Features

  • As the title indicates, this guitar amplifier features a 5-watt tube power amplifier and a Celestion brand speaker.
  • It uses a ECC83/12AX7 preamplification tube and a 6V6GT power tube for the amplifier section, plus a Celestion Super 8 GBA-15 speaker.
  • The amplifier handles frequencies between 80Hz and 10kHz, with hum and noise -75dB below the rated power and 0.5% total harmonic distortion.
  • It includes a low input and a high input, with the former attenuating the signal by approximately 50% and the latter being easier to overdrive.
  • While tone is always debatable, the increased dynamic range and even-order harmonic distortion of tubes produces the better sound.

Description

Get superior guitar tone in a small package using this 5-Watt 1x8 guitar combo tube amplifier with Celestion Speaker from Monoprice! The celestion super 8 is detailed and crisp. Well-balanced mids and highs complement a surprisingly meaty bottom end. It's just about the biggest sounding eight-inch speaker we've ever heard. Give it about 20 hours of playing time and it really warms up for a smooth, buttery sound that still punches through the mix. It has a Low input, which attenuates the signal by about half and makes it easier to overdrive, and a high input, which gives full power with more headroom and volume. The cabinet has an open back and features a leather handle, cloth speaker grill, and a cream-colored, textured, synthetic leather exterior with chrome corner guards.

  • What a smokin' deal! What a smokin' deal!
Style: Amplifier
I had been sitting on the fence about this amp for nearly 8 months now, reading every review, both positive and negative, humming and hawing, looking at the Fender 57' Champ, back and forth...well I pulled the trigger! Thanks to the review that mentioned missing out on this little guy would be a tragedy. Arrived within 24hrs. No dents in the boxes was well packaged protected within a box-in-a-box with 1" foam corners. It's super sturdy, heavy (top heavy), and built well. Same model/build as pictured. Power cable is indeed attached, and has a velcro strap attached to the inside to keep the plug cable wrapped up. 2 tubes, open back, w/ a heat vent thingie that looks cool. Overall it is really vintage looking IMO. Compared to my Fender Mustang 1v2, this thing is better-built hands down. Has chrome hardware and rubber feet. Tolex is a light cream and well applied. I see no flaws in the tolex application. There was some stringy glue inside the back of the amp, that just pulled off the inside/front. Looks like it was leftover from the inside is not bare wood, but has a black tolex-like material applied to the speaker front and sides/back which was a surprise. I expected bare MDF board inside...nope. Attention to detail IMO. The handle feels weird but looks good and vintage. The instruction booklet is good and explains how to use the tube amp. Read it! Plugin guitars BEFORE turning it on, and allow to warm up for 10-15min. I did all this and so far no major meltdowns. It sounds really, really clean on the 1w setting with no gain. Love it! I can adjust my guitar via the volume/tone/switch now. Never seemed like they did much thru my solid-state, but so with the tube. Pretty amazeballs IMO. Love the 1w setting for practice and getting the tone dialed in. So much fun and warmer than my solid-state hands down. In 5w this thing gets LOUD! I noticed the tone control can introduce some hum, but nothing freakishly annoying, but at that 5w say set at 5 volume, this amp is too loud for my apartment building (I live in SF). Would be interesting to try an 8ohm speaker out, which may be my next project. Overall I think this thing is pretty awesome. Like anything on the internet folks got lots of opinions, but I would not hesitate to jump on one of these cool tube amps before they are gone. I got the extended warranty for $20 for 3 years thru Asurion. $151.86 for a tube amp with this build quality? Insane. Sure if you are a gear snob, pay 10x the price for a Fender Champ 57' but my bet is it wouldn't be 10x better, maybe 2x? I dunno. If you have never used a tube amp, I highly recommend giving this a shot. ... show more

