  • SO FUN
My daughter is 26 and she absolutely loves these. We have purchased these a few times. She puts the googles on and gets after it. She is excited with each one, she loves to study them and read about them in the book. Some are harder to crack open than others so you have to kind of start off slow and work your way up. If you purchase for younger children they will need to be supervised. It is worth every penny seeing their face after they get one opened. ... show more

  • Fun for all
I had so much fun with this. I would say be careful with kids though some of them I had to hit really hard with the hammer and others really gently.

  • Geodes
The geodes are cool, but they are very very very hard to crack open. A child could nowhere do that took an adult male

  • Pretty Geodes!
As someone who loves gemstones and geodes, I thought this would be great for me and the rest of my family. I love the variety and colors of the geodes. However, some were very hard to break open, but it's not like the seller can control the rocks. Overall, I recommend this!

  • 3/15 had crystals- others were sedimentary duds
I have a class of 10 middle school students over the summer. I bought the 15 pack. They were so upset that only 3 of the 15 had crystals inside. Imagine 3 of 10 kids got the experience I paid for. I was the bad teacher. This was sad. I thought it would be better because it came from National Geographic. I had to focus on lesson on sedimentary rocks and why they wouldn't even crack... students were so disappointed. ... show more

  • Great For A Young Beginner
For what it is, I'd give it four stars. I think that it's a great kit for a young beginner. The reason why I didn't give it five stars is because the majority of the geodes that were supposed to have crystals were solid all of the way through. Out of the fifteen that came, only three had a hollowed out center. Of the ones that had crystals in them, the majority (50%+) of the geode was not crystal formation on the inside. I feel like I ended up with more gravel for my driveway than something cool to look at. The pyrite geodes were pretty cool, once cracked they reveal some interesting looking formations. There was a pinkish looking one that seemed like a concretion which I have yet to identify. That being said, not all was lost. Some of these are fluorescent, so if you're wanting to add some extra delight for a child I highly recommend buying a UV flashlight to go with this! As a side note, if you do buy a UV flashlight, do not let your child handle it themselves since the light emitted from them can be very harmful to the eyes if looked into directly. ... show more

  • Ehhh..
Cute idea. I bought these for my nephews and I bought two. We smashed every one. Some of them were so tough we could not get them open. We had to have my dad break out his heavy sledge hammer. A couple were just rocks, no crystals. The few good geodes we did get were pretty, but non were colored. They were all white or clear, with two packs. I really wanted a purple one since thats whats on the package. All in all I was a little disappointed. ... show more
