Scarlet Fever: A Disease from the Past, Claws its Way to the Present While not one of the most lethal of diseases afflicting the world, Scarlet Fever holds a sinister place in the pantheon of plagues for its preference of striking down children. Though possibly mentioned as far back as Hippocrates in 400 BC, scarlet fever came into its own in America during the 1800s and early 1900s. It was quite common during that time, killing almost 5 percent of those contracting it, and 36,000 died in England and Wales alone during the first decade of the 20th century. Its complications often affected the kidneys, joints, or turned into a rheumatic fever, which often causes heart damage. People who read Louisa May Alcott's children's novel "Little Women" may recall the tragic death of Beth March, who succumbed to scarlet fever — a fate she shared with Alcott's real-life sister, Elizabeth. The discovery of penicillin almost eradicated the disease in the 20th century. Scarlet fever, also known as Scarlatina, is caused by a bacterium, Group A streptococcus bacteria, Streptococcus Pyogenes, which is the most common source of "strep throat." Scarlet fever symptoms usually include a red rash, a "strawberry tongue, sore throat, fever, and swollen glands. The disease spreads via respiratory droplets mostly produced during coughing and sneezing. Starting with a few Singapore cases in 2006, the disease moved throughout Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong, and China. Authorities became alarmed as it spread to England, Wales, and the United States. Between 1999 and 2013, there were about 3 to 8 cases of scarlet fever per 100,000 people in the United Kingdom. However, starting in 2014, the instances climbed to 1,075 cases reported in one week, with 15,637 reported cases over the year, making a rate of infection 27 per 100,000 – three times the previous year's. In 2015 the ratio reached 31 per 100,000; rising again, 2016 had 19,206 cases, for 33 out of 100,000, the highest recorded number seen since 1967. Earlier this month, two University of Queensland professors from the University of Queensland released a new report detailing this dreaded killer's return. In it, they determined that "supercharged "clones" of the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes are to blame for the resurgence of the disease, which has caused high death rates for centuries." Team lead, UQ Professor Dr. Stephan Brouwer, said: "This global re-emergence of scarlet fever has caused a more than five-fold increase in disease rate and more than 600,000 cases around the world." According to co-author Professor Mark Walker: "The toxins would have been transferred into the bacterium when it became infected by viruses that carried the toxin genes." Walked continued: "We've shown that these acquired toxins allow Streptococcus pyogenes to better colonize its host, which likely allows it to out-compete other strains. These supercharged bacterial clones have been causing our modern scarlet fever outbreaks. The research team then removed the toxin genes from the clones causing scarlet fever, and these modified 'knock-out' clones were found to be less able to colonize in an animal model of infection." Walker also stated that this new strain of Scarlet fever has remained in check so far because of the public health policy measures introduced to control COVID-19: "This year COVID-19 social distancing has kept scarlet fever outbreaks in check for now, and the disease's main target – children – have been at school less and also spending far less time in other large groups. But when social distancing eventually is relaxed, scarlet fever is likely to come back. We need to continue this research to improve diagnosis and to manage these epidemics better. Just like COVID-19, ultimately, a vaccine will be critical for eradicating scarlet fever – one of history's most pervasive and deadly childhood diseases." Several points of the article should concern us. First, modern medicine's illusion of conquering diseases and viruses is falling apart as the old plagues often return, in treatment-resistant forms. While modern medicine has dramatically reduced old-time epidemics, many were already in decline before the rise of vaccines and the Pharma-State because of increased sanitation and personal hygiene. By focusing on a "vaccine," and the lock-down conditions many are experiencing today, the doctors are pushing the Pharma-State goals of profits and control, and they fail to consider other factors such as proper nutrition and staying fit. Probably the most concerning statement in the report is: "The research team then removed the toxin genes from the clones causing scarlet fever, and these modified 'knock-out' clones were found to be less able to colonize in an animal model of infection." Do we want the same people that label a pre-born baby a "fetus" to justify aborting it, manipulating the very foundation of life? Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could; they didn't stop to think if they should. Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park I just got these this morning, so I cannot tell you how they are long term or how my succulents will react to them, but I can tell you I have never had an easier time putting up a light nor been as impressed with the brightness of a unit. I replaced an old fluorescent 2-4' bulb unit, so I had the wires to attach this new unit already in place but, in less than 5-minutes, I had this baby out of the box and onto its new home. Easy does not do it justice, and the brightness is nuts. You have the option of running one or both of the lights, and by running just one bulb, it delivers more light to my plants than my old unit did with two. I can't wait to see how these guys work in the long term. As the Monkeys used to say, "I’m a believer!” ... show more

  • Great lights for the price
Color: Warm White Size: 2FT
I bought these lights for my Ikea Milsbo plant cabinet hack at the recommendation of several blogs and they work well. I still need to hide the cords, but they produce a good light and were easy to hang with the included clips and some magnet hooks. The lights have two bars that can be controlled separately. They come with cords to chain them as well, which was nice to be able to control both sets of lights with a single smart plug. They do not have an automatic timer which is nice, because I wanted to control it at specific times of the day rather than a set length of time everyday. ... show more

  • It worked fine for starting seedlings
Color: Pink Size: 2FT version
This was my first try at starting garden plants. I was told the pinkish light was a good choice. It worked fine for me. I ordered a longer one later as well for next year.

  • Very Basic But Gets The Job Done
Color: Warm White Size: 2FT
Likes: - very inexpensive - easy setup - individual bulb switches (both bulbs can be on or just one of preferred) - removable light deflectors - ability to daisy chain Dislikes: - feels somewhat fragile - power cables are intrusive - length of cord between switches and connection to lamp is shorter than preferred Overall: You get what you pay for, but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a great starter lamp for seedlings and recent transplants to prevent an abundance of shock from a more powerful light. While I don’t really find much use in pass-through daisy chaining the lights, having the option available is nice. Also, bulbs are included, which many T5 light products don’t. ... show more

  • Produces good light, easy to install
Color: Warm White Size: 4FT
I purchased 3 of these last week and installed them this weekend. They are lightweight so easy to lift and easy to install using the cables and fittings supplied with the lights. The Monios-L T5 LED Grow Light, 4FT Full Spectrum Sunlight Replacement produce a good amount of light giving good lighting to the plants. They are simple easy to install with all the hardware needed to do the install. They come with cables that allows you to string multiple lights together. Being very light weight they are easy to lift and hold over your head while attaching the cable to the ceiling. The only issue was the one of the On/Off switches is stuck in the on position, now unable to turn the light Off. The switches are double switches and one of the 2 together will not switch Off. Also the vendor provides caps for the end of the lights if not stringing the lights together. 2 of the lights came with the end caps in the packages, one light did not. I do not see a way to provide the manufacturer feed back about the product so I am including the comments here in a review of otherwise appears to be a good product that I would buy again. ... show more

  • Good for starting plants
Color: Pink Size: 4FT version
Used it to start seeds for garden and geranium. First picture was the 75 cent geranium starters in 2 inch container and planting on seeds. Two weeks later seeds are growing fast. Squash is putting out second set of leaves with strong root growth. Geranium have put on 2-3 inch growth and are filling out. Only problem is its snowing and freezing at night in the Pacific northwest in the middle of April, so I will have to wait a while to move them outside. With a luminous Angle of 120 degrees, I found more growth in the center. The exposure area is 6" high 1.7 feet, 8" high 2.6ft 256 par value , 12" high 2.5 ft par value 196, 15" high 4.3ft , 18" high 5.2ft par value 112. Started at 8" and have move up to 12". Note the third picture is the violet color the light puts out and the room color. ... show more
