  • Easy to install assuming everything else is in place and works great!
Style: Smart 18K BTUs Pattern: Split System
We have an older house that didn't have HVAC in my office which is 15x27, but also not well insulated. We had been using a window A/C unit for the summer which worked OK, but in the winter I was running 3 heaters to try to keep it above 60 degrees. We had a mini-split professionally installed in another part of our house and it was amazing, but I didn't want to spend $5k-$7k on another one and heard good things about these units. Shipping was quick but did require a specialized delivery that was easy. It came in two boxes - the compressor for outside, and the head unit for inside. The concept is simple - drill a hole from where your inside unit mounts to the outside, run the connection lines through the hole to the compressor, and connect everything up with the precharged lines. I would highly recommend going to YouTube and watching some of the videos people have going into a little more depth about the process, but it really is about as simple as that. A couple of things worth pointing out. 1) Most of the videos skip over the need to already have 220v electrical running to the unit. I installed a new 20A breaker and ran 12/2 wiring from the breaker through conduits to a non-fused A/C cutoff switch, and then ran a 12/2 whip from the cutoff to the unit. For most people I'd highly recommend just having an electrician run those for you so it's ready to go 2) You have to drill a hole from inside to outside. It needs to be around 3.5" in diameter. That's fine if you have a wood frame siding. Ours is brick. I don't care what the videos say, if you have a brick house go rent a core driller. I used a 4" x 17" core driller I rented for $200 from Home Depot and it took me about an hour to cut the hole (keeping it watered and going slowly to avoid burning out the bit or the drill). It made a night and day difference. 3) You'll either need a ground pad or mounting brackets for the compressor. I picked up a ground pad from a local HVAC supply warehouse for around $40 and mounted the compressor to it. 4) Make sure you are reading the right manual. They sent both the multi-zone and single-zone manuals with our unit. There's not a lot of difference, but if this is your first time doing this, the single-zone is going to keep you focused on the right things 5) Finally - *read the manual thoroughly before starting*. You only get one shot with the precharged lines, so make sure you understand the process and the routing. It's not difficult, but you don't want to get it wrong. I used a spray bottle with dish soap and water as my leak checker Only other thing worth pointing out - DIY doesn't mean not needing permits or inspections. You'll want to potentially check your local jurisdiction to find out if you need permits for any of this. All in all super happy - it's quiet, keeps the office a perfect temperature and was easy to install. Would definitely recommend! ... show more

  • Works great!! Had a little trouble installing it
Style: Smart 12K BTUs Pattern: Split System
Ordered the Mr. Cool DIY 12,000 BTU Mini-Split AC in March. I wanted to put it in my garage so I could work out there in the summer and also in the winter. I did a lot research before I ordered this. It seemed to be fairly easy to install if you are an average DIYer. I was able to schedule a 4 hour timeframe for delivery of the unit. About two days after I ordered it I got a notification from Amazon that they had attempted to deliver the unit and that no one was home and that the order was canceled. First off I was not supposed to get the AC for another week. Second thing I was home the whole day they supposedly tried to deliver it. Well I had to contact Amazon to verify twice that indeed the order was not canceled and I would get my AC on the delivery day. I took the day off from work just to make sure someone was home on delivery day. The day of delivery I was called by the shipping company that they had to reschedule. They wanted to deliver the next day but I could not take off. So I had to wait another week to get my AC. I finally get my AC it came in three boxes even though I was told it was two. Apparently the line set that connects the air handler (inside unit) to the compressor (outside unit) is not included in the box for the compressor. So if you order this make sure you get everything. In some install videos I watched the unit came in two boxes mine did not and there was some confusion by the delivery guys as to whether I was supposed to get the third box. I did open the boxes to verify all the parts were there. Again in some install videos the person who did the install got a tool bag with most of the tools needed to install the AC. Mine did not come with this perk. Because of bad weather and other issues I had to wait about a month before I could try and install the AC. The wall bracket for the inside unit was very easy to mount just use the template that is provided for it and make sure it is level. Also make sure you have proper clearance abound the air handler and you must mount it to the studs in the wall because it is a little heavy. One problem I had was the hole I needed to make for the line set. The kit has a plastic tube that after you drill the 3 1/2 inch hole in the wall you feed the line set that is attached to the air handler. Well the tube was two inches too short. Apparently my wall was too thick. I tried to contact the manufacturer naturally this was on a Saturday and they were closed for the weekend. So I 3D printed my own tube. After I got that problem solved I had to run the 26 foot line set from where I hung it to my backyard. I had purchased a line set cover for this purpose and the one I ordered was too small. It was 3 1/2 inch diameter I should have ordered the 4 1/2 inch diameter. I had to wait another week to put up the line set waiting for the new cover to get delivered. So order the larger line set cover if you need one it will save you a bunch of frustration. I had decided to mount the compressor on the wall so I got a wall mount kit. This went up with no problems. I had someone run my electrical. They installed a quick disconnect for servicing the unit and ran the 120 volt line to my breaker box. After we connected power and did a test we noticed a ground wire had come loose so we pulled the quick disconnect and re check all the wiring. We reconnected it and the compressor would not run. After about an hour of trying to figure out what was wrong I finally looked at the troubleshooting guide and discovered that if there is a sudden power loss the compressor will restart after 3 minutes. READ THE MANUAL it will save you a lot of time! It is working so well I have to set the temp to 81 degrees because it gets cold in my garage. It is also very very quite. I have to stand next to the compressor to tell if it is running or not. I give the order process 2 stars because of all the mix-ups and miscommunication. I give the install process 3 stars because it is not as easy as it seems in the install videos I give the AC itself 5 stars it works much better than expected I hope it lasts for many years! ... show more

  • SO GLAD WE PURCHASED
Style: Smart 18K BTUs Pattern: Split System
We absolutely love this mini split. We installed it in the garage because my husband cuts hair at home and I have a home gym. The AC and heating elements work perfectly. We used to have an evaporative cooler that did nothing but make it humid as hell during the hot summer months. If you’re thinking of buying this, highly recommend. We DID NOT install ourselves, it doesn’t seem as DIY friendly if you literally have no idea what you’re doing. Luckily our family has an HVAC in the family so he did it. Maybe you are able to figure it out to install but we didn’t want to chance it and potentially mess up with a $1900 purchase. ... show more
