  • Well thought-out controller and AMAZING customer service
Style: 49 Key Pattern Name: Controller
I have owned this controller for nearly 2 years now and absolutely love its very well thought-out integration with Ableton live. The RGB lighting is a pleasure to look at, the pads respond very well for velocity-sensitive finger drumming and the keys, even though semi-weighted, feel very natural to play. I never realized how much time I spent away from the guitar/keys and messing with the computer clicking things and breaking my musical concentration. This thing _really_ makes a difference with its Ableton integration for being able to stay the heck away from the keyboard and mouse. The reason that I am writing this review, however, isn't to praise the controller - it has enough of that already. The reason I am writing this review is to commend the absolutely AWESOME customer service at Novation. Through a series of unfortunate circumstances I have had a few of these in my hands now and only one of them was due to an actual malfunction. When one of the sliders wouldn't hold a zero (after about a year's use) midi value at the very bottom of its travel, Novation set up a remote meeting with a tech where he installed a midi monitoring application and worked with me remotely to confirm the hardware fault. The unit was replaced with a refurb in great condition. About a year later the unit I had sustained some physical damage and I reached out to seek repairs. After a conversation with customer service - and I need to add here that they were very responsive, no more than a day turn between correspondence - they once again advised me of the options and I chose to go the refurb way. When the 2nd refurb arrived, it was in significantly poorer condition than my first one. I reached out to Novation again, this time not expecting much, since I needed a replacement through no fault of theirs and thought it would be completely fair to tell me to just deal with a well-loved unit. After sending some pictures and video detailing my concerns with the condition, the customer service representative worked with me to get a brand new unit (for a price obviously, but the refurb price). I have been, throughout, very impressed with Novation's customer support - responsive, knowledgeable and actual real people you can talk to about your gear. They really stand behind their product. That's something I really respect and is sadly not as frequent these days as one might wish. If you are looking for a feature-rich, affordable (as far as music gear can be) and enjoyable MIDI controller (with very intuitive Ableton integration) this should already be on your radar. If you expect or at least hope for great customer service, where a real and competent human being is on the other end of the communication - Novation is a great choice. ... show more

  • Plug and play after a simple setup script with Logic Pro, but requires DC power
Style: 49 Key Pattern Name: Controller
Lots of features at a great price. I can't complain. The only reason it's not fully plug and play is cause you need to run a setup script for certain DAWs, but if you're using Ableton, it's literally plug and play. My only complaint is that it needs a power adapter and for that, I knock off a star. Come on, Novation. You could've made it USB-C if it needed that much power and spared me my precious power strip space with your giant brick of a plug. ... show more

  • Great overall keyboard with tons of features. With that said...
Style: 61 Key Pattern Name: Controller
I did not own the keyboard for very long, and ultimately had to return it, due to keys randomly not registering in FL Studio. I'm not sure if this is a problem with FL Studio, my USB cable, or the keyboard itself, but when playing the keyboard with any sort of speed, there would be random keys that would not give any input within FL Studio. I thought this might be a problem with the velocity, but checking the velocity within FL Studio's grand piano plugin, I was able to verify there was no input from the key. It also wasn't any specific key. It was completely random which key wouldn't register. Very strange. One other issue I had was with quality control. When I first opened the box and started playing the keys, I noticed a very strange ticking noise coming from one of the keys. After some investigating, I noticed that there was a very small piece of plastic sticking out from the key to the left, which was coming into contact with the key to it's left, making a ticking noise when pressed. I managed to fix this relatively minor issue by removing the piece of plastic that was sticking out. To be clear, this small piece of plastic was actually part of the key itself. It looks as if during the injection molding process, someone didn't remove the sprues properly. Novation take note! (no pun intended) Another issue I have with this keyboard is the feel of the keys. The keys are semi-weighted, and they actually feel quite good - if you don't press down too hard and fast. If you press the keys down hard and fast, you will notice that the keys start to "pivot", and the end of the key (in the back) will hit the top of the inside of the case, causing a very noticeable "clack" noise. I'm not sure if this is intended, but it doesn't feel right at all. This keyboard does have aftertouch, but I've owned other keyboards with aftertouch, and they don't require the keys to be pressed down so hard they "pivot" and come into contact with the back of the case itself. It's a very strange feeling. If you don't press the keys too hard or fast, this doesn't happen, but you'll have to do some velocity curve editing within FL Studio to eliminate the need to press that hard in order to get full velocity without the clacking noise from the keys. To be clear, every key does this. Just press down the the very tip of the key, and keep pressing down until the key "pivots" and starts to raise up in the back, hitting the case. I suppose opening the case and adding some foam back there would solve this problem, but I'm not sure that it's actually a problem. Is this intended behavior? If so, what is the "pivot" action for? Is it part of the aftertouch? If so, I will add a start to this review. As far as features go, I would say that this keyboard works very well with Ableton Live. It was designed with this software in mind, so that makes sense. It's packed full of options, and the on screen menus are easy to navigate. I did not spend much time with the keyboard, so I cannot give a full review. Just be aware of the above issues that I ran into. Perhaps you will have better luck with FL Studio, but I could not fix the random key problem I mentioned above. I'm giving this 3 stars for now. I would still recommend this keyboard if you're into Ableton Live, but watch out for the above key issues. ... show more

  • Fantastic for (at least) Ableton Live
Style: 49 Key Pattern Name: Controller
I've had this for about two weeks. I am still in learning mode for Live, but have used DAWs in the past (primarily Cakewalk Sonar). The integration with Live is just amazing to me. I still don't understand some things about the SL, and I haven't touched the sequencer (since I use Live for that), but the five colour LCD screens are very well done in terms of controlling soft synth/efx parameters. The only thing I wish was a little different is that the transport controls are waaay over there on the right (I'm left handed). It's a bit spendy for a controller but for my needs it's totally worth the price. Novation has knocked it out of the park with this. (It's my first Novation product purchase...) ... show more

  • Great hardware controller!
Style: 49 Key Pattern Name: Controller
This thing does what it says it does and it does it very well! Still exploring it in my studio setup, but have been very impressed with it.

  • Very Nice
Style: 49 Key Pattern Name: Controller
Overall it does what it says and is really nice. BUT some of my keys make a pop sound when I press and then release. Pressed really hard on it out of frustration and it popped very loud and then hasn't popped since. I don't know what that was about but as far as functionality goes it was unaffected and continues to perform properly. ... show more