  • Killer Little Tube Amp That Will Really Surprise You!!!
Style: Amplifier
I've been looking for a low watt practice amp that was inexpensive and "all tube", not a hybrid or solid state junk box. The idea was to run my pedalboard thru it to get tones set on all my effects to give me a good idea of what things would sound like when I'm out preforming live with my much larger and louder 30 watt tube amp. After quite a bit of searching, listening to demos, and reading reviews I kept coming back to this little Monoprice 5 watt tube amp. I found a sale price here and grabbed it thinking that If I didn't like it I could easily sell it for what I paid. Fast forward to now and I can honestly say I think this is the best bargain on a low powered small tube amp out there right now! I thought I'd be using it at 5 watts but it was a lot louder than I expected it to be so having the option to run it at 1 watt (still a lot louder than I thought it would be!) was ideal for my next door neighbors who don't appreciate screaming electric guitar power chords and guitar solos after dinnertime the same way I do! Playing clean thru this amp my guitars sound warm and full of sparkle and cranked up it just breaks up in the best way! Sweet sustaining notes and thundering chords just fall out of this thing!!! Kicking on pedals its even better! If you've been looking around and are on the fence about grabbing this Monoprice 5 watt amp trust me I've been there. No regrets here, in fact at the 5 watt setting its easily loud enough to take it with me to rehearsal with Bass Player and Drummer and if I need more thump I can run it thru a 1x12 speaker cab via the "external speaker out" on the back of the amp. How cool is that? Don't know about how it will hold up over a few years but tubes are easy to replace and at the price this amp is a keeper! ... show more

  • Great Bedroom Amp, Fantastic after speaker upgrade!
Style: Amplifier
I plugged it in and started playing after letting the tubes warm up and it sounded ok. It has nice sounds, very bright, almost too bright, but you can turn the tone down to compensate. I suspected that it had more potential and I was 100% correct. It was obvious it could use a better speaker, which I expected for this price. After reviewing 8" speaker options I opted for the Celestion Eight 15 G8C-15 8 Ohm speaker because: 1. It was only $29 with free 2 day shipping via FedEx from ZZsounds. They even delivered on Easter Sunday! 2. The Celestion website spec's the Eight 15 speaker at 20 Watts, although ZZ's spec's showed it as 15 Watts, which is what the amp came with anyway, so even if it's only 15 Watts that is still fine, but I tend to believe the manufacturer's spec's. 3. I noticed the magnet in the Eight 15 speaker weighed over twice as much than the stock speaker. The difference in the sound was very noticeable right away. Not a little better, the difference was day and night. Now, with the new speaker it sounds wonderful and "chimey" like a fine boutique tube amp. I couldn't believe what a difference the new speaker made and definitely recommend the additional $29 for the upgrade. It's an easy upgrade to do for most any DIY'er. However, it was a real challenge, incredibly difficult, unexpectedly took a lot of effort to remove the chassis because the tolex had bonded to the chassis, maybe excess glue from the tolex? I had to carefully use a large clamp with cushions and a rubber foot to avoid marring the surfaces to apply enough pressure to get the chassis out. I couldn't believe how much pressure it took to break it away from the tolex, but I was able to work it out without damaging anything. This amp takes pedals well. I like to use a Tube Screamer type pedal to get the natural break up at lower volumes and this has worked way better than I expected. I was feeling ok with the purchase even with the stock speaker, but the incredible difference an inexpensive speaker upgrade made encouraged me to write this long winded review. I recommend the amp, with or without the speaker upgrade. ... show more

  • A cool little all-tube amp that sounds quite good.
Style: Amplifier
It has now been over three months since I bought this amp. I purchased it as both a back-up amp to my main one, and as a small, easy-to-carry tube amp to throw in the car. For the first two or three weeks, I really didn't use it much, only to break it in a bit. I mostly used my Ampeg Jet ll reissue, as it has a 12" vintage Ampeg speaker, 18 watts with both spring reverb and tremolo. But, as often happens with vintage amps, it needed servicing (some re-soldering work). It has been in the shop now several weeks so I have been using the Monoprice. I have to say, the more I use it, the more I like it. As reviewers note, this is a close approximation of the classic 1950s Fender 5 F1, with the same wattage, high and low inputs (which is really an attenuation to half-power), volume and tone controls. After some pretty steady use for a couple of weeks, the speaker has broken in well and I am pleased with the Celestion speaker. It has a nice clean sound (which I prefer, playing mostly blues-type stuff), and more bass than I expected from an 8" speaker. The amp looks nice (almost the same tolex covering as the Vox AC4 TV, which I own but which has quit outputting). It feels solid and all functions work as they should. Others note that this amp will not play loud enough for gigs, which is true. However, it is more than loud enough to create some problems with any neighbors that might be close if it is cranked up. Certainly loud enough for normal practice levels. Some reviewers have noted quality control issues, and I did as well. In my case, they were too minor to return the item; one of the screws on the side (which probably supports the speaker and magnet housing) was sticking out about a half-inch. It was evidently assembled on an assembly line, and the screw did not seat in the screw hole properly. I was, however, able to unscrew and seat correctly. There was also a bit of tolex at the top that should have been trimmed. Otherwise, it was okay. But this is why only four instead of five stars. The amp will also drive an extension speaker, either 8 ohms or 16 ohms. I have a Kustom extension cabinet with a 12" speaker, and have used the Monoprice to drive it. While it does provide more bottom-end, I actually find I prefer the 8" Celestion. Perhaps because it is a better speaker than the generic one in the Kustom, it seems 'tighter' and cleaner compared to the extension cabinet. It is hard to tell whether this amp will experience problems in the near future. I have already noticed the LED power light will sometimes flicker when I am playing, but that could just be power fluctuations. However, I did purchase a two-year extended warranty, which covers repair or replacement and shipping. It was only $15, a prudent add-on for a new electronic product, in my opinion. I almost bought the similarly-priced Bugera, but digging into reviews shows that amp seems to have reliability issues. So far, I am very pleased with this amp and would recommend. I do note, however, that the price keeps rising since my purchase in early February. As the price creeps up to the $200 point, it becomes less of a bargain. But again, I am very pleased with this purchase and the price I paid. ... show more

