We replaced the engine on an old tractor, and the replacement engine did not have a tach drive on it. So, we got this one, which works by connecting to the alternator. The alternator already had the 3rd terminal on it, so all we had to do, was make the connections. One wire to power, one to ground, and a signal wire to the 3rd spade on the alternator. The directions were a little sketchy, but were good enough to get it hooked up. Included in the box, is a little tool you use to calibrate the gauge. This leads to my only real quibble with the tach. Calibration is straight forward, but the calibration adjustment is very touchy. It took me a few tries to get it just right because it was easy to overshoot the proper setting because the tiniest bit of movement made a big difference in the displayed RPMs. However, once I got it properly calibrated, it works very, very smoothly, and so far, has stayed in calibration. ... show more

Used in my backhoe. The adjustable frequency is just what I needed. Use a laser tach to get the actual RPM then use this tach’s adjustment to read the same.

well the instructions just say connect the signal wire to "W" on the alternator.... wtf is W? iv tried connecting the signal wire to every terminal on the alt, and it never does anything.... so its either junk or useless. Either its needs more hardware or more instructions
