  • Big
This thing is by far the best ladder stand I've ever seen in person. Plenty of room for 2 people and very sturdy. I like that it is taller than most ladder stands as I like to be higher in a tree to help stay undetected. I normally hunt in single hang on stands at least 20ft high but I needed a 2 person stand to take my kids youth hunting and this is perfect. The seats are far more comfortable than traditional bench seat type ladder stands and it also flips up for more standing room for shooting bow. ... show more

  • Frustrating Assembly, Missing Parts, and Poor Craftsmanship - Disappointed
I purchased the Muddy Nexus XTL with high hopes, but I've been left thoroughly disappointed. The stand came with major blemishes to the coating. It seems as if there is no forethought on packaging at all with these stands. Assembling this product turned into an absolute nightmare. Firstly, the instructions provided were terrible - confusing and unclear. This day and age how hard is it to film a simple assembly video and put a QR code link in the instructions? To make matters worse, several key pieces were missing right out of the box. I had to pause my assembly and call Muddy to ask for additional parts, which delayed the entire process. This was not just inconvenient but also frustrating, considering the price and expectations set by the brand. The most infuriating part, however, was the poor craftsmanship. The pre-drilled holes on the platform didn't align correctly, creating a significant obstacle. I was forced to resort to using a hammer to get the bolts through (see pictures) a step that should never be necessary in a product like this. This not only made the assembly process longer and more laborious but also raised serious concerns about the overall quality and safety of the stand. Overall, my experience with the Muddy Nexus XTL was far from satisfactory. It's disheartening to see such a lack of attention to detail and quality in a product that promises so much. I would not recommend this product based on my experience - it's just not worth the hassle and potential safety risks. ... show more

  • Compairing Nexus XTL to River's Edge Lockdown™ 21' 2-Man stand
I was looking for a sturdy, 20' 2-man stand and purchased the Nexus XTL and River's Edge Lockdown 21' stands. The Nexus was $350 and the Lockdown was $450 (through Manufacturer website with 10% coupon and free shipping). Both are quality, sturdy, well made stands that I will be happy with. Both took 3-4 hours to assemble (by myself). The directions were pretty good, but I think Nexus's drawings were a little clearer and easier to understand. I also believe the Nexus had a couple less parts. The biggest selling point for the Lockdown was that all the hardware came in individually labeled plastic bags that were labeled to correspond with each step in the instructions. I think there were a total of 15 steps and 15 bags. This may not sound like a big deal, but both stands used lots of different length bolts. In addition, the Nexus used 1/4" diameter and 5/16" diameter bolts, with both being in 4-5 different lengths. Therefore, for the Nexus stand you are digging through one large bag of hardware, measuring each bolt with a tape measure to find the right length. The differences in length were often only 1/4", so it was hard to tell the size needed just be looking at the bolts. With the Lockdown, you had the exact number and sizes of bolts in each labeled bag and they were all 1/4" diameter, therefore only requiring one size wrench (7/16") to assemble the stand. The Nexus uses oval shaped ladder legs that appear very strong. The Lockdown uses oval shaped legs, but they are smaller than the Nexus legs. However, the Lockdown also uses a middle reinforcement bar running the full length of the ladder, greatly increasing the strength. I think either stand will hold up to the rated weight. However, I liked the fact that the Nexus ladder has no bar running down the middle that could interfeer with foot placement on the ladder. Not a big deal to me, but it might be a consideration for others. The powder coating finish is high quality on both stands, but both stands have bare spots from the parts rubbing together in the box. I suspect that I will need to touch up these areas with paint if I want to avoid rust in the spots where the paint is worn off. It would have been nice to put padding between the pieces or wrap each piece in padding. As a side note, both came in large boxes that were pretty torn during shipping. Luckily, none of the pieces were bent, but I could see parts falling out of the boxes if the damage was any worse. I really like that fact that the shooting rests on both stands are adjustable. However, the Nexus only allows you to raise or lower the rest, while the Lockdown also allows you to adjust the distance of the rest from the stand, using telescoping rods with clamps that are easy to adjust in the field with no tools. Both stands use a strap or cable system that wraps around the tree and is then ratcheted tight at the base of the ladder. This allows you to install the stand and make it fairly secure from the ground, before climbing the stand and putting additional ratchet straps around the tree. The only problem with this system is that the straps have to be routed around tree branches, which can be a challenge if they are 15-20' high. For the Nexus, I had a buddy climb the stand before it was fastened to the tree to cut off branches and cross the straps and then feed them down to the ratchets. However, the Lockdown stand came with a telescoping rod with a hook on the end that is used to route the straps around branches from the ground. The rod is then collapsed and used to secure the ladder to the tree, about half way up the stand. The Nexus rod is adjustable, but does not have the hook nor does it extend to a long enough length to be useful for routing the straps around the tree. However, the Nexus used steel cables to form the X behind the tree and the cables then attach to straps that go to the ratchets. I feel like the cable will hold up better than the straps over time. I didn't see the platform dimensions for both stands in the ads and forgot to get measurements before installing the stands, but it appears as if the Lockdown stand may have a larger (wider and deeper) base to stand on and wider seat. Both are adequate for two hunters. The assembly of the Lockdown was more complicated and less intuitive than the Nexus. However, I wouldn't call either one hard to assemble, its just a lengthy process. The Nexus uses bolts and nuts to hold the ladder sections together. The Lockdown uses three knobs at each joint to attach the ladder sections together. I've never seen this type of system and it took me a minute to figure out how to use it. However, it seems very secure and allows sections to be added or removed in the field without any tools. The seats can fold up on both stands and both are made of a webbing material that I'm hoping will stand up well outside. I leave my stands up year round and the fabric covered foam seat pads I've had on other stands get destroyed by animals and the sun, so I'm hoping these stand up better. Time will tell. If both were the same price, I think I'd go with the Lockdown, simply because I really liked the fact that I didn't have to dig through a bag of hardware to find the pieces I was looking for. Sounds like a minor issue, but I'm guessing it saved me at least 30 minutes. However, since the Lockdown was $100 more than the Nexus, I think I would go with the Nexus. I feel like both stands are sturdy, well designed, well made and will stand up for years. I hope this information is helpful to you in your search for a new stand. ... show more

  • PITA to assemble and comes rusted and scratched
Overall it is a good tree stand for the price. It took about 3 hours to assemble. It is a good design but you can tell the company doesn't care about the end product though. Pros: Affordable comfortable well designed for the most part I was concerned how stable it would be but it is pretty stable. Cons: The packaging caused everything to get scratched really bad. No protective measures were taken. Just putting come cheap cardboard between the pieces would have stopped this. Some of of the ladder rungs are rusted from the manufacturer. The bolts that hold the ladder sections together are exposed on the outside by 1/2". These could easily rip open your hand when going down the ladder. They should supply caps or the proper screw size. The box they ship it in is not thick enough. I wasn't missing parts but I can see why the boxes break during shipping. Really bad power coating. The directions are pretty bad. I had to reread them several times and take things apart due to bad instructions. The hardware is just thrown in a big bag. If they cared they could have individually packed each screw type. The hardware is not super cheap but it is poor quality. The bottom support tree brace is not long enough. It is about 6" too short. ... show more
