This is pretty much the industry standard for getting a line up into a tree when it's too far to hand-throw it. I tried the compressed air type (takes too long to reset when you miss. ) The Big Shot resets very easily for do-overs. Sturdy, great construction except the pouch. The stitching ripped out on its first day of use after just a few shots. (See picture #1). Not a huge deal to repair with a speedy-stitcher, but come on Notch people, you can do better. They sell a release trigger for it. Don't buy it. I did and threw it away (too lazy to return it). It's hard to mount on the shaft (I had to use a clamp to compress it enough to get it latched) and you can't move it around for varying the tension for different distances. Get a panic snap (local farm/ranch store) and cam-buckle and some webbing. (See picture #2). You could also use an archery trigger-release, but the panic snap is less than 10 bucks and an archery trigger is about 30. With the webbing going through the cam-buckle, you have a 2:1 mechanical advantage for tensioning and you can set it to any tension you want based on how far you pull it down. The panic snap releases really clean. To anchor the webbing at the butt of the pole, I just drilled a hole in the plastic cap, put in a long eye-bolt and taped it into place.     • Turkey cannon
I used to think that this thing was overrated and just a marketing gimmick, I even though that after my first few tries. After I couldn't get more than 40 feet with it I angrily dug the instructions out of the trash and as soon as I opened them there was a nice picture of how to hold it correctly and incorrectly. Sure enough, I was doing it the way it explicitly stated not to. After getting it back out and holding it correctly, I deployed my entire 150' of throw line up the hill and across several trees. I am pleasantly surprised and with a little practice I am confident I could take out a Turkey with this thing if the conditions were right. I'm not sure how well a 16oz weight would take down a Turkey, but I'm sure it would at least knock the feathers off. ... show more

    • Outstanding throwline tool!
Outstanding throw-line tool. For tree-work, I recommend a 16-ounce lead bag, so it has a better chance of pushing through leaves and returning to ground level. Also recommend keeping your line in a 5-gallon bucket or on a tarp in a big figure-8. Suggest initially using 150+ feet of 1/8-inch polyethylene line, wearing a hardhat-goggles, keeping others away from the drop-zone, not taking your eyes off the moving bag and purchasing the optional Big Shot trigger system. If you use 3/4-inch rope, you will need to pull up a lighter-weight rope first. I probably have cut down over 5,000 trees in the last 45+ years and have seen many accidents. I now tie a line up in 80% of trees I cut near houses, if there is "any" chance of the notch breaking, a gusty wind or the tree doing something unexpected which could cause damage. We only used this roughly six times over the last three-months, but even just for the first two trees, it was well worth the investment, despite being slightly over-priced for the entire system. I am too old to be climbing up 60+ feet in trees anymore and this saved major time from screwing steps in the trees. One update after a year of use- I recommend the optional trigger system for improved accuracy, allowing users to better control, both with the aim and distance the projectile will travel. Unfortunately, the split 4-foot long poles in this kit greatly limit trigger placement, so I suggest one solid 8-foot pole, to allow the trigger to be mounted where desired. Most tree service suppliers offer the solid 8-foot poles. I also recommend buying a spare pouch and band long before you suddenly need to replace it! Safety First- wear your hard hat! ... show more

    • Amateur that has learned a lot.
I love this thing. I’m an amateur. What I’ve learned: Get a throw line with weighted bag. Absolutely purchase the Big Shot Throw. I didn’t buy the trigger. After a couple shots, I can now shoot my line up 40-50 feet accurately. I’ve learned that you don’t have to tie your rope on the line where it lands. Pull the line up through the branches and then drop it down closer to the tree. Also I was trying to pull my 3/4” braided rope up with a large loop tied on the end getting caught in the V’s of the tree. The throw line I purchased here is excellent and has a waxy feel that grips well. I unknotted my rope and now tie the line directly to the end of the rope. I wrapped it a couple times and then knotted. It pulls up through the tree without getting caught. You professional tree cutters probably think this is silly because it’s common knowledge. But not for me. Hope this helps someone else. ... show more

A friend of mine is a tree guy and I saw him use this to set some safety lines when he helped me remove an old Satellite dish from my roof. I realized this would work great to help hang my light up snow flakes for my Christmas display. Fired a lead line up high in the trees, attached the power cord to the line and then to the snowflake. Pulled up and now have the lights higher than I ever could before! ... show more

    • Works great. 8ft or so tall giant sling shot. Breaks into 3 pieces.
This thing is amazing. Bought a new house. Had a full height sweetgum with a bunch of dead branches at the top looming over our vehicles. Didn't want to pay to have it dropped. Top big for me to handle myself with confidence. Used this and a shot bag to get my big ropes up there. Then used my truck to yank them down. It worked great. As soon as it cools off more I'll drop the rest of the tree. It's short enough now I can manage it. Using this and a little bit of time kept some money in my pocket.     • Weight pouch is unraveling after a few times used
I have only used this a few times and it does work great, however the pouch that holds the throw weight is already coming off. I am disappointed in the quality, l have not contacted the seller as of yet but I am hopeful they will be willing to resolve the issue.
