  • Great budget laptop
This is a great low-cost system. Spend an extra $20 on a 120GB SSD (or $32 for a 240GB), and another $32 for 8 GB of RAM (or $65 for 16GB) and upgrade this system. Sure, you lose some disk space with the smaller SSD, but it really makes this system shine as 4GB of RAM and the 5400 RPM mechanical HDD are the bottleneck of the system. It's not going to be a speed demon and play intensive games, but it works great for college homework with Microsoft Office, and web browsing with a good amount of decent performance. Plays YouTube and YouTubeTV/Netflix perfectly fine. I even have VMware Workstation running an instance of Ubuntu Linux for tinkering. I am very happy with my purchase and recommend this system if you're on a budget. Pros: The notebook is light and has a good build quality. Screen is good. The keyboard feels good to type on. Lightweight. Bluetooth and TPM (support for Secure Boot and BitLocker [with Windows edition upgrade]). Cons: Screen not as sharp, bright and high resolution as higher end models (to be expected), fingerprint smudge magnet, sound is a little tinny (but it's a budget system, so hey). ... show more

  • Value and Simplicity
As is, it’s a decent computer for everyday use. Spend another $70 for 16 gb ram and it’s pretty damn good. It runs smoothly, it’s quiet, and it’s sturdy. I bought one for my daughter and was so impressed that I purchased three more for my work.

  • Upgradable Beginner Laptop
If you're a fan of traditional thinkpad laptops and can't find an older model in good condition, don't rule this one out yet. Although I'm not a fan of internal batteries and lack of support from 3rd party batteries, this laptop's batteries are easy to replace due to all components only needing a backplate removal with a screwdriver and spudger. The screen is modest widescreen TN panel, not pretty but better than most. Battery life is middle of the road at 3-4 hours when optimized, but if you're used to older laptops that's basically double the expectations. What the details in the page doesn't tell you is that not only is the RAM easily accessible and upgradable to 16GB (single stick only), but there is an unused m.2 slot where you you can put a full-size NVMe PCIe card. The catch is that there is no screw to hold it in place, so you can use another thinkpad long screw to hold it in place, or use one directly from the outside. The m.2 slot doesn't have cushioning either, so you can either make a long plastic washer to hold it in place, or use a foam sticker for bedding. You can get away without doing so thanks to the secure backplate, but don't count on it. But in exchange, once fully upgraded, you can boot from the NVMe slot and use the provided hard drive for media storage, and have enough storage for several virtual machines, with enough graphics to develop with Unity, and have CPU performance on par with an older i3. For Linux users: since this is an AC wifi card, Mint will not work out of the box and need drivers (haven't found them yet) or a compatible USB dongle. Everything else works out of the box. ... show more

  • Controlled by Microsoft store
Nice enough laptop, especially for the price, but it had a certain version of Windows or a Windows-addon that required ALL downloaded apps to ONLY go through the Microsoft Store. I tried to download Firefox, and could not, because all downloads had to go through Microsoft Store. This was a deal breaker. ... show more

  • This Lenovo IdeaPad is perfect for my needs.
This is my 3rd Lenovo laptop over a span of 20 years. I use my Lenovo IdeaPad for primarily non-gaming entertainment and document/spreadsheet projects, finding them to be reliable with processing speeds fast enough for my needs.
