  • The Main Compartment of Military ALICE Backpack closes by means of a drawstring secured by a plastic cord clamp. A radio pocket is located against the back on the inside. The size of the pack may be decreased for smaller loads by means of three para-cord ties, stitched to the inside bottom of the pack, and three metal D-rings located directly below the internal radio pocket. It can be used with or without the LC-1 Field Pack Frame.
  • Three Utility Pockets on the outside, with strap and buckle adjustable closures and with snap fasteners for quick access, are provided for miscellaneous items. The top flap has a pocket with a hook and pile fastener tape sealed closure. Equipment hangers are located above each outside pocket and on each side. Drainage eyelets are provided in the bottom of the main compartment and the outside pockets.
  • An envelope pocket is located at the top, back of the pack and padded with spacer cloth, into which the field pack frame is inserted when the field pack is used on the field pack frame. Buckles and straps at each side near the bottom are used for anchoring the field pack to the field pack frame. Two rectangular wire loops located at the top back of the field pack and D rings on each side at the bottom of the field pack are used to provide shoulder strap attachment.
  • ALICE Rucksack System padded and easily adjustable shoulder Straps help relieve pressure, meanwhile the Kidney Pad strap on the frame also helps heave loading. Quick Release Buckle allows the whole pack to drop immediately while in emergency situation. Mixed Aluminum and Iron External Frame makes it lightweight but stronger.

All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment (ALICE) introduced in 1974 was made up of components for two types of load: the "Fighting Load" and the "Existence Load". The ALICE Pack system was designed for use in all environments, whether hot, temperate, cold-wet or even cold-dry arctic conditions. It is still quite popular among not only military users, but also Camping, Traveling, Hiking, Hunting, Bug Out, and Soft games. Three Utility Pockets on the outside, with strap and buckle adjustable closures and with snap fasteners for quick access, are provided for miscellaneous items. (The ALICE sleeping pad is not included in the pack) The ALICE Field Pack Frame Innovative rib configuration allows the frame to flex around the user's body for load bearing comfort and increased range of motion. If you're like me, you like to camp in the wild. Way out there, where sunshine has to get pumped in and the nearest Walmart is a 15 hour ride. That means you need gear. I wrote a crappy review initially because the seller delayed so long in shipping. Hoping to motivate them to get it delivered on time. But it turns out it worked. It took them a day and a half to get it shipped. But once it shipped it did arrive on time by the prime deadline. That said I can tell you from personal experience that I have full knowledge of the quality of the original Alice pack. I used one extensively in basic training. Anyone who says that this is not as good as the original is simply romanticizing the past. This is a significant upgrade. The frame is sturdier and lighter. The Pact material is three times as tough and offers water resistance where the original Alice pack had no water resistance. There's also a grab handle if you like that sort of thing. I personally don't like grab handles because it's one more thing to get snagged on something. But if you like grab handles at the top of a backpack it has one. This is almost an exact replica of the original Alice pack. But it is improved in almost every way. I also upgraded mine with the replacement of the original frame with the Army's new GI issue medium rucksack frame. I now have the ultimate combination of durability, Comfort, capacity, and maneuverability. Slap a GI issues sustainment pouch on each side of this bad boy and you got one hell of a rucksack ... show more

I bought 3 of the mediums in o.d., One for myself, and 2 for gifts..Seem to be just what I was looking for., I'm 5ft, 11" tall, and 180-190 lbs., 40" waist, and still enough belt legnth left over for wider folks.

This is a Good pack in its current configuration. In many ways, its identical to the military version I received as a scout in my youth from my dad as Army surplus. While I was not in the military, that pack and I went on a lot of adventures. Buying this one again now that my children are in scouts, I was hoping for the same thing. Close! BUT: You need to do a bit of work to get it to GREAT! First: Not too Waterproof. Spray it with 2-3 coats of StarBrite Waterproofing Spray. Second: Replace the buckles with Fastex Clips. Easy Mod, no sewing required. Third: Replace the Stock Drawstring with 550 Paracord and tie Monkeyfists on the ends. Last: Add the Metal shelf to the base of the frame. Doing all of this really makes this a GREAT pack that I would have given 5 stars to. The only additional item that was missing in the pack was the pass-throughs behind the exterior pockets that was a great place to keep a Hatchet or other long handled tool. To start, I took this on only 4 major hikes before it started to fall apart. My first minor hike I noticed that the right strap buckle wouldn’t keep taught and my right shoulder strap kept loosening every time I would take a deep breath. The last major hike I went on kept the items dry in a torrential downpour which was nice but the buckle that pulls both of the shoulder straps together completely busted 4.5 miles into the ruck, and then the middle external pouch completely busted off at the seams. This item looks good but will not last you in the long run. Not to mention how heavy the pack is to start. If you can’t afford something nice just save your money until you get the nice item. Love this bag. I got it as a sort of throw all my survival gear in one place kinda thing. I am by no means someone who knows a lot about these things but as far as quality of the product I believe it is very solid. I believe no matter who you are you are getting something worth the price tag.

