This is my second DR-5 in 5 years. My first was damaged, so buying a second copy may indicate that I like this right angle finder - I do. First the good: If you do Macro work in the wild - in an environment you don't control and get tired of being on the ground then this may be an answer. Macro artist knows (http://www.truetoad.com/Gallery/Insects.aspx) what a pain it is being low for an extended period of time and then trying to get off the ground. Not to mention the heat and insects (ticks) that may want to hitch a ride. The DR-5 at least keeps you on your knees, thus you don't have to get on your belly to obtain a shot. I am able to get almost any shot and never have to get lower than knee level with a DR-5, The right angle finder rotates left and or right + has 2x magnification to ensure your focus is in. 1x and 2 x magnification. In 1x you can see your entire read-out, but when you switch to 2x you loose some of the metering readings - they are cut off. However, you get the benefit of knowing things are in sharp focus, plus it is easy to switch between 1x and 2x. The Bad: This is a screw on unit. meaning you must remove you current eyepiece to attach. "Please read your manual on how to remove your eyepiece"!!. Screwing this on means you must first remove your current eyepiece, so please take care and store your old one somewhere you will remember after using the DR-5 (lesson learned). It is not all that easy to take on and off, but once you know how - wash, rinse, repeat! If you are looking for on/off convenience - this may not be for you, but it is solid when it is on. Hard 90 degrees, no forgiving. If you use a flash with this it will be very close to the flash when positioned straight up, so you may find it uncomfortable to look down into the unit with your head so close to the flash, but you can always rotate it left or right. As mentioned the DR-5 rotates left or right has 2 x magnification and is useful in many shooting situations, but every shooting situation and may be awkward to use in some. I kept mine on for months and learn how best to use it in most situations. If you have a camera bag that fits your camera snugly, then having this sticking off the back of your camera may pose a problem in zipping up your bag, but that would only be for those more custom fitting bags for camera/lens combos. Be careful not to loose the rubber eye-cup because there is NO replacement!!! Shame on you NIKON! Recommended for Macro / Micro Photographers ... show more

  • Seems it may be just right - time will tell
This arrived in new packaging. Took a call to Nikon USA to decipher how to fit it to my D-6. Turns out it may not be the most utilitarian doing nature (bird) photography, as it exists. Out in the elements it may not be wisest to dismount the rubber protector on the lens view module, to then screw in the DR-5. I purchased a work-around. An "extra" DK-27. Once affixed to the DR-5, it is a simple slide to remove the original DK-27, place the DK-27 with the affixed DR-5 and walla, ready to pull your chin out of the sand, peer "down" into the DR-5 and fire away. I will follow up when I have an occasion to use it for ground level shots of shore birds along our coast. (Easy to use - three stars - due to the necessary workaround) ... show more

  • great quality but a bit hard to install
I like the idea of being able to photograph items that are very low to the ground without having to get on my belly to take the shot. This is ideal for that. It's good quality (Nikon of course) and the 1X / 2X feature helps to get in close. Also the diopter helps with those of us who wear glasses. Now for the bad. It's a bit difficult to install even with the instructions. I'm using mine on my D800E but I understand the same problem exists for the D700. To remove the existing eyepiece, you need to close the shutter on the eyepiece (the tiny switch just above the eyepiece). When you do that, the existing eyepiece comes right off - without doing it, you can forget it - I know. Also, it says to tread the new eyepiece in while holding down the lock buttons. Sorry, I have fat fingers. It's difficult (but not impossible) to do that. I'm still working on that part. ... show more

  • This is a real backsaver for low level and macro photography.
I use it mostly for macro photography. It is very handy and fits both the D500 and D800 cameras that I use

  • Seems really good so far
I have not yet used it on a live job but it seems to be way better then some off brand versions I have tried in the past. I did a quick look at it when it arrived and it seems like it will be rely helpful on some of the macro work I do.

  • Purchased - too complicated - sent back
Thought I'd need it, but, after fiddling for more than 20 minutes, I felt the $$ was not worth the benefits..again, quality product - it's NIKON, but, unless you really need it....pass IMHO
