  • A well-designed air cooler, but BEWARE of QC or returned products!
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I wish I could say equally good things about the quality control of this cooler as I do about its performance to noise ratio, installation, compatibility, looks, and long-term mounting kit upgrade prospects. Disappointing to say the least, especially for Noctua's premium prices. The box arrived accessory-complete with all bags sealed and everything looking new...until looking at the cooler itself. There were a few bent fins on the heatsink, thankfully they could be straightened out with a gentle application of pliers. The worst offense though was on the heatsink's most critical part: the base cold plate. While the plate was generally well-machined and mirror-like, it had a few scratches and scuff marks on it. I could definitely feel the scuffs, meaning there could be some additional performance left on the table due to how the difference in cold plate texture might affect contact with the CPU IHS, something that even a good thermal paste application won't make up for. Either this unit got past factory QC damaged, or was damaged in shipping (cold plate unlikely to be damaged in this way thanks to the plastic shield), or was resold new after being returned by a previous user. In any case, it's a shame especially for a first-time Noctua customer. I'll probably be returning this for another unit soon, hopefully one with a pristine cold plate. UPDATE 11 Dec 2022: Upping rating to 4 stars since in the end, my unit still performs well in the grand scheme despite of the scuff marks on the base cold plate. My i5 12600k CPU during 3 back to back runs of Cinebench R23 multi-core maxed out at 64C while in a Fractal Torrent case, case fans at 40% and cooler fans at 50%, granted at stock. Still, I have to wonder if any performance would've been gained from a pristine cold plate. All things said, I've decided to keep it as there were no problems with anything else. Just be EXTRA WARY of the condition you may receive this product in, give it a good inspection. ... show more

  • It’s pretty awesome!
At first I was going to do an AIO route for this second build and decided on the Noctua NH-U12A Chroma.Black for the simplicity and quiet operation to cool down my Ryzen 7 5800X. *1440p test review* Test 1: 5800X (PBO enabled) paired with Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition. Result: Not good to be honest… on idle it’s around 57C-65C and gaming on avg is around 82C. Fan noise is audible and annoying. Definitely a hotbox machine. However, it’ll get the job done until you get better cooler or an AIO. Test 2: 5800X (PBO enabled) paired with Noctua NH-U12A chroma.black edition. Result: It’s great! On idle it’s around 43C-50C and gaming on avg is around 72C. Fan noise is a quiet hum. Heat dissipation is pretty good so far. Not as much as a hotbox heater. It looks super clean and having RAM clearance is a plus! Overall: I think it’s a great option for those looking for a simplistic build, quiet operation, and a stealthy vibe approach. Thermals are great depending on your PC case, CPU of your choice, fan curve, CPU tuning, and case fan set up. Installation process is smooth and the manual guidance is easy to follow along. Great packaging/goodies from Noctua is 10/10. • Incredible (albeit pricey) Air Cooler For Enthusiasts
If you're considering this fan, then you probably already know of Noctua's stellar reputation. This is now the second CPU cooler of bought of theirs, and I've also bought several models of their case fans in the past, all to great success. As expected, this cooler performs the best I've ever personally seen *and* it does so at surprisingly low noise levels. It's sufficient to cool a monstrous Ryzen 7950X at full 170W TDP, but we decided to power-limit the chip to 105W (look into this if you're curious why we'd do that) and were getting sub-80 degree temps under heavy load such as Cinebench and Blender BMW. It's impressive that they were able to achieve D15 levels of cooling performance (if not even better) in a form factor that's small enough for full RAM clearance. I would highly recommend this cooler to anyone using mid to top-end CPUs. It's a bit pricey, but you get rock solid performance and can reuse the cooler long into the future as Noctua provides free mounting bracket adapter/upgrades as platform requirements change. ... show more

  • There is a reason it's a premium item.
Compared to other very respectable coolers I have used in the past, install of this one was very easy. It's also a plus that the metal fan mounts have a better design than similar style coolers and hold the fans on much more firmly. While I haven't fully tested the performance in the new PC, I can say the entire box is almost silent. Once it is booted, I have to strain in a quiet room to hear it at all (and that is with 3 stock case fans also running). It would be nice if the price were a bit lower (even the more powerful D15 is cheaper), but it's still below most AIO coolers at similar performance to many. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't see the value, especially with the temperatures new CPUs run at. ... show more

  • 12900k stock easy peasy
thisll handle 12900k at stock fine, tested with intel xtu at full load, doesnt thermal throttle. i also set max rpm at 60 percent so its pretty quiet as well. stays around 70 to 80c or less. same temps in both a p600s with minimal fans and a lianli 011d air mini with full fan setup. any minimal oc will cause it to thermal throttle. but ive used my 1290k under watercooling and there isnt much difference with oc vs stock, unless your racing your pc with benchmarks. gaming performance was barely any different being ocd with watercooling ... show more
