  • A lot cooler than your old cooler
Color: White Size: 45qt
This review is for the Ninja FrostVault 45qt Wheeled Cooler with 'Dry Zone' integrated dry-storage drawer. This cooler is indeed a 'premium' level cooler, on par with other premium brands you might recognize. It is a 'roto-molded' style cooler, but with added wheels and a heavy-duty towing handle. Make no mistake, these are HEAVY coolers when filled, so the wheels and handle are appreciated. And this is no rope handle or chintzy aluminum deal, but something two people could easily work together to pull. While this market is fairly saturated with brands such as Yeti, RTIC, Orca, and others, what sets the Ninja cooler apart is the "FrostVault Dry Zone" drawer, which allows you to easily keep food cool, dry and separate at food-safe temperatures (under 40° F). The drawer latches shut so it stays closed until you want to open it, and it's not some cheap piece of plastic, but a sturdy drawer. I'm not sure I'd put raw, uncovered meat in it like the pictures and video show, but one thing I hate is putting sandwiches, meat, fruit, or other food in your cooler only to pull them out and have them floating in a bag of water. Generally speaking, roto-molded coolers tend to hold ice for days. What puts one above another is subjective and often depends on outside conditions. There are a number of videos where people have tried to prove one is better than another, and I've seen different outcomes. But in general this type of cooler is more successful than cheaper versions. The cooler I have is the 'Birch' white, 45-quart capacity. It's pretty good size and takes up a lot of the back-end of our Ford Explorer, so keep size in mind. Honestly the 30qt probably would have been better for our day-outings. I'm not sure we could lift the 65qt version without hiring sherpas. The 45qt cooler says that it fits up to 68 cans (no ice) or 40 cans + ice. I'm not sure what the value is of a cooler with no ice, but I WILL say there is value in learning how to use a cooler like this. If you can 'pre-cool' it before putting your drinks and food into it, it will stay colder much longer. Search for it and you can get more info, but suffice to say you can put ice or cold packs into the cooler in advance of using it to bring the internal temperature down before putting in your items. I'd say that this 'comfortably' holds a case of beer and some waters, if that helps. A lot also depends on how much ice you use. I like to layer and rock salt my ice, so I don't get as much. The wheels on this cooler are sturdy and easy to use in most terrain, though any wheel is going to struggle in sand. Plus, you're likely to drag the drawer through the sand, so not sure I'd recommend this for the beach unless you value a good workout. The latching system of the lid is different. I'm not a huge fan of the rubber 'pull to latch' style hooks, but it will be interesting to see how well this latch holds up over time. The thing about rubber latches is they are easily replaceable. The description says this has a heavy-duty, extra-strong telescoping handle. On the 45qt I do not think it telescopes, but I'll have to check it out more closely. It is heavy duty, though, and easy to pull. Overall, this is a nice offering from Ninja, and I recommend it from a quality perspective. We do a lot of weekend trips for swim meets. In the winter, the 30qt would probably serve us better, and same for those short 3 hour meets in the summer. But in the summer, sitting by the pool at an all-day meet, the 45qt will hold everything we need. It really comes down to the drawer. If you want/need the drawer and the idea of keeping your food separate from drinks appeals to you, then this is a great option. But if you do NOT care about that and mostly only pack drinks, then this is sacrificing some of that valuable space for the drawer. ... show more

  • I love this cooler, perfect for day trips, fits under my truck's bed cover!
Color: Blue Size: 30qt
This is the cooler I've always needed and hadn't had access to up until now. We're a family of 4 that does frequent day trips to the beach and other spots in our state and we typically only need a day or so of cool drinks and food. Every bit of this cooler appears to have been built with quality and heft in mind. The handle is a thick and grippy plastic, thick heavy plastic all over for the lid and body, as well as the thickness of the plastic used for the bottom tray and latch. The wheels have ball bearings for smooth rolling across various terrain and you can feel just how smooth they roll. We took this out for a test run on our first beach test and it was super easy to load and unload, locking the bottom tray was an easy and solid task being that you have a large sliding latching lock that holds the tray in with a positive red indicator to let you know it's secure, rolling this across gravel, stone, asphalt, boardwalk, and even soft beach sand was all very easy in comparison to a variety of coolers I've used in the past. I had about 2 1/2 days work of ice and cool drinks after bringing this home and letting it sit outside in the sun and even then I still had a few chunks of ice floating around before draining it. My two observations that could've been improved on are the wheel size and clearance from the bottom for easier rolling on rougher stuff and in the soft beach sand and possibly using an upper seal that doesn't have a gap for even better cold retention. My favorite thing is that this cooler just happens to be the perfect size to fit right under my truck's folding bed cover so unlike many other taller coolers I can actually close my bed cover and secure all of our stuff during our drive or when stopping at different places along our journey. This is a HUGE benefit to having a shorter, wider cooler, but still having the ability to carry a substantial amount of food for a trip! I love it. ... show more

  • Quality at the cost of size and weight
Color: Blue Size: 65qt
This cooler holds its temperature very well. There's a lot to like about it, the locking lid is really nice the handle is the most robust I've ever seen on a cooler, the way the handles are designed to also allow for strapping it down is cool, the way that one end of the cooler is deeper than the rest because of the Frostvault means that draining it is easy. The selling point and highlight is really the Frostvault itself, and that's understandable. It's something new that I've never seen in a cooler before, and it legitimately is cool to be able to keep items separate from the ice and dry while still chilled. That being said, there's room for improvement with it. The Frostvault is pretty shallow and has some wasted space with a substantial divider in the middle of it (I'm not sure if that's there for rigidity, but I think it could be smaller). My biggest complaints with this cooler are the size to capacity and the weight. I have an igloo cooler that is 60 quarts and is almost half the size and probably a quarter of the weight of this cooler. This cooler has a 65-quart capacity, but it's so large in comparison with a standard 65-quart cooler that I have a hard time believing most people would want it over something the same size but with much more capacity. As for the weight, I'm not a small guy and I can deal with heavy things pretty easily, but even empty this cooler is around 40lbs add a bunch of drinks and ice and there's no way I'm lifting this thing out of my car by myself, the wheels and handle aren't really optional when full! I can lift my 60-quart Igloo when full by myself; it's a task, but it's doable. ... show more
