  • This is the only superwide to buy for the Nikon dx DSLR
Color: Black
This lens is capable of generating super sharp images right to the edges. The distortion near the edges is not bad at all and completely correctable with software. The correction of optical aberrations is (OVERALL) more than adequate (world class really). The construction of the outer casing is plastic; probably a suitable variety that has durable properties for normal operation of this lens (if you want metal all over then pay 2-3 times more, and more than double the weight). Without reservations, during use, one should be careful to avoid impacts. Plastic is not necessarily dysfunctional (it's utilized in many high-performance and critical applications), and here it seems to provide the lightness and apparently noticable structural integrity that lends to a surprisingly solid feel in one's hands. The innerworkings that mount the lens elements are cased in metal. The glass is state-of-the-art (N-I-K-K-O-R). The electronics and focusing are 100% compatible with Nikon. If I want better I would buy the 14-24 Nikkor and mount it on a D600, D800 or D800E. Period. This lens is designed for conscientious photographers who (very) carefully study their scenes AND the lighting involved with the intention that their photos display exceptional quality with attention paid to details. This is not a snapshot lens per se (but, you could use this at a party, with the flash set to bounce and take a load of great snapshots). Note that this lens really shines at f/8 to f/11. The larger apertures still yield sharp images, but f/11 almost looks like medium format shot with film when enlarged to 8x10. This lens more than fills the bill for a superwide. It costs significantly more than the aftermarket lenses, but after all, by budgeting resouces to buy the Nikkor, one doesn't have to make excuses now, or five years from now when one buys another Nikon. It's impressive that something of this optical quality is offered at this price; but, clearly Nikon is 'on the ball' about using all of the modern advances in compound lens design and materials (ED and aspherical glass), coupled with extensive manufacturing experience. ... show more

  • Useful when it's useful! (With 2014 update) Useful when it's useful! (With 2014 update)
Color: Black
I use this wide angle lens first on a Nikon D90 and now on a D7100. I have lenses that cover the range from 10mm to 300mm in 3 steps: 10-24mm, 24-70mm, and 70-300mm. I also own the fairly new Nikon 85mm micro with VR. I am willing to change lenses as needed - no single solution for all day such as the 18-200mm for me. This background is leading up to the statement that I don't use this lens very much. However, when it is appropriate I find it terrific for the price. The angle of view at 10mm is a little more than 90 degrees diagonal; this means you can skrunch in a corner and see both walls with a little camera tilt or yaw. This capability is rather neat when shooting certain types of architecture and landscape scenes. When the angle of a wide lens such as this is proper for the job, several benefits are there because of the lens physics: 1) good depth of field even when hardly stopped down and 2) ability to shoot at relatively low shutter speeds even without VR. The second benefit follows partly because, other things being equal, short focal length lenses are lighter and smaller than longer focal length lenses. I uploaded (to Amazon) a picture made with this lens at Carlsbad Caverns that was shot at f4.2 and 0.4 seconds. Hand held! Of course I had to brace my body as best I could and was far enough from the subject that a flash would have been silly. I used this lens exclusively in the Caverns because I needed to shot low-light hand-held as well as liking the angle of view. I was not impressed until I got home and started looking at the pictures in Photo Shop. I had already announced that these were practice shots so I'd know what equipment (tripod, etc.) to bring next time. At least a third of the shots in these rotten conditions were useful and some were really great. I can't think of another lens in my bag that would work as well (not even the 24-70mm f2.8 because it's too heavy for this kind of long exposure work). I have owned the 10-24mm for 4+ years. As said above, I only use it once in a while. But it is always in my bag when I go on a shoot. If I need a wide field of view, I know this lens will do the job and I'm willing to take the time to switch. If I wasn't, I would not be using an SLR in the first place. ... show more

  • A must have camera lens
Color: Black
The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Zoom Lens is a fantastic wide-angle lens that excels in both performance and image quality, making it an ideal choice for landscape, architecture, and interior photography. After using this lens on my Nikon DSLR for a few weeks, I’m thoroughly impressed with its sharpness, versatility, and build quality. Whether you're a hobbyist or a serious photographer, this lens offers incredible value for the price. The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Zoom Lens is an outstanding choice for anyone who shoots with a DX-format Nikon DSLR. It offers sharp image quality, great build, and versatility that makes it perfect for a wide range of photography, especially landscapes, architecture, and interiors. The silent autofocus, image quality, and distortion control are impressive, and it offers great value for the price. While it’s not the fastest lens in terms of aperture and can be a bit large for some, the overall performance and image quality more than make up for these minor drawbacks. Whether you’re a hobbyist or a more advanced photographer, this lens is a great addition to your gear bag and a significant upgrade from the standard kit lens. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Nikon does it again!
Color: Black
This is an amazing lens! If you read my other reviews, you'll know that I am and have been a huge fan of Nikon for many years. If you can't decide on going with the DX or FX format DSLR, consider this: Nikon has several DX format lenses that aren't offered by any other brand or in any other format. Period. The 10-24mm is the widest lens made for DX that isn't a fisheye! I shoot scenics - mostly panoramas or vistas using the QTVR tripod head - and this lens will handle anything I can come up with. If you are shooting with an FX fromat Nikon, the lens will work on it, but keep in mind that your FX format camera will automatically crop to the smaller DX frame size. As is so often the case with Nikkor lenses, the glass is superb and the color rendition is identical to my other DX lenses. Yes, the lens is expensive and it requires 77mm filters. It's a perfect match for my 18-300mm DX zoom which also uses 77mm filters. The auto focus is both fast and quiet. It's max angle of coverage at the 10mm setting is an astounding 110`. If you shoot panos or interiors this lens makes that possible with a minimum of distortion. If you are processing your RAW images using Photoshop, the RAW editor allows you to use a lens profile to correct any barrel distortion. The 10-24mm has very minimal barrel distortion which is easily removed. The depth of field (focus) is insane at the max f-stops. This is a true wide angle zoom and the quality is worth every penny! ... show more