Simple and rugged. I repaired weather radar on top of water towers for 6 months, on many occasions this was loaded up with parts and tools. On several occasions I cargo strapped over-sized items weighing around 40 lbs to it. Still solid as a rock after that and general abuse throughout a very mobile and active job. Before that I used it for carrying school books. This isn’t a conventional pack, but it’s simple, tough and useful if you’ve got a lot of stuff to haul. ... show more

Short Review: Great fabric, seems correctly listed. But a cursory initial inspection/comparison which turned up seemingly inferior metal components made me return this pack. Your chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If you are not planning on beating up your gear, this pack may suffice. However, for those who are a bit rougher with their stuff, spend $10.00 more (at the time of this review) and get the real, time tested, tried and true article. Longer review: SO... I have a couple old used USGI ALICE packs lying around. I obviously love them. I came across this listing. 1000D oxford stitched fabric, water proof... maybe it is time to upgrade??? The original USGI Alice packs are... I don't know, 420D? They definitely aren't water proof. They have this "gubmint" rubber thingy underneath the main cover which just cracks away after 30 years... So I decided to take a chance... Unfortunately, I ended up returning this. Here is why: The fabric looks about right. Thick. Stitching was correct. Oxford fabric. NOT exactly waterproof (because of design), but the fabric itself definitely looked like it was. Everything that I was basically looking at? Check. BUT... The metal hardware... When placed next to an actual Alice, they were clearly inferior. The frame itself looked 1/5 of the thickness of my actual pack frames... what the...? All the buckles and clips didn't look or feel "right." The draw cord was, for a lack of a better word, fluffy. Not dense like the real thing. The quick release tabs on the shoulder straps felt flimsy and weak. I'm not sure what these other reviewers are getting. Maybe I got something different as of Sept 26th, 2020. It was like having an A+ fabric, but D- everything else. I had a newer version of the USGI medium molle with the plastic frame for comparison next to it as well, and the medium molle felt noticeably heavier. I didn't weigh it with a scale or anything. Just my arm scales. But being lighter should be a good thing right? Especially for rucking? If you're an actor, sure. But if you actually use your gear, and want it to survive some bumping around? I recommend you just spend that extra $10 dollars (at the time of this review) and get the real thing. Honestly, what good is such awesome fabric etc. if you use weak thread to stitch the whole thing together? I'm not saying that the stitching is weak on this item, but you get the picture. What else did they cut corners on? Who knows. You can't skimp on something like this. Strong fabric but weak hardware is the last thing I want when out in the field. Maybe it is all in my head. Maybe everything this pack is made of is actually better because of new technology. The fabric, the frame... Maybe the frame doesn't have to be made with such thick and heavy aluminum anymore. Maybe I'm just some old veteran that isn't able to accept new advances in technology. Maybe. But for $10 more to get the genuine article? Seems like a no brainer - especially for those of us who have actually served. Because, boy... we really beat the snot out of these packs in the field, especially during basic. And not just us. The guys before us, the guys before them, and the guys after us. You get the picture. Our soldiers demand the most out of our gear while we are out in the field while giving it the least amount of maintenance. We are just too exhausted to gently place our rucks on the ground after a 3 hour, 6.2 km, trip humping 65 pounds in combat boots. Even if we are feeling fancy. So we quick release that baby onto the ground from 3 feet up. Sometimes even when our waist belts are still attached! So does every other soldier. We don't treat that gear like its our baby. We treat it like it's Government Issue! At the end of training, it goes to the next guy down the line because we couldn't break it! For every soldier (or veteran) it is like the best advertising for a product you can ever have. It is probably why old soldiers (turned civilians) will still look to military surplus when we want gear that we know have met some minimum mil-spec. Don't get me wrong. We have failures all the time. We are constantly complaining about how failure prone our G.I. is (especially the E-Tool, which is a baby sized shovel that you have to dig full sized foxholes with). But the truth of the matter? Government doesn't want to keep buying new stuff for the soldiers to break. They want that stuff to last a while. That said, this isn't a bad pack. It is definitely serviceable to some degree. A little overpriced for what it is at over $120.00. I would actually keep it to test out if it was significantly cheaper or if there was nothing else out there. But there is. The genuine article no less. I buy these items with my own pennies.
