Features

  • Vibration Reduction: Achieves up to up to 5.0 stops1 of compensation. When used with the Z 9, Synchro VR combines the in-lens and in-camera VR image stabilization systems for maximum results with 5.5 stops of VR compensation.
  • Teleconverter Compatibility: The NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S is compatible with both the Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x and Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x which increases the super-telephoto reach to 1120mm and 1600mm respectively with outstanding resolution, no loss of focus points and no need for an additional accessory.
  • Convenient size and weight: At a mere 5.25 pounds and just over 15 inches, the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S is Nikons most mobile, comfortable-handling 800mm super-telephoto to date. The secret is Nikon's proven Phase Fresnel element, which allows the lens to be lighter and shorter with fewer elements while maintaining pristine image quality.
  • Ergonomic controls. Easily access every button and switch on the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S. Two customizable Fn buttons, a Memory Set button for setting focus position, control ring, manual focus ring and even a focus limit switch can be used without taking your eye off the viewfinder.
  • Smooth panning. The center of gravity of the lens is positioned closer to the camera for fluid and accurate panning while using on monopods or handheld shooting.

  • You get what you paid for (a lot!)
Amazing lens with amazing picture quality... and the price sure reflects that. Not sure what I can add here that hasn't been said a million times already on video reviews. Was able to take pictures of the annular and total solar eclipses in 2023 and 2024 respectively. See attached pictures. Image stabilization actually works fantastically well; have only used this hand held, with no issues. Even when taking pictures of the moon. Have to use higher ISO levels on low light conditions though. Pros: * Amazing image stabilization * Amazing picture quality * Not super heavy Cons: * Not very light either * at f/6.3, you'll be hard pressed to be able to take pictures at the reciprocal rule and ISO64; even under direct sun light, let alone at very high shutter speeds like 1/1000 s. * Not precisely cheap, even though it's cheaper than its F mount counterpart ... show more

  • An extraordinary lens
I'm an avid bird photographer and a long time Nikon DSLR shooter. I bought a Z9 and a FTZ II adapter in November 2023. I had been shooting with the 500mm f/5.6 PF lens, usually in DX mode, and was quite pleased with the results. After reading various reviews, I decided to get the Z 800mm. What a game changer! This lens is the real deal. It's crisp, responsive and the reach is amazing (even more so in DX mode). It has two L-Fn programmable buttons that are very useful. Note that the Z9 - 800mm combination is a little on the heavy side, so a monopod or a tripod for extended outings is a good idea. For shorter outings, it works perfectly well with a shoulder sling. ... show more

  • Excellent Quality and Reach. Fairly transportable. Fast enough.
Bird photographer. I've owned this lens for two years now. It's really just awesome. From about day one, I knew I wasn't going back. From reasonable distances is produces fantastic images on my Z9. From unreasonable distances it produces good to great images. Finally, from ridiculous distances which one shouldn't even attempt, it produces identifiable images. No, it's not as snappy as my 100-400, but good enough. I don't think I miss much due to speed. Most of those problems are behind the viewfinder. A 1.4x TC provides a little quality degradation, but usually the conditions shooting 200 yards out produce far worse degradation. This thing has the reach and quality to overlap with digiscoping a good bit. It's just light enough that one can reasonably carry around. I don't like super long hikes with it, but a mile here and there isn't bad. I carried it on my right hip for a long time, but that caused a little knee pain, so I use a front harness now. I look silly, but I feel fine. Definitely tripod worthy, but I shoot handheld a lot and it produces fantastic results. The stabilization is pretty awesome too. I try to follow the 800 mm > 1/800 s rule, but dropping to 640 is mostly fine. Even 1/500 is OK, but I start lowering my keeper rate about there. It's very easy to see what market space Nikon was attacking with this lens. It's expensive, but reachable. You can carry it around, but definitely tripod worthy. The only place it doesn't shine much is low light. But at 800, the best you get is f5.6 compared to f6.3 for twice or thrice the price. Modern Denoise software kind of makes up for it. That puts it at a great price point really. Beats its closest competitors in my mind. ... show more

  • Fabulous lens for wildlife photography at a still reasonable price.
If you photograph birds in flight buy this lens.

  • Epic lens with a few minor design issues.
Overall, it is one of the best telephoto lenses on the market for picture clarity that I have used (older Sony and Canon). Autofocus (on my Z8) works flawlessly. Focus is fast. Tracking on the 16X magnification works well. You can tell a significant amount of effort was put into the lens design. I would have preferred a faster F Stop for background Bokeh, but the low price and Z-Platform integration is too compelling. The picture appears sharper than the Nikkor 400mm 2.8 + 2X Teleconverter (and is lighter as well); although the light gathering of the 800 is poorer as well as the Bokeh, so choose wisely. Am I pleased with the purchase? Yes – absolutely. That said, there are 2 niggling issues that really bug me. #1 – The Lens foot is NOT Arca-Swiss compatible and must be replaced. #2 – The expensive objective lens does NOT come with a hard lens cap. Nikon provides a squishy sort of Lens Sock for your primary glass. So, expect to shell out a few hundred more – which seems ridiculous for a lens of this caliber. I purchased my Lens cap from Zemlin Photo. ... show more