  • Sounds huge though a 12' cab.
Style: Amplifier
I bought this amp basically on impluse, I have a couple Marshall amps and was just looking for something to experiment with... At first I can't say I was very happy of the sound, the 8 inch speaker just doesn't do it for me. So, I hooked it up to my 2x12 cab with a v30 and g12-H and this thing sounds disgusting (in a great way). I really like the amp with both knobs dime'd out it has some nice organic overdrive, like a more classic style tube amp. But, it cleans up if you roll of the volume. Very responsive. I still felt like there could be more so I stuck a JJ 6v6GT and a JJ 12AX7 I pulled out of a Marshall in there. This upped the overdrive a bit and smoothed out the sound. Has a nice big bottom end now. Further more stick a boost pedal in front of it, I use a Tumnus (Klon clone) with the gain set to zero just to push the front end and open up the mids....You get an incredible almost exploding overdrive, it is the essence of crunch. Great Stoner Rock/Metal or Doomy tones. Of course if you dial things back a tad you can get some great old school rock tones as well, but this thing just sounds crazy pushed to the limits imo. Warning though the amp is pretty friggin loud for a 5w, I personally put it though an attentuator (Jettenuator) so I can push the amp hard and still have it at a reasonable volume. I guess the real point here is if you have a nice assortment of toys to throw at this amp it can be a pretty cool piece of gear. Like all tube amps it just sounds better cranked! As far as build quality i'd say it's pretty exceptional for the price point. The cab is made of plywood surprisingly, there is a brace on the back made of cardboard though, but it's only there to protect the tubes. Stock tubes are nameless chineese, but they actually are pretty balanced and responsive if not slightly tame...I don't like that power cord is hardwired in and it's only about 3 feet long. Nice white tolex(ish) on the outside no real gripes there...it's made of good stuff basically. Really nice leather handle. It would be pretty cool if they would offer a head version, I think i'm probably going to end up converting mine. ... show more

  • best fender-sounding amp on amazon for this price
Style: Amplifier
I absolutely love this amp. really loud for its size, and quite bright, I usually have to keep the tone knob down when I use my Telecaster. Its easy to carry around, looks cool, and has that Fender Champ-ish American tone. Really happy with it, and at a crazy good price for a tube amp. great for bedroom practice. ... show more

  • Incredible Value! Incredible Value!
Style: Amplifier
Got it today. Brought it inside. Opened box and brought amp to room temp. Plugged in guitar. Turned on and left at high volume and 5W for 10 mins. And haven't stopped playing for the last 3 hours. This thing is insanely loud and I'll never be able to play it at high volume due to being in a condo. But I set amp volume to lowest, and added a BOSS DS-1 and a reverb pedal, and I can't put my guitar down. The clean tones are incredible. It's like my fender strat woke up! I have a 34watt Marshall solid state and that's also too loud, but a good amp. Right now it's serving as a base for the stage right! I'll def buy another if this goes out. But I also got a 3 yr warranty for $25 so I'm feeling good. Absolutely buy it if you're on the fence. Clean tones are tube amp at its finest. Distortion may need a pedal to boost depending on your vol and pickups. What a steal! ... show more

  • It doesn’t have two tubes as advertised
Style: Amplifier
Well built amp, but there’s only one problem. All of the ones in the advertisement had a preamp tube and a power tube. This one does not have a preamp tube, it only has a power tube, and you have to crank it super loud to get any overdrive I got it for $100 so it’s worth keeping because it sounds great and it takes pedals well but it’s kind of false advertising. Still a great amp and I’m going to keep it, but it definitely doesn’t sound like the ones with a tube preamp ... show more
