Description

The new NK-180S kayak motor offers excellent performance and power to any kayak angler looking to increase their range and catch more fish on fresh or salt water. This brushless kayak motor offers excellent efficiency and extremely low noise with a direct drive design that allows you to sneak up on fish. It can be used with two affordable 12V lead acid deep cycle batteries, and lighter-weight 12V lithium batteries. Two operating modes, 24V and 25.9V, allow the motor to be powered with 2x 12V GEL, Lead Acid, or lithium deep cycle batteries, or a single 25.9V Lifepo4 battery (25.9V Lifepo4 battery is expected summer 2021.) This motor will greatly increase the effective range of any paddler on a given day, it will bolt directly to a 4 bolt PowerPole style stern mount, or can be installed into the deck of a kayak. The mount pivots freely to pass over underwater obstacles, but the durable aluminum motor head is ready for the ones you don't see. Steering cables can be setup to turn the motor like a rudder using your kayaks OEM mounted foot braces, or a pin can lock the motor in a forward drive position for use on SUPs and inflatable kayaks. Reverse is enabled with a pull cord which locks the motor in a deployed position, keeping the propeller from lifting out of the water while you back your way out of trouble. Regardless of your level of experience, the NK-180 offers an efficient, powerful motor in a durable package.

I found the install to be very easy, but as I work as an Electronics Tech and installer it may have made it easier, and the included info as well as videos were well done. Not having to purchase the motor with a proprietary battery was a huge part of my choice to purchase the NK180, and is one of the best features. I get excellent run time when running at about 80%, and it only drops my run speed maybe .3-.5mph. I'm a big guy, and I am using it on a Hobie PA14 360 loaded with gear. This motor is a game changer! I was skeptical about this product at first, but the fact that you can pair this motor up with other batteries of your choice was worth the purchase! My setup is an Amped Outdoors 24 volt 50ah LifePo4 with the NK180 on the back of my Bonafide P127. Everything you need to install is included in the box making it very easy. The customer service was great too. The motor helps me get to my spot quicker and easier which leaves me with more energy to fish. Less time pedaling and more time fishing. First time trying this product from Newport Vessels and I have to say I was so excited to install this in my Ascend 12Ft kayak. The install was so simple with the instructions. Unfortunately when I tried to power the unit on it did power on but the display wouldn’t read the correct Volts. Was using a 24V deep cycle battery but the display wouldn’t read the correct volts ( 12.6v ). Also the MODE button didn’t work properly. Had to press super hard for It to even work. Power button worked like a charm. Product/s may not have been tested before leaving CHINA. That’s the first problem. Also display was reading E-3. Brand new battery. 🤔👎🏽 ... show more

I caught this on sale for $200 less than normal. It was easy to install on my Hobie PA 14 Kayak. Using two 12v 50ah LiFePo4 batteries wired in series (to get the required 24 volts) the motor will push my Kayak along at 5mph top speed. I have yet to exhaust the batteries but I do also peddle and paddle some when fishing. Did not hook up the steering and have it pined straight ahead and use the Kayak rudder to turn. Works OK but for tight turns you would need to steer the motor. I choose this over the other more powerful unit because I did not want to be restricted to their battery pack and wanted to be able to replace them if they failed. ... show more

    • Great for kayaks, excellent product support, worried that it is not heavy duty.
This motor is brushless, light, estimated at 1.8HP, and great for getting around on the kayak. A fully loaded Hobie Mirage Outback, with maybe an extra 300+ pounds including passenger, fishing gear and tackle, 2 batteries (12V for fish finder and other accessories and the 50 aH 24V from AMPED Outdoors) can max out at slightly over 5 mph without wind. I've optimized the trim and motor depth and the maximum speed is consistent. They have a new motor now that is estimated near 3HP, that may max out at about 6.5 mph. I had an issue with fishing line getting caught in the propeller. I didn't know it, so in the middle of a long chain of lakes I got an error code. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, since I didn't have the proper tool to remove the prop and line. When I got home I fixed it, but the next time I took it out either the motor or the controller failed, or both. I contacted customer service, and they were excellent. Although I didn't have a motor for my tournament that weekend, I returned it and within two weeks got a new motor and controller. So customer service was excellent, there is a two year warrantee on the system, but now in the back of my mind I'm wondering if this motor too delicate for tournament fishing in a kayak?? ... show more

The motor works great! I have no complaints, the issue I have is that the throttle control has no real stop when you go from forward to reverse, no click no indent absolutely nothing that helps you identify that you have passed the Neutral on the controller. I have my motor hooked up to a Hobie PA14 and that little motor moves that yak at 4.8 mph in the ocean. Fantastic little motor. ... show more

Just installed the NK 180 on my Hobie Pro Angler 14’ 360 and it’s a game changer. Compared to the Bixpy and Torqeedo pice way cheaper and still achieves 5mph on the water. Easy to install and remove, very quiet, low power draw.

The NK180 is a great product. Amazon is shipping old stock product that does not include some recent updates that Newport has made to the mounting hardware. I'd strongly recommend ordering directly from the Newport website if you want the updated unit.
