  • If you want a sweet looking and performing gaming switch, look no further!
I had a old reliable and stable 3Com Office Connect switch for over 15 years I had used on a variety of setups on my computers and the past several years, was used to connect all my home consoles, HTPC and TV to my homes LAN connection. The jold 3COM switch had never given me an ounce of trouble over the years, but it was getting old and boring to look at and I needed an upgrade from 5 ports to at least 8 for my current and future needs. But I because I proudly display my home theatre setup, I wanted a switch that would look awesome with my equipment rather then stuffing in the back with will all the wires like most people do. This was proving rather difficult as most switches looked really boring and or had no LED's showing in the front to show activity, because what geek doesnt like blinky LED's? After lots of searching and about ready to give up and settle for a boring stock switch, I came across NetGears newest switch which is the successor to this model, but for $300 just to get adjustable RGB LEDs? Lol, I think not. It looked sweet and also still had LED"s to show activity and ports in the back. The price was also MUCH more reasonable, so I hit that order button! PROS: 1. Very nice build quality. This is no cheap feeling plastic chinese clone switch, everything is hefty metal and built solid! 2. Super bright and adjustable LED's. They are only BLUE but you can adjust brightness or turn off what you don't want 3. Easy to use and GUI if you want to tweak the switch a bit. 4. 4Gbit link aggregation if you really need fast LAN transfer speeds 5. Tweakable via smart phone APP 6. Handled all the gaming and 4k streaming and LAN file transfers I've thrown at it 7. Has QoS settings if you care about such things CONS: 1. No RGB color change LEDS, you have to to spend A LOT more for the newer model for that 2. No real routing capabilities. If you could care less about your switch on your network and just want it to "work" and never be seen, don't waste your money. If you wanna have a sweet looking networkingsetup with a great looking and performing switch to go with it, look no further! ... show more

  • Happy with purchase - good, simple, Mostly really easy to setup, delivers performance as expected
I used this as a second switch in a network with VLANs, and I'm very happy with it. Yes, you can't really "remove" VLAN1, but that doesn't prevent you from shifting everything, including the management interface from it. i.e. I have it tied tagged to a management port, so unless the traffic is tied to that port that only I will use, it's not a problem. I thought the interface was pretty quick and slick, I even enabled the power savings as this is for my living room that can sustain a pause after being unused for 20ish hours of the day - note, I think the default "timeout" for a slow(er) response is around 5min. I liked that the QOS isn't tied to the ports, but their interface to assign QOS is the only interface component that is clunky. That's the only area that I had difficulty navigating. Setting and testing the VLANs worked like a charm. There is one other thing that bothers me, and that is, you can't create users, there's only a device password. But, definitely delivers the speed it promises, though I will probably leave QOS to be set by my pfSense via VLAN. Though a bit pricey, probably would buy again. Oh, one more thing, the space between ports is TIGHT, note the jackets on cables, particularly if you use anything over CAT6, or just "Monster" -like cables. I didn't thankfully, but after using some cables around the house, it made me look closer at how "thick" the cable ends were. ... show more

  • Great NETGEAR switch that plays well with the Nighthawk X-10 router.
Bought this item to compliment my new NETGEAR CM700 cable modem and my Nighthawk X-10 AD7200 router. Use this to control my home theater equipment and a network repeater. Puts signal right in the best area for Wi-Fi and gives us the strongest signals for our IPads and IPhones. Metal construction and quality built as all NETGEAR products I’ve ever owned are. Easy to set up with the modem and also to set designated IP Adressess for devices like Onkyo Receiver, Apple TV 3rd generation, Windows HTPC and Oppo 4K player. Works well with all the other NETGEAR devices in this line. Has 7 ports where old model had only 4. Also all of the ports are 1Gb ports. My old unit had only one 1Gb port and three 10/100 ports. Now able to add more network connected devices to the entertainment center. A great switch for the new Nighthawk X10 router,as they works very well with each other. Also has on/off switch for blue LED light source it emits if you find it distracting. Mine is hidden in a Salamander Quad 30 AV base along with the IR reapeater for some of the equipment that’s in our closet server. So the blue LED isn’t a problem at all. My AV system backs up to the master bedroom and gives me a jack for my MacBook Pro in the bedroom area. This is great as I can get a direct connection to our MacBook Pro without relying on a Wi-Fi connection. ... show more