  • Great WideAngle Lens for DX users...
Color: Black
Bought this lens a couple of months back, and have loved shooting with it ever since. Recently just went to Italy. Before the trip I was debating whether or not I would need a wide angle lens like this. I have the new 18-200 vr II lens and thought I would be able to be fine. Against my intuition I went ahead and bought this lens. WOW. I am so glad that I did! It is a fantastic lens that allows you to be more creative and really make stunning images. People seem to get really caught up in technical details... this is a great lens that makes sharp and colorful images. If you read that it is not sharp, they probably don't know how to focus their camera correctly. 99% of image blunders are made by the photographer, not the camera or lens. If you love wide angle images, this is a must have lens for your arsenal. It is a solidly built lens, despite what other reviewers have said. Sure it's not pro standard, but who needs that anyway? And if it was built to pro standard it would cost probably about five times as much! Bottom line, it's a great lens, and you won't regret buying it. As for the 12-24, it's a great option. Definitely built tougher, and about the same price, but that 2mm makes a big difference. So if you want WIDE, go for the 10-24. ... show more

  • Nikon is clearly the best, perfect on a Canon body
Color: Black
This lens can mount perfectly as a manual lens on a Canon body, remember manual? It's how those photos in most galleries were done. I have used most WA lenses, the Tokina 11-16 is boat anchor heavy, and has bad purple flare, and the difference in weight, flare and sharpness, no way make up for the slight 1/2 stop gain. The sigma 10-20 to start with, has the worst flare wide open, it creates an entire full frame of flare, yes there is this thing called night, and when wide open kiss anything except experimental images good bye. Then there is the Tamron 10-24, nice if you want soft and flared images also. Good luck also with the Canon 10-22mm, finding sharp on both side wide open, not going to happen. I guess these quality issues are always because of a "bad sample" I received, not that they are poor choices for professional use I have been shooting landscapes and city images for years, I use my lenses on DSLR's, and sell the images to big TV productions as exteriors. I use the Nikon Wide Angle, and have sharp sellable images. Yes if your an amateur, then buy the cheaper lenses and be happy with the money you save. As for China, when is the last Apple product you use said made in Japan? It's a global production world, and in the end for me it's whats sharpest and flare control, that wins. Nikon 10-24mm, best WA lens. An excellent resource for lens comparison is the-digital-picure.com, all these lens are fully compared. Quality is clearly Nikon. Also the reviews of this lens are clearly positive, the positive reviews vs negative are 80 to 3. Clearly this lens is very positive. Perhaps the other lens companies stick something in just so they can try and sell their junk ... show more

  • Getting better over time
Color: Black
I had to return the first 10-24mm lens as I found an oily smear between the inner and outer barrels. I wiped it clean but it appeared again after rotating the zoom ring several times. Repeated cleanings did not resolve the problem. I was also concerned that the zoom ring did not rotate as smoothly as I had expected and it had a rather rough sound to it. The replacement lens did not have any oily material on the barrel but did have the same rough sound when rotating the zoom. Similarly, the zoom ring on the replacement lens did not rotate smoothly. I haven't had time to thoroughly review the quality of the photos this lens can produce, but I must say I am disappointed at spending over $800 on a lens that just doesn't seem to be built very well. Sept 2010 update: with use the turning of the zoom ring is getting smoother. Picture quality is excellent. I'm giving the lens four stars at this point. ... show more

  • Great Lens
Color: Black
I purchased the Nikon 10-24mm about 2 months ago and have had a chance to use it at several different events. I shoot using a somewhat photojournalistic approach, 2 bodies with a wide and a tele. The 10-24mm on a D70 body and an 18-200mm on a D200. With this setup, i found myself using both cameras about equally. The focus is fast, even in darker settings, and the image quality seems to be quite good. The 'fish-eye' distortion at the wide end is certainly present, but i found it to be manageable, maybe even 'manipulatable' is a better term. Its there when you want it, but it can be easily controlled/minimized when you don't need it to be so pronounced. Overall, the lens feels (to me) more like a 'normal' or 'prime' in close quarters. Extra wide certainly comes in very handy, and i found myself using the 10mm end quite a bit. The control layout is Nikon intuitive. The Manual Focus override is very helpful. The zoom ring grip feels generous and purposeful, I have bigger hands and don't particularly like the smaller grip on the 18-200 nearly as well. The zoom action is nice and smooth and the big lens shade is especially nice for keeping incident light out. I have read some reviews which knock the build quality a little, because its not at the same 'professional' level as the older 12-24mm, but i think the quibble over that in this plastic age is somewhat useless. Yeah, the 12-24mm barrel is beefier, but the range on the 10-24mm trumps that. I do a lot of volunteer work and don't need a robust casing to brave the elements. If you're generally careful with your gear, like most enthusiasts, you shouldn't have any problems. Just the fact that the 10-24mm sports a metal mount says a lot. And, again, 2 more mm at the wide end makes it a far more useful lens for about $200 less. Just my opinion. ... show more
