  • Incredible performance, incredible heat?
One thing people need to understand about this laptop is that it has been TDP upped out of the factory. What this means is that its power limits are set well above Intel's specs. For the Intel i7-10750H the recommended TDP is 45 watts which is typically what PL1 should be set to out of the box, but ultimately it's up to the laptop manufacturers' discretion. In particular, PL1 is set at 65 watts and PL2 is set at 135 watts for ALL models of the GS66 Stealth. The reason why this is good is that it means you can run the laptop at much higher sustained all-core clock speeds. By comparison, the previous year's Razer Blade Advanced 15, and more than likely this year as well, have PL1 capped to 45 watts at its highest performance setting. Workarounds to unlock the power limits on the Razer usually require reflashing a custom bios and is somewhat risky as messing it up means it won't be covered under warranty, so you could end up with a dead laptop. The GS66 on the other hand has the power limits raised straight out of the factory, so no risky bios reflashing necessary. Great! Now with great power comes great heat, and at stock, this machine does run quite hot because of the higher TDP of 65 watts on PL1. It thermal throttles(hits 95C) out of the box when running at full load on the CPU, but this can be overcome by doing some undervolting, repasting, and playing around with the power limits and turbo frequencies. There are multiple guides out now on Reddit which you can consult. I have my turbo frequencies set at 50, 49, 48, 45, 42, 38 with an undervolt of -120 mv at my temps under full load don't exceed 85-87 C. So once you have tweaked this machine it is a beast. Also just to provide some benchmarks in Cinebench R20 with these settings the highest scores I got for multicore was 3004 and single core 484. The machine is sleek and understated, but underneath hides a powerhouse of a gaming and productivity machine. The GPU also doesn't require any tweaking out of the box. The cooling there is on point and out of the box playing games the highest my temps got for the GPU were 74-75, and this was with a fairly conservative and quiet fan curve. I use this machine for machine learning projects and gaming and it is a beautiful thing to behold. If you aren't afraid to tune your machines then this is a thin and light monster for the price and I would highly recommend it! :) UPDATE: I ended up repasting with Kryonaut and applying new thermal pads. My turbo frequencies are now set at 50, 49, 48, 45, 43, 40. With an undervolt of -110.4 mv. My temps under full load don't exceed 90 C with a sustained package power of 60 watts. Also, my new benchmarks in Cinebench R20 with these settings I got 3169 multicore and single core 484. UPDATE 2(6/30/2020): I recently ran a few more experiments with Thermalright Liquid Metal Silver King(It has the same performance as Conductonaut) on both the CPU and GPU. You can search for my comprehensive comments on Reddit, but I will briefly summarize here. Just as a disclaimer one should do their research before repasting with liquid metal. There are many ways to seal off the areas(foam dams, 33+ electrical tape or Kapton tape, and nonconductive thermal paste dams) so that there are no risks of shorting your laptop ever under regular use, but you should do a thorough research of the risks and plan out the process carefully before carrying out with the repaste. People on Notebook Review Forums are very helpful for this purpose and there are many threads discussing these things. Now back to the summary. First I will discuss the liquid metal repaste effects on the CPU and then the GPU, separately. CPU: With boost clock ratios 50, 49, 48, 46, 44, 43 and a -219.7mV Core and -110.4mV cache with PL1 at 65 watts, PL2 at 135 watts and short turbo time limit at 56 seconds. With Coolerboost turned on when running the benchmarks I am able to achieve a 3375 point Cinebench R20 Multicore score with max temps not exceeding 84C with a max CPU package power draw of 73 watts and an ambient room temp of 80F(26.7C). In a cooler room at 70F, expect temps to be below 78C with Coolerboost on and CPU package power draw of 73 watts boosting at 4.3ghz all cores. Your power draw will vary depending on your undervolts for the all core boost. But just as a helpful reminder you can undervolt the core more than the cache. It's just that the extra offset is only applied for workloads with AVX instructions. For non AVX instructions the smaller absolute value of the two offsets will be applied instead. When tested under similar conditions(Coolerboost on and same stress tests)theThermalright Liquid Metal repaste saw a reduction of 10-12C reductions in max core temps when compared to a fresh repaste with Kryonaut. Core temp differentials were also significantly improved from 10C to 5C. GPU: Because of the larger die on the GPU and the 80W power limit, there isn't enough thermal density to appreciate the effects of the liquid metal. Temps were essentially the same with Coolerboost on between the Kryonaut repaste and the Thermalright Liquid Metal repaste. Temps sat at a very cool 60-61C under full load drawing 80W using Unigine Heaven Benchmark running for 15 minutes with Aida64 running at the same time under both repastes. So essentially if you decide to repaste with liquid metal do it on the CPU only(you should get 10+C improvements in max core temps when compared to a good nonconductive thermal paste like Kryonaut) and just use a good nonconductive thermal paste on the GPU. ... show more

