  • Awesome keyboard, some software issues
Size: MX2A Brown Color: Black
Overall, great keyboard! Types really well, mx2a brown switches are great. Very consistent sound across all keys. The default "install cherry software" key on FN + F9 opens a scary windows run command that navigates to a Chinese website (cherry.cn). Software doesn't seem to allow for layered color effects (like a default color + ripples). Overall great keyboard, I would like to see some software improvements, as well as a way to remove the macro from the FN + F9 key. ... show more

  • Amazing keyboard.
Size: MX2A Red Color: White
I have been waiting for its release for months, and I'm not disappointed in any way. The board is heavy and feels premium. It has customizable RGB and custom macros through cherry software. No issues and very, very happy overall.

  • High quality, but can't compete
Size: MX2A Red Color: White
The build quality is nice - it feels like Cherry made something that's intended to last. In fact, it's well made to the point that most of my 4* rating is based entirely off of how sturdy this keyboard is. Outside of that, I can't help but feel, while this is by all means a good keyboard, it's not quite there in terms of what the rest of the market offers. I'd bet something like this would have been insanely popular like, 5-10 years ago. That seems to be an issue for Cherry; they've been pretty behind the trend since the mechanical keyboard hobby starting taking off. At the end of the day you have a tray-mounted mechanical keyboard with a somewhat novel chassis design that helps reduce sound transfer into the desk. For someone who doesn't know much about mechanical keyboards, or doesn't want to bother, this actually is a decent option for a very standard full size keyboard. That's to say, the XTRFY MX 3.1 is competitive in the world of mass-manufactured "gaming" keyboards where Cherry is up against products from, say, Razer or HyperX. For anyone who wants something with more customization...I'd look elsewhere, even for a full size board where budget-friendly is a more difficult endeavor. At a $120 price point, I don't quite see where the value is. Looking at only one other brand: Keychron offers a few 100% boards that are both hot-swappable and run QMK/VIA for much more powerful and intuitive firmware capabilities (custom layers being the biggest one). Actually, they're even $20-$40 cheaper; you can buy a V6 Max, fully built, for around $100 - it's not aluminum, but it utilizes QMK/VIA, is hot-swappable, has a gasket mount design, AND has a programmable knob. Considering a product like that, I'm not sure I would recommend the XTRFY MX 3.1 to anyone who was asking about a full-size mechanical board. Ultimately, I'm left wondering what makes this board stand out from the overwhelming number of options on the market right now. Sure, it's well made, and having an aluminum chassis is a nice touch. To my point about value, this board isn't even a good entry into the world of custom mechanical keyboards in the way that a Keychron or other hot-swappable board might be. It's basic, and though it does basic very well, I don't find that to be good enough in the current market. Below, I'll leave some notes I made while I was trying this keyboard out. Pros: Out of the box, all stabilizers on my board were free of rattle, which honestly goes a long way in terms of typing experience and feel. This alone contributed a lot to my good impressions of the board's quality. It comes with a couple of screw-in feet that will increase the typing angle, which I find to be fairly necessary since the default angle is pretty flat. The keycaps, which I have other issues with (under "Cons"), are legitimately double-shot. No UV-printed or laser etched garbage that will wear off into an ugly blob after a couple of years. Cons: USBC port is recessed in such a way that it's not compatible with all cables, though most cables where the USBC connector isn't too bulky should fit if you're not opting to use the included cable. I don't love the stock keycaps; they're slick and OEM profile is too cylindrical for my taste. The typeface is also a little too gamer cliché. Also, this may be a little bit of a nitpick but I don't understand why some punctuation keys are arranged in the classic vertical orientation (e.g. how < and , are stacked on top of another) while others are side-by-side. Sub legends, where vertically stacked, don't illuminate well; this is a common issue with shine-through keycaps, however. The built-in FN+F9 combination to bring you to a website to download the Cherry utility defaults to the Chinese-language site. The English site doesn't have the software under their "Support & Downloads" section for the product. Though, once installed, that key combination opens the software itself. It uses a command line script to achieve all this which is...fine, I guess. There's a lot of light bleed from the side/ambient RGB, so if you want to have that on with the backlights off, or one of the reactive backlight options, you're still going to have that showing up through the top sides. The Cherry utility is pretty necessary if you want to customize RGB beyond the dozen-ish rainbow vomit settings and two or three white backlight modes you can access with the FN key combinations. While very similar to other proprietary keyboard utilities it's unintuitive when it comes to re-assigning keys, and you might actually need another keyboard to do extensive reassignment within the utility (such as changing to another layout like Colemak or Dvorak). ... show more

  • Exemplary performing gaming/office keyboard - may not appeal to all keyboard enthusiasts
Size: MX2A Red Color: White
The Cherry XTRFY MX 3.1 packs a full-size keyboard layout into a sleek extruded aluminum housing intended to preserve the longevity. It boasts gamer-enthusiast features like German-made Cherry MX2A gold crosspoint switches and noise dampening foam. The key layout is cleanly presented and there's a row of LED's above the arrow keys to indicate the status of Num/Caps/Scroll lock functions. The Cherry profile ABS shine-through keycaps with gamer-inspired font legends provide a pleasing visual display of the 16.8 million colors from the bright RGB lighting along with the attractive looking side panel grills. The keycap legends are crisp and cleanly integrated through double-shot molding and there is an abrasion-resistant coating applied providing a comfortable feel. The aluminum housing is finished with a pristine silver texture with a recessed Cherry logo on the front panel and a cut out for the slightly recessed USB connector on the rear panel. It looks like it will accept a variety of custom cable jack sizes and the keyboard comes with a nice braided cable as well. There are provisions for 2 typing angles by installing a pair of threaded feed inserts on the front edge. This keyboard is clearly targeting gaming enthusiasts with an emphasis on delivering consistent performance and long-term reliability. It trades off niche features like hall-effect switches for long-term reliability of Cherry MX2A mechanical switches and a rugged build quality. The sound profile of the keyboard is very quiet; almost silent as compared with the thocky or clacky sounds from keyboards with tape mods and removed internal foam layers. Likewise, the keycaps have relatively thin walls and relatively quiet, making this a very suitable keyboard to use in an office environment. While this is a very competent keyboard with a premium build quality, it may not appeal to all keyboard enthusiast with other target features (like sound profile) in mind. The typing experience is good, but not as satisfying as the poppy feel and sound of a Rainy 75, Bridge 75, or ND75. For me, this keyboard has a very specific consumer in mind. If you're a gamer and appreciate a reliable keyboard with super-consistent response and long-term reliability, this should be on your list for consideration. Or, I would also consider this a very good contender for a full-sized reliable office keyboard (assuming that the RGB lighting settings were turned off or set to one color). The 110 key layout will certainly appeal to many for office use. However, this may not necessarily appeal to keyboard enthusiasts who are looking for that ASMR sound and feel that they are pursuing with the latest round of product offerings and custom mods. The MX 3.1, however, delivers reliable performance and valued features for it's key gamer demographic. Highly recommended. ... show more
