These snake gaiters came with no instructions and weren’t well labelled. We almost couldn’t figure out what they were because they didn’t look like what we had expected. They are a bit difficult to put on. It's very easy to accidentally put them on upside down. The zipper end goes just below your knee. You should start by attaching the strap under your shoe to make it snug so that your ankle is not exposed. Once that is in place, then you can tighten the Velcro straps and buckles on the backs of the leg and fasten the optional strap for the pad over the knee with the strap that goes around the thigh above the knee. The pad over the knee is the part that can be zipped on and off. These gaiters have plenty of room to fit around even large legs. They should be cinched down to give a nice snug fit. It seems like these are for people with shorter legs as the gaiter top fell a few inches below the knee on a 5'10” man. When you cinch the straps down, the ends of the straps can be secured with the Velcro loops onto the rest of the strap. I recommend fitting the straps and adjusting the buckles for the proper fit first. Then you can release the buckle and wrap the Velcro strap around to hold the end in place. It is then ready for a quick on/off. This keeps the ends of the straps from dangling around as you're walking. These gaiters provide protection for the shin and calf area as well as for the top of the foot but depending on the height of your shoes there may still be some unprotected area at the ankle. These can help mitigate the risk of walking through areas where there might be poisonous snakes, but I would not take any unnecessary risks just because I was wearing them. These would also protect you from briars, thorns, and anything else that might hurt and would be especially good for use when clearing up overgrown areas. ... show more

These are almost like umpire/catcher protection. They provide much coverage. They'd also be great for thick brush with sharp stuff. No complaints yet.

These are legit snake gaiters. Unlike others out there, these do have the plastic inserts to provide protection from a strike. They hinge in the right places to provide fliexibility and comfort. I like using these as it provides a degree of safety while hiking through areas that are known to have snakes. Better safe than sorry. The looping under the shoe is robust and should last for a good while. (this is the most common part of gaiters to wear out) The only downside I can see, which is not unique to these, is that when wearing, your legs are going to get more sweaty than if you were not wearing gaiters. These have tough pads to cover the shin, tops of feet and knees. With hook and loop closures in various places to keep them and the straps secure they don't slip when wearing them for a while. Hiking around a hillside and creek embankment they provide plenty of flexibility. They do get a bit hot but that's perfectly worth if for this kind of protection. I have small calves and they're so adjustable I didn't have a problem getting them wrapped around my left and tightened down with the straps and buckles. ... show more
