  • Combustible Gas Leak Detector, Audible & Visual Alarms, USB-C Rechargeable Battery
I ordered this combustible gas leak detector to scan propane and butane gas devices for possible gas leaks. While this is important for all appliances that utilize natural gas, propane, or butane, it is particularly important for those devices that are installed inside the home or other structures or are simply used indoors, such as a portable propane heater. What sets this product apart from the others available is the fact that it has a built-in USB-C rechargeable battery. I have another gas leak detector that utilizes two (2) AAA-batteries, but a fresh set of batteries will only last about one hour under continuous use. When I received this device, I immediately put it onto my USB-C charger to top-up the battery. That only took about five minutes indicating that it was sent to me nearly fully charged. The instrument has a battery charge indicator in the bottom right corner of the LCD screen. If the low battery indicator is displayed when the instrument is turned on or during its use, recharge the battery before continuing to use the instrument. Special Note: When the device is connected to a USB-C charging source, the LCD screen and the lights on either side of the device will glow Red, indicating that the device is being charged. When the charging is completed, the LCD screen and the lights on either side of the device will glow Green, indicating that the device is fully charged. When the USB-C charging cord is removed, the lights will go out. Please note that the instrument was supplied with a USB cable (USB-A to USB-C). To turn the instrument on, the "Power" button (Orange in color) is pressed and held for about one (1) second. The instrument will beep once, and the LCD backlight will turn on. When the instrument is turned on, it takes about 30 seconds for the sensor to warm-up and the instrument to become operational. While the instrument is warming up, the LCD 7-segment bar-graph will cycle indicating the sensor is heating. When the warm-up is complete, the instrument will beep twice to alert the user it is ready for operation. The Green "Sensitivity" button (marked with an "S") will also be lit. When the Green "Sensitivity" button is lit, indicating that the instrument is set to High Sensitivity, the sensitivity of the instrument is 50 to 500 ppm of combustible gas. When the Green "Sensitivity" button is NOT lit, indicating that the instrument is set to Low Sensitivity, the sensitivity of the instrument is 500 to 1000 ppm of combustible gas. Each time the Sensitivity button is pressed to change the sensitivity, the instrument will beep confirming that the change has been made. If the instrument detects combustible gas above the lower limit for the range selected, the instrument will emit a rapid beep sound, the LCD screen and the side lights will turn red, and the LCD screen will display a dynamic bar graph indicative of the concentration detected. The faster the beep and the higher the bar graph, the higher the concentration of combustible gas that is being detected. As the level of combustible gas drops, the beep rate and the bar graph will also drop. Once the concentration drops below the lower limit for the range selected, the LCD screen, the side lights will turn green, and the instrument will become silent. I have tested this instrument versus propane gas and butane gas. It detected both gases nearly instantaneously and responded as the manufacturer has indicated. I found that it is also capable of detecting sewer gas and certain adult beverage components. As the levels of combustible gas dropped, the instrument's response changed accordingly. The detector has one additional feature that will extend the battery life during use. If it detects that it is not being used for a period of five (5) minutes, it will automatically beep as it turns itself off. That said, I continuously used it for approximately one (1) hour testing a propane extension hose, and the battery charge indicator in the bottom right corner of the LCD screen was still showing four (4) bars indicating a near full charge. This is incredible performance. I am truly impressed by this small, but very handy instrument. It is perfect for my needs in testing propane equipment to be sure that there are no leaks and therefore, no accidents. I like the product very much. While it does not have all of the features and functions of other combustible gas detector instruments I own, it does have the USB-C rechargeable battery built into the instrument. This is an absolutely great and very much needed feature. ... show more

  • Not as sensitive as my nose, but more specific
This review is for Natural Gas Leak Detector - Sensitive Gas Leak Detector with Audible & Visual Alarm..., $16.99 I tested this on propane and natural gas (mostly methane). It detects both and gives a good audible and visual signal that it has detected the gas. However, at a level that I can smell gas, it does not register any, so my nose is more sensitive. Where this device is better is that it's easier to locate the source of the leak because the sensor is quite small and easy to move around in confined spaces. When you smell gas, you can use this device to locate the source by running the sensor along the pipes, connectors and hoses. But don't move it too quickly because it takes a second or two to register the gas. I wish I'd had this device when the propane was leaking from my barbecue. This tool is much more convenient than covering everything in a soapy solution and looking for bubbles! ... show more

  • It detected butane
I don't have any natural gas appliances but tested this on butane gas. It readily detected the butane as soon as the stream of gas got to the sensor. I used a small butane torch to make the test because it had been refilled with butane recently enough that it still had plenty in it. This device has two sensitivity settings. It defaults to high sensitivity, which is what you would want most of the time. You can switch it to low sensitivity by pressing the S button. The device, when first turned on, will go through a 30-second calibration test if you hold the power button down more than one second. If you don't do that, you will not know for sure if it's still in calibration or not. This uses a rechargeable internal battery. It was charged enough upon arrival that I did not need to charge it to test it. While this doesn't give you an exact concentration of the gas you are testing, it does tell you if a combustible gas is present, which is all that you normally need to know. It does that very well, in a way that's hard to ignore, as the readout turns red and the device makes a series of beeps to get your attention. ... show more

  • Works Perfectly
Had a suspected leak under my cooktop for the past 15+ years, people would say they smelled gas when opening the doors under the cooktop so I did the old soapy water and found no leak. Went to the suspected location and upon opening the doors I had an instant hit on the meter, pushing further inside the indicator turned red and faster beeping, so I vented the area and this thing pointed me right to the joint with the leak, shut the gas off, took the flex line off to check, all seemed good so put it back together, tightened it up and retested, no more leak. Now to get to the leak under the BBQ. Great product and easy to use. ... show more

  • effective gas detector for locating leaks
Sensor seems sensitive and accurate. -- TL/DR begin -- Adequately packaged with competent English documentation. Rechargeable battery is a nice feature and device comes with a short USB-A/C cable. Size and shape of device allows for use in tough to reach spots, though clear access is preferable. While this product could be used by moving through an open space, and looking for increasing detection bars on display, that would require a significant concentration of gas. It's more likely to be used selectively, along the known path of a gas pipe. Assessment logo on product and packaging (CE, FCC, UKCA). -- TL/DR end -- This detector definitely works, and provides a quantitative way to locate a source of gas. ... show more
