  • that it is well constructed and a beautiful lens, but outside of that
I bought this unit in the hopes that it would work correctly with my Nikon D5000 and D5300 SLR camera's. Unfortunately, I cannot tell when the picture is correctly focused (it appears so in the view finder, but when I transfer the disk to my PC, it appears slightly off). This is due to the "focus" green light does not appear (as it does with my other automated lenses. Unless someone can tell me what I am doing wrong, I feel that this is only a 3-star product. I can honestly say, though, that it is well constructed and a beautiful lens, but outside of that, just collecting dust in my camera bag. ... show more

  • I love it. I did sharpness testing
I recently bought the older "C" version of this lens. It is said, "it is not as sharp as "N", later version. I am using it on Sony mirror-less cameras... I love it. I did sharpness testing, placing the "C"on a tripod and a sales flyer as a test subject. about 16' away. Then I made another exposure with a nikkor 50mm f1.8 at f8 both @ ISO 400. I picked one letter on the flyer to focus both lenses on, framed the flyer equally sized for both exposures and compared the two images @ 100%. It would be difficult to say one was better than the other. That said, I give the ribbon to the 50mm nikkor 1.8... but not by much. The focus aids, bright screen and finder brightness make all the difference in using these relatively slow lenses. No more black screens to see through. The Nikkor 500mm "C" version has been bashed for years as a dog. They just didn't have the tools available we have now. IBIS makes this lens hand hold-able at 1/80 sec. Compared to the new 500mm samyang type lenses the Nikkors are an light years ahead and comparably priced. Focus is smooth as butter and with Sony's Live view, focusing zoom and peaking level it's the bomb. Bokeh is secondary to getting the image. Image posted was hand held 160th @ iso 400 back-lit window light. ... show more

  • Serious Defect
The outside surface of the lens is perfect as a used old optical instrument. Unfortunately, it got mouldy on the mirror and that was an irrevocable defect. I was disappointed by the description "like new".

  • Artists Lens
I'm using the pre-macro version of this lens. I have owned it for about a year and will not part with it. In fact I recently purchased the Macro (newer) version to add to my collection. This is not a cheap plastic lens found with most mirror's available today. This is a heavy, quality lens that is capable of taking some interesting pictures. Not only is the donut bokeh unique, it also has a slight barreling effect in full frame shots. I didn't notice this as much shooting on a crop sensor but on my Z7 it can be seen in the pictures. I for one, love taking shots with this lens but it is completely manual. Manual Fixed F8 aperture (Depth of field is still narrow on mirror though) Unique Bokel Fine but loose Focal Adjustment Worth every penny of $150-$200 (if you can find one without damage.) 88mm Filter Size (82mm on the newer/ Orange stripe version) Light!!! as compare to equivalent modern lens. • Nikon Reflex 500mm F8 N
This is one of the sharpest 500mm F8 Reflex lens that I have ever use other than my Nikon 500mm F4 VR2 AF-S . Its fast and Bright in Focusing with the Nikon D3S and Nikon D300s. Its donut background give me the different kind of feeling and different approach in a more artistic way rather then what a lot Professional rate it as "Messy Background ". Landscape and Birding Photos taken were Jaw Drop that is comparable to any High End Optical Telephoto lens . Focusing distance between objects and lens were superbly close . Contrast and sharpest were stunning . No regrets buying this piece of Jewel that is No longer made by Nikon . In time to come ,this Reflex lens is going be highly collectable and the price may shoot up to sky high . Here I rest assure that a lot Pro and Amateur that have use this piece of Jewel will agreed with me in terms of the price and quality built(Built like a Tank ). The Best of all Mirror Reflex 500m F8 lens ever built by Nikon in the late 80's. ... show more

  • Poor Man's 500mm Lens
The reflex lens is a good lens, basically a poor man's 500 mm lens. It is all manual focus and exposure. I usually use it with a Nikon TC-14A to multiply the Nikkor by 1.4 to 700 mm. The reflex 500 mm will never be as good as an AF-S 500 mm f/4. But it works well if used properly. The doughnuts or rings as the background can be used to ones advantage with careful background manipulation. The reflex 500 mm is inexpensive and light weight. It takes a little more effort to manually focus and figure out exposure. One definitely needs good light on the subject in order for this lens to be used. Even moonlight is considered good light. I had purchased this lens before I bought a Nikkor 80-400 mm AF VR lens. So, I really don't use this lens much anymore. But it is a fun lens to get a moonshot or as a long isolating telephoto shots. The enclosed photo is with a Nikon D2X, effective 35 mm focal length of 1050 mm lens at f/11 or so, probably at about 1/160 second exposure. Again, this lens is great for relatively static or stationary objects. A magnifier for the viewfinder would help, and a steady tripod is almost essential. This review is for the newer 5' minimum focus "N" and not the "C" model. A good used example should be between $300-$400. ... show more

  • Birds
I just wanted to get back yard photo's of birds & this lens is perfect for the price. It's constant f/8 makes it hard to get enough light for photo's close to & after sunset.

  • Amazing Nikon Lens!
I love this Nikon 500mm Reflex Lens! It is stunning. Bought it on the strong recommendation of The Angry Photographer! It is crystal sharp! Paired with a Kenko PRO 300 3X Teleconverter and Nikon D7200 24 Megapixel Camera. The result is a super sharp 1500mm Telephoto Lens that weighs just 2 pounds! With the 1.5x Crop Factor, it is 2250mm! I am stunned. And incredibly thrilled. I was told it couldn't be done! The photographs are gorgeous! They are tack sharp! ... show more