  • Great Performer
Honestly, this is a fantastic laptop. Now that I have had it for a while I figured I would write a quick review. Two things first for full disclosure. One, I should say that as much as I like it, I might be sending it back because there is a problem with the GPU. There is a single white dot that looks like a stuck pixel on the screen, but it always renders on whatever you set the primary screen, even when you change monitors, resolutions, etc. It only appears when the Nvidia GPU is in use though. And I do mean renders to the screen, you can even take a screen shot of it. I was hoping a driver would fix this since these super cards just came out, but no luck so far. Edit for #1: An update finally fixed that problem and it is good to go. I am keeping it! Second, I am not a gamer. I am replacing a workstation class laptop with this machine and that is my use case, so I don't know a lot about the gaming performance since I don't do much in the way of games. The stock drive IO I tested with crystal disk and finished at upper middle tier speeds (2450/1900) and has been problem free. I was hesitant to go back to a 1080 screen, but honestly this screen is fantastic. It's very responsive and color accurate. I really can't say enough about how awesome this screen is and if this is your hangup just do it. The wifi is fast and the ethernet didn't give me problems when I moved multiple TB across it in a single action. The webcam is mediocre, but that is a standard on laptops for some reason. The battery is pretty good too as long as you don't use the nvidia gpu. I got about 4-5 hours of misc desk work, but just short of two hours with solidworks as I fully expected. I am using the studio drivers, not the gaming drivers. The keyboard leaves something to be desired. I had no idea how spoiled I had become with my lenovo workstation keyboard. It's not bad per say, but I am not a gamer so my requirements are a little different. Edit #2: The keyboard has really grown on me and while still not as good as the lenovo, it's pretty decent when you get used to it. Temps are a little high at idle IMO, but stay stable and well within specs when pushed. If the nvidia gpu is engaged the CPU will idle at around 65c with just a windows desktop. CPU runs about 48c idle with the intel igpu which still seems high to me. I will probably re-paste the cpu and gpu if I end up not returning it. Edit #3: I picked up some Carbonaut thermal pads off amazon and my temps are much lower. about 39c idle with intel igpu and around 52 with nvidia cpu, never hits thermal throttle at max load even with hour+ compute load. All in all, this is a great machine. It gives you that really solid and dense feel when you hold it. I love the stealth look to it. I don't have to be the guy that plops down a glowing alienware on a conference table for a meeting. ... show more

  • Great laptop. A little bummed when arrived.
Ordered this laptop for work. Came from Mobile Advance. Paid $80 for expedited shipping. It came in the same date as if I went with he free shipping option. When I received it i was bummed to discover it was used. No where when buying it did it say anything about it being used. It was supposed to be new. Even looking at order details showed nothing about being used. Every time I buy something I make sure to check for this. It was slightly dinged up on the side nothing too bad. The seller broke the factory seal and looks like the damage came from someone trying to open it up. Was very close to sending it back due to it being preowned. I was worried about the factory warranty and if I were to send it back a “new” one would be $350 more. Contacted seller and MSI (both quick to respond) about the factory seal and voiding of warranty, both said it was still covered and if I want I can return for full refund. It was only opened to make sure everything was working. I ended up opening it myself and everything looked good. Overall I really like the laptop. Only issue I have is the fans are super loud. If using for work, video calls are terrible because the mic picks up the whine of the fans and it sounds like a space ship taking off. ... show more
