it by getting straight A's on his report card! He loves it! He told me that it enables him to compose certain music that he never could have done without it. He especially loved the native compatibility with FL Studio and that he didn't have to install special drivers, plugins etc. He said that setup was easy, but he needed to watch the provided tutorials in order to use it properly. It was also eye opening to realize the limitations of a 25 key interface. My only regret is that I can't keep buying him one of these every time he gets straight A's. ... show more

  • Mostly great
Style: 37 Keys
Keys feel fantastic, integration with FL Studio really is seamless, and it looks cool! My only gripe is that the pads are not as bouncy/sensitive as Akai pads, I have an LPD8 that I was hoping this would replace but the FLKey pads are not quite sensitive enough to do fast rolls. But, that's really the only (small) issue, it will really only be a bummer for finger-drumming specialists. Final decision: I'm keeping both! :) ... show more
