The rifle optic market is currently more crowded than ever. From entry-level glass to "cost-as-much-as-your-car" setups, it can be overwhelming to find a middle ground. Into this fray steps the Monstrum Beast 4-12x44, an optic that knows exactly what it is: a high-value, budget-friendly contender that punches well above its price tag. Where Monstrum Fits In To be clear, we are not comparing this to a $2,000 NightForce or a high-end Vortex Razor. I realize the clientelle for those brands would turn up their nose at this optic that coats less than their bubble level. If you are expecting world-class edge-to-edge clarity and indestructible combat-ready housing, you are looking in the wrong price bracket. However, if you are looking for a reliable, feature-rich optic for a range plinker or a hunting setup without breaking the bank, Monstrum has carved out a very impressive niche. Features & Performance The "Beast" series comes with several features usually reserved for more expensive glass: Side Focus: This is a standout at this price point, allowing for quick parallax adjustment without reaching all the way to the objective lens. Included Offset Mount: The fact that it ships with a functional, sturdy offset scope mount adds even more to the value proposition. Illuminated Reticle: Great for low-light conditions or busy backgrounds. The Second Focal Plane (SFP) Factor This scope is a Second Focal Plane optic. The Pros: The reticle stays the same size regardless of your magnification level. I recently mounted the Monstrum Beast on my AR-15 to move beyond my standard flip-up sights. The reversibility of the included ring mount was necessary to get the eyepiece at the appropriate distance for my eye relief, which allowed me to work around the two separate sections of my Picatinny rail. I only needed the included hex wrench to get everything secured. Although the scope adds some weight to the rifle, it does not significantly affect the balance when I shoulder it. The glass is clear, and I was pleased to see no fogging while testing in below-freezing temperatures. At about 8x magnification, I began to notice some vignetting where the edges of the image start to go dark, which becomes more pronounced at the full 12x zoom. The illuminated fiber optic reticle is clear, and during my testing under gray skies, the lowest of the seven brightness settings was perfect for maintaining a sharp point of aim. It is worth noting that the reticle does not turn off automatically. There is an off position between each brightness level on the dial, so you have to remember to turn it off yourself or you will kill the battery. I found the windage and elevation adjustments to be fairly firm with tactile and audible clicks. Zeroing was simple; after I had the adjustments set, I used a penny to unscrew the cap, reset the turret to zero, and screwed it back in. My club's range is fixed at 100 yards, so while I only had to set the parallax once, having a side focus dial is a high-end feature that I appreciate having for future flexibility. This is a great value for a scope that provides precise 1/4 MOA increments and locking turrets that you pull to adjust. I plan to keep my flip-up fixed sights on the rifle, although I will be moving them to a 45-degree mount to complement this new setup.

Update - The Beast has a new semi-permanent home on an old Marlin 980 .22WMR. For long term use, this seems like a good pairing. With about 500 rounds, the zero stayed true when mounted on a .556, but the weight of this scope finds better balance on the Marlin. The Beast seems like a good fit for a varmint rifle and made a good upgrade for the original 2x from the 60's that finally failed. This is a tough review because things that are good on the Beast tend to be very good, and where it fails, it fails in a big way. I give this 4 stars as an extreme budget optic as it is, this is not an indication of how it would rank against optics way out of its class. TLDR version - rugged, great eye-relief, terrible eye-box, bad tracking, great illumination on the fiber optic dot, heavy, good glass - a solid "starter" magnified optic for newer shooters that are figuring out what they really want. Long version - The Beast is a large optic and heavier than the Swampfox Patriot (which is a decent budget comparison) although the Monstrum is 1/3 the cost. I was surprised to find that the glass clarity is slightly better with the Beast compared to the Patriot with little chromatic aberration on a bright sunny day. For a budget scope, the glass is a homerun. The parallax adjustment is smooth and works well (tested against known distances 25 yards to 330 yards). The locking turrets for windage and elevation are smooth but the clicks are soft for both tactile and hearing, you'll have to pay attention while dialing. That brings us to tracking and on a box test of 20 clicks per side at 50 yards, the reticle showed a slight drift and did not return to the starting position. While this may not matter to newer shooters or shorter range targets, if you are dialing for elevation and wind, you are going to end up with a shift in zero. Now, I'm testing this on a 5.56 where I don't plan on doing much dialing, so I can mitigate the drift issue, but if you were trying to use this for anything serious, it is going to come into play. The Beast did zero quickly but time well tell how well it holds. Let's talk eye relief and eye-box. I was pleasantly surprised by the generous eye relief on this optic - easily 3.5" at 4x and still close to 3" at 12x; that was impressive. The eye box, however, is tight and unforgiving so if you are not perfectly aligned, your sight picture is almost immediately occluded. When discussing the reticle, I got the FIB01 which is the most basic of the options. The reticle is clear although a bit thick for my taste, but the fiber optic dot illumination is really good. Because of the tracking issue, I think the other reticles which allow for better hold-over/windage compensation but the FIB01 is good for faster but less precise targeting. Of course, this is a second focal plane optic, so the reticule is the same size regardless of the level of magnification, that does mean your holds are only going to be true at the magnification level used when zeroing. While I prefer first focal plane on any optic above 6 or 8x, this is still just a budget optic and I'm not going to hammer on something that tends to be more personal preference when talking about casual use. So, at the end of the day, this is not meant for "duty" or competition use and cannot be judged against those types of optics. This is not "just as good" as Razors, PLC's, or ATACRS, but that's not what it is trying to do. I think this is good enough for some plinking and chasing varmints. I also think this is good for new shooters that want to experiment with magnified optics without dumping a lot of money while trying to figure out what you really want in an optic. Monstrum has done it again! Another top product that can be used by most shooters that offers functionality, good looks and usefulness for a great price. This scope is manufactured to give many years of service, looks great, and can be mounted for hunting as well as tactical service. It has lots of nice features desired by shooters. This scope has easy to adjust turrets for bith windage and elevation. Pull the knob out to make adjustments and push back in to lock them in. You can adjust your image clarity using the inner ring on the left turret for ease. This is side focus dial, and very easy to use. The optics are very clear, quality glass for sure. The outer ring of the left turret activates a red dot and intensity desired, from low to super bright and is co-witnessed with your reticle. 10 brightness levels, using a common CR2032 battery. This scope has adjustable magnification, 4 x 12 magnification at the near end of the scope. Typical eye relief on this scope is 4 inches. This scope even comes with its own cantilever mount with three slots where it mounts on your rail for sturdiness. That's a great option to get as part of your purchase. And last but not least is the Monstrum Lifetime Guarantee. I have several Monstrum products, and all of them are awesome. This is a super deal, a great value for the money for what you will receive. This scope is called "The BEAST" for a reason!

A high value scope at a budget price! I've never quite graduated from standard scopes circa 1970's, and this quality optic has me re-learning the trade! That fiber optic reticle offers pin-dot accuracy with amazingly easy adjustment, that holds it zero very nicely. I'm amazed at the quality and bargain price - Recommended!
