We inherited our parents home and years later we discovered that the water heater was leaking just a little. We were getting the house ready to sell and did not want to install a $6,000 water heater so our family handyman of many years suggested this kind. He installed it last year and it gives us hot water on demand without using up all the hot water like the old one did. The only drawback is that we can't run the dishwasher or do laundry until we have finished with showers. You also can't run water in kitchen either until showers are over. We consider this is a small inconvenience that we can deal with for a short while until we move. If your finances at this time don't allow for a costly replacement water heater this may well be the answer for you.

UPDATE after 9 months of use: Water heater has randomly started turning off. Still heats water well. Hopefully just a glitch. The shutting off problem has stopped. Even if I had to buy a new one of these, it is a much better option than going with a bigger unit. My utilities have gone way down with this size of water heater. In a place where the water gets close to freezing it doesn’t always heat it up as hot as I would like, but for the size, I will say I am expecting more than it can deliver. You will never have the water too cold to use for showering, even when 2-3 points of hot water are being used - though it will be warm, though not unbearable for showering. The box said it will run 40 minutes continually before shutting off the heating element, but the instructions said 20 minutes. I don’t think I’ve run it more than 20 minutes so I couldn’t tell you which it is. But the manual says if it does shut off, just turn off all points of hot water, and turn on again. The sink with the shortest distance of pipe to the heater gets very hot. On hooking up - make sure you actually look up what pipe fittings you need or just buy a unit for $50–$100 more with the 3/4” fittings because it took me a whole day of running around to different stores to get the right ones. And I probably spent around that much on the adapters. So I was sort of mad at myself I just didn’t get one with the standard 3/4” fittings for a bit more. However, after several months of using - this thing is quiet - I can hardly hear it compared to the 17 year old tankless this one replaced. Temp is very consistent. Overall very good heater.

At present (out of the box) the water heater only heats the water to about 65-70 degrees. I can't figure out how to set it higher (the digital display only sets as high as 65 degrees). I will update this review if I can make it work...
