  • Great z690 DDR5 board with a couple caveates (UPDATED - run the latest bios!)
EDIT: adding a star back because this board is fantastic. Yeah it had the ASmedia controller thing.. but whatever. Running a 14900KF with 48G CL30 6000mah {30-36-36-76) and a rtx 4090 rock stable ... lovely 8 layer PCB and looks nice... all NVME and SATA connections working perfect. Running the latest bios with all intel micro code updates had solved the issues I had with cpu voltages. I am running default intel settings with a 14900KF and it's running cooler than my 13700KF was with the old bios. Bios version 7D30v1N (still the most recent ...maybe final vers) Release date 2025-08-11 Microcode 0x129 Microcode update 0x129 addresses an issue where the processor may request high voltages, potentially leading to accelerated degradation. Microcode 0x12B Microcode update 0x12B addresses elevated voltage requests by the processor during idle and/or light activity periods (includes 0x129). Microcode 0x12F Microcode update 0x12F to further address processor degradation on systems with light activity. As said, my 14900KF at stock intel settings with this new bios and micro code updates is maxing out at 82c stress testing / 50ish while gaming. Cooler is a Corsair Titan 280 .. All systems are go and super happy with this board! ******** original post I finally upgraded from Z270 to this board so I could run 13th (and 14th...) gen CPUs with DDR5 memory. Upgrading the bios without a display - just follow the directions and it works fine. I would stick to using small flash drives like 2G or 8G.. My system is up stable and running the following: MSI Z690 Carbon wifi (bios 7D30v1A) Intel 13700Kf (voltage locked at 1.3 and speed at max turbo freq 5300 all cores) G.Skill 32G CL30 6000 at XMP ( F5-6000J3040F16GA2-RS5K ) MSI Gaming X RTX4090 Thermaltake 1250w DPS-G digital platinum psu Anyways.. the system came up just fine stable as all heck but caveats: 1) The default voltage settings in the BIOS were throwing so much voltage at the CPU it was hitting 100C fast during stress testing and throttling back fast... I have this under a Corsair H115i extreme with push pull so it should not be doing this. I locked the voltage in at 1.3 in the bios and set the frequency so it would just run at max turbo all the time .. I know this uses more power but I hate when the frequency jumps around.. idk. Just OCD like that. So now I max out at 90c (which is still high imo but well within spec) but gaming I am seeing 40s and 50s ... which I think is fine. 2) The secondary storage controller (ASMedia ASM1061) is hot trash. the ports SATA A/B on the board are this controller. I had one SATA SSD on the system and it was plugged into A.. windows had massive issues booting with controller being active at all - let alone me being able to access data across that controller. I moved the drive to SATA 5 but windows was still not happy - would hang on boot etc etc.. I finally read some posts on Reddit that this controller needs to be deactivated in the bios and when I did that BOOM all was good.. Settings>>Advanced>>Integrated Peripherals>>External SATA Controller Mode (set to disabled) 3) The m.2 layout is plentiful which is great but you should know that: *M2_1 through M2_3 do not support SATA based m.2 drives ... they are NVME/pci only! *M2_4 through M2_5 support SATA and NVME/pci Those are the key points I wish I knew going into this so hopefully someone finds this helpful. The board is rock solid stable and crushing every game I throw at it maxed out at 4k with RT on thanks to the RTX4090... So hopefully I can go another 4 years before i need to upgrade again.. we will see. ... show more

  • Very nice board!!
Great board!! Works just fine when I was finally able to update the bios without a cpu. I’m sure it’s easily done using m-flash thru the bios but when you buy this board for the new 13th Gen (i7-13700k) it’s a major PAI! You can’t load bios or see anything and you have to use the button on the back of the board. The process is simple enough but getting it to work not so much. I could not get it to initiate it. Plug in the main 24 pin plus the two 8 pin cpus then download the latetest bios onto a usb, rename the file and so on. But the problem is/was the usb drive!! I tried 2 USB 3.0 drives (64GB) and 3 USB 2.0 drives from 256mb, 2GB, and a 8GB. Yes even reformatted to FAT32 on all of them and still didn’t work. Only got it to work after sheer desperation when I reformatted the USB drive that came with the board that holds all the drivers. I figured F it nothing to lose because I ran out of USB drives to try with. Installed the rom file onto that and it worked just fine! No idea! The mystic light is finicky on this one vs my Z390 Carbon. Dragon center wouldn’t work (motherboard wouldn’t show up, but the Gskill ram did lol) so I had to use MSI Center instead. SO IF YOURE PURCHASING FOR A 13TH GEN AND YOUR USB DRIVE DOESNT WORK TO UPDATE THE BIOS, USE THE ONE IN THE BOX!!!! LOL.. ... show more

  • Most honest Review
Bought this motherboard to replace ROG STRIX Z690-E because of issues with M.2 slots. I have used MSI products in the past and always been a fan. With this motherboard I am experiencing the same issue with M.2 slots as the ROG STRIX Z690-E. M.2 slot1-4 will not detect either one of my M.2 2280. I am in the process of contacting customer support and right off the back, it is not as easy and straight forward as you would hope. In the Live Chat tab of their support page it only links to FAQ page and MSI forum. There is no link to an actual live chat. The issue with the M.2 slot I believe is firmware related rather than hardware. ASUS did a terrible job of helping me troubleshoot so I am hoping better of MSI. I will update this review as I go further through the process. Otherwise, The motherboard is solid, well built, and very sleek. I love the RGB lighting and fit in my case very easy and nicely. Given that I get my issue resolved, I would definitely recommend this motherboard to friends and family. My personal build: CPU: Intel i9 12900k Motherboard: MSI MPG Z690 Carbon WIFI GPU: GIGABYTE RTX 3060 RAM: G.Skill Trident 32GB 6000 DDR5 PSU: Corsair RM1000x M.2: WD Blue 500GB 2280 M.2_2: Samsung 860 Evo 1TB 2280 ... show more

  • Nice board!
Why anyone would buy a much more expensive Z790 board is beyond me. This Z690 board is amazing! I had 7200MHz RAM running stable on this board with the 13700K processor along with the latest BIOS (which now supports 14th gen). Yes, you have to update the BIOS if you want to use a 13th gen or 14th gen processor. Not sure why some other reviewers are complaining about that. This board was released for 12th gen processors. You can update the BIOS on the board by using an older USB 2.0 flash drive formatted FAT32. Download the BIOS file from the MSI website and rename the file in the archive to MSI.ROM before copying it to the USB. There are videos on YouTube explaining how to do this; follow their instruction and you won’t have any problem. I had no issues updating the BIOS using the button on the rear I/O panel; worked on the first attempt. And no, most motherboards don't include paper copies of manuals anymore. You will need to download the PDF manual from the MSI website. ... show more
