  • High quality hiking poles
Made the right decision to purchase this hiking poles. I feel very stable dispite how light the poles are. The cork grips fit well into my hand and not slippery when wet.

  • Take these poles where toughness and dependability is of paramount concern.
I’ve been hiking for more years than I care to admit and sometimes I’m slow to give up older technologies. That was my approach to using trekking poles. My wooden hiking stick had been my most steadfast companion for several decades and I was reluctant to move to the modern trekking poles, although I noticed many younger hikers were moving down the trail apparently quite happy with them. Then, I had an opportunity to try some out in exchange for a Vine review. Consequently, the MX-4 by X Carbon Tech is the third pair I have tried and reviewed. In some ways, they are the best. Of those I’ve tried, MX-4s are the first made of carbon fiber and therefore, the lightest at 6.45oz each (with a rubber all-terrain tip attached). The Aluminum poles (7.97oz each) I have been using the last year weigh an average of 1.52oz more per pole. I can’t say which of the types (aluminum or carbon fiber) are stronger, but I used the MX-4s on a rugged and steep four day backpacking trip and a subsequent 9.5 mile hike and they held up extremely well. There was never any time at which I felt I was putting an undue strain on them. In fact, I came to trust them without question. The poles extend and contract by using a cantilevered quick clamp that is quite easy to adjust and operate. Furthermore, over five days of heavy use, the clamps didn’t once allow the poles to slip, keeping them extended to exactly the length at which I had them set. Likewise, the ultra comfortable cork handles do not get slippery as the day heats up and your hands begin to sweat. The poles come with some nice assessories including a sheath that envelops both poles to protect your car from the dirt the poles will inevitably collect along the trail. Additionally, there are three types of tips for varying terrains (including sand and snow). All are well made and appear quite durable. The snow and sand bails actually screw on to the pole tips to keep them in place. Unfortunately, one rubber all-terrain tip became dislodged along the trail on the first day of the four day backpacking trip and was consequently lost. Fortunately, my hiking partner found another one the next day and I utilized it for the remainder of my trek. Although I have decided these will be my poles of choice, there are a couple of minor modifications I'd like to see. First, figure out why one of the all-terrain tips came off and was lost. Although the poles worked just fine without the tips, that shouldn’t happen. Second, the part of the strap that wraps around the back of the hand could use some stiffening material to make the straps just a bit easier to get on and off. Lastly, and most importantly, the rubber all-terrain tips are hard and rounded and I found they occasionally slipped as I was pushing off to maintain or gain forward momentum. (They never slipped when I was putting weight on them to maintain balance). I really like these trekking poles and they will replace the excellent aluminum poles I have been using this past year. I especially like the light weightedness of them and they seem sturdy and durable. The handles are not slippery when damp and I could depend on the poles' length to stay where I set them. These will be the poles that I take with me on my extended backpacking treks where toughness and dependability is of paramount concern. I highly recommend them. ... show more

  • Strong, well-made, and extremely light; but carbon fiber is a matter of personal taste.
I got these trekking poles because I've read that carbon fiber is both very strong and extremely light. For the past few years my husband and I have been using some less expensive Z-fold aluminum trekking poles that fold small enough to fit inside a pack. They weren’t terribly expensive, but they’ve performed really well, and the Z-fold is convenient for overseas travel. I wanted to try something lighter, though, and I was pretty sure I would like these. The poles really are light. Though not quite the 175 grams advertised, they are still only 186 grams versus the 293 grams we now have (see photo). They have the pre-marked quick-lock adjusting mechanisms most poles now have, so they are easy to adjust. And they come with a carry case and tips for different terrain. I love that they have cork handles like our previous poles, because cork is SO much more comfortable than a composite on a long sweaty day of hiking. As soon as they arrived I took them out for a short but rocky 3-mile hike, and we’ve been using them on different surfaces (woods, muddy grass, bike path, etc.) since. I thought I would really like the poles, but they aren’t quite right for me. While they are extremely light, which is wonderful, they feel just a bit harder and just slightly more jolting on my wrists. I also feel a bit of vibration every time I plant them, which bothers me. I think this may be the trade-off with carbon fiber: they are light and hard, but they don’t flex or absorb impact the way my softer, albeit heavier, aluminum ones do. As it turns out, my husband tried them and really likes them. Apparently he doesn’t notice the slight extra impact and vibration that bothers me, and he appreciates the lighter weight. So they are his now. Because the poles are adjustable for a variety of heights, they fit him, too. What I’d say about these poles to anyone considering buying them is that they are strong, light, easy to adjust, come complete with multiple terrain tips and carry case, and are solidly made. Whether carbon fiber is right for everyone is the question. ... show more

  • Surprisingly light and sturdy.
I had never used trekking poles before, and I see plenty of people using them, and decided to try these out. Since they're my only experience I don't have anything but a wood walking stick to actually compare them to. They seem very heavy duty, but super light weight. I adjusted them and they stayed at the adjustment that I set. The handles are comfortable for me, so I'm very happy with the quality for the price. Problem is, I don't really enjoy using them, (nothing against the quality for functionality) I like to have my hands free while hiking. So these got used enough for me to realize that, and next season I'll likely give them to a hiking club, or maybe someone I meet on the trail. If I was going to use poles, I'd be very happy using these. ... show more

  • Nice poles for the price
Been through my fair share of trekking poles over the years, and these MX-4 carbon ones are legit solid for the price. The carbon fiber cuts down the weight without that flimsy flex you sometimes get on cheap poles. They’ve got a good swing, solid grip, and the locks actually hold firm on steep climbs. No slipping mid-hike, which is usually my first gripe. I like how easy and fast it is to adjust. ... show more

  • Incredibly lightweight
So I got confused by this and thought that I would get two of them. I didn’t. I got one and that’s my fault not theirs. That said it’s an incredibly good stick for walking. It’s really portable. It’s incredibly comfortable and incredibly easy to adjust. It’s super light. I guess that’s carbon which I’ve never used before. Have done several miles with us now and up and down the California coast it’s been worth its weight in gold. Would absolutely regret. The only thing I would say is it does scuff slightly easy still five stars I added tons of miles. ... show more
