sound good

  • You Will Need Sunglasses!
Yeah, the blue light. What the hell? So powerful it actually hurts your eyes. Other than that... I've been playing for over 30 years, and only recently have I decided to learn some Van Halen for fun. Tough stuff to play, but tone-wise, picking up this pedal has made nailing Eddie's sound a breeze. It sounds so cool when you kick it in for solos and that gorgeous swirling sound takes the notes to an entirely new level. Yeah, Eddie had some cool tricks up his sleeve! There's just a subtle difference between the block and script settings (script is a little more subtle), but as others have said, you'd be hard pressed to notice. But here's a little trick to nail the early EVH sound: engage the script button and point the dial at the word "Script" and there it is! Apart from the EVH sound, you can nail that cool Robin Trower "Leslie" tone, too. There's really so much you can do with it. And I never had a volume drop as others have noted--perhaps they aren't clear as to how exactly a phase pedal modulates your sound? I don't get it. In fact, I find that engaged with the dial completely turned down, you get a nice preamp sweetness that makes the notes pop. It's really hard not to sound good with this thing! So the bottom line is, this is a real winner and quite cool aesthetically, especially for those of us 80s brats raised on Van Halen. I picked mine up for $110 here on Amazon. If you want the sound but not the EVH graphics and the choice between block and script, get a regular block Phase 90 for much less money, and you'll be happy--it will essentially do the same thing. Have fun! ... show more

  • DON'T BUY FROM ZORRO SOUNDS!!!
This pedal is amazing, but DO NOT buy it from Zorro Sound. The item came late, was defective, and they have no customer service to speak of. I called them literally 20 times within seven days trying to exchange the pedal. They only answered one of the times, (15th I think?) and said they would email me a return slip. They never did. Zorro Sounds also never returned any of my calls. I had to go to my local repair shop and salvage the pedal, which is an exceptional sounding pedal. If you want to sound like EVH, buy this. Just don't buy it from Zorro Sounds. I can't stress enough how frustrating it was to deal with Zorro Sounds. I needed the item by a certain day so I express shipped it, but it still didn't come in time. When I finally got it, the pedal wasn't working which was heartbreaking. When I tried to contact them, it took five days before I actually got a hold of someone. And, of course, they never made things right in the end. They never returned any of my calls, yet were able to send two emails asking for me to leave positive feedback for them on Amazon. They are crooks and you will be throwing your money away if you order from them. This a great pedal for all genres of music... just DON'T BUY FROM ZORRO SOUNDS!!! ... show more

  • and sounds nothing like Van Halen
Does EXACTLY what it should, helps nail Eddie's EARLY tone... ***NOTE*** it took a lot of config changing, searching online etc... to find, but do yourself a favor, put this in front of your preamp, not in the effects loop, and before your distortion in the chain. I know this sounds the exact opposite to the advice everyone gives for effect chains, and what order everything should go in. In the FX loop it is WAY too treble-ly, and sounds nothing like Van Halen. Eddie does not use the FX loop on his amp (at least never did during the first 5 or so albums), so when he was using the phaser, and relying on amp distortion, he was running this in the pre-amp, pre-distortion. Kick this on as you break into a VH solo, and you hear the magic came through. Very subtle but NAILS it. If you are after a Phaser for a 'Mayonaise' (Smashing Pumpkins tone) look for another pedal with more low end. This one shines in replicating early Van Halen. ... show more

  • If you love Eddie Van Halen this pedal is for you!
Anything with EVH on it has to be good and this pedal is great! Love how there is a button that switches between the old script model phase 90 and the newer block letter style. The script has a more sustained sound and on block the phase sound gets faster with a more wah wah sound. One of my favorite pedals. ... show more

  • Good sound but cheap paint job.
Great phaser sound that can be turned up for a crazy psychedelic effect. No detrimental affect on the overall volume or tone in the pedal chain. Only issue I have with it is the crappy paint; when a rubber foot underneath was applied and then immediately removed to preposition it a chunk of paint came with it, clear off, exposing bare metal. Spend a few extra bucks MXR and paint the unit properly! ... show more

  • Great, versatile phaser
Excellent, versatile little pedal for a range of classic, usable phasing effects. Not just for Van Halen fans, this pedal with it's "script" button gives you both effect types found in the standard MXR Phaser, and reissue "script logo" models. (It's just a subtle difference, mainly the standard MXR has a little more harsher mid-tone spike to it which is great for a pronounced phase rhythm effect, and the more tamed "script logo" sound which is better when soloing with distortion.) It's construction looks very solid, it's blue "on" light is practically blinding (like a deer in the headlights?). The only little annoyance I had when hooking this pedal onto my pedalboard was where the AC connecting input slot was found - on the side, close to the 1/4 inch guitar cable coupler. It just meant I had to place the phaser a little further apart than normal, to clear the daisy-chain connector. Apart from that, it's an excellect phaser and highly recommended for all styles, whether you're playing clean or overdriven, rock or jazz, or anything in-between. ... show more
