  • Amazing portability/performance for long prime telephoto for Nikon Z
With the Z9, used the 500mm PF w/ FTZ adapter and also various F-mount zooms, e.g., Tamron 150-600mm, mostly for nature/birds. Then switched to the Z 400mm f4.5. Love the Z 400mm f4.5; can't beat its amazingly (relatively) small size/weight, great for hiking/travel and good for lower light conditions. But for extra reach, it takes a hit in performance with the 1.4 and 2.0 TC teleconverters; even the 1.4 suffers from lower performance (slightly) in terms of autofocus speed and accuracy. Mostly I'm lugging the camera along on hikes. So portability is a big issue, and the Z 800mm f6.3 and the new Z 100-600mm zoom (or whatever it is) just seem too heavy. So, went with the Z 600mm f6.3 for 'more reach but still reasonably light.' Been using it (the Z 600mm f6.3) for a few weeks now. Functionally, works extremely well with the Z9 - seems like faster autofocus, better autofocus tracking, and better autofocus accuracy/'sharpness' than the Z 400mm f4.5 w/ or w/o a teleconverter. Really excellent image quality. In terms of size, heavier and longer than the Z 400mm f4.5, but about the same as 400mm + 1.4 TC. Still amazingly/relatively light and small for a 600mm prime lens. Yes, not quite as portable, but still easily carried and still great for handheld. Works well w/ the 1.4TC and 2.0TC. Under the right conditions, 1200mm effective focal length w/ the 2.0TC is pretty cool - great for, e.g., moon/sun & long-distance bird ID instead of a scope. The 'cons' are well documented. First, long minimum focus distance. It doesn't happen often, but it happens, e.g., a bird lands somewhere too close. But that can happen w/ any lens and I've never found a zoom to be too helpful in those situations (usually the bird is gone by the time you zoom out and re-focus). So, a drawback, but doesn't affect 95+% of my typical usage. Second, doesn't perform as well in low light. So I'd fully agree - you get the best images with this lens in fair-to-good lighting. Overall, considering the prices of things like the Z8 and Z9, in my opinion this lens is expensive but not 'crazy expensive,' and worth every penny in terms of balancing reasonably light weight and short length with amazing image quality at a long focal length, for bird and other nature photography and similar uses. ... show more

  • Great lens
Fantastic image quality. Photos are sharp, high contrast, and more color saturation than any other lens that I have used. All of those coatings and special glass does make a difference. Lens is compact and lightweight for the focal length. Limitation is f/6.3 widest aperture. Lens is a little pricey. ... show more

  • Amazing lens.
I am totally thrilled with this lens. I waited too long for the 180-600 and decided to take the plunge on the 600mm 6.3 S. Focusing is amazing along with image sharpness and the lightness and balance allow me to use it handheld despite issues I have with a tremor disorder. It ain't cheap but you get what you pay for. ... show more

  • Lightweight super telephoto
Wildlife photography. Easily handheld with outstanding sharpness. F6.3 is not desirable but with today's noise reduction software I can still get sharp photo's at relative high ISO's required in low light situations.

  • Light and easy to handle!
Nikon makes more expensive and better primes, BUT none of them have this price point or ease of use. Lens is amazing.
