The Smart Water Shutoff is a smart home water security system that provides 24/7 protection by monitoring for water leaks—some as small as one drop of water per minute—and other vulnerabilities, no additional sensors needed. Designed by plumbing and tech industry professionals, Flo by Moen Smart Water Shutoff is installed on the main water supply line of the home. Through the Flo by Moen App you can see live water use, including water flow rates, pressure and even temperature. If the Smart Water Shutoff detects an issue (e.g. high pressure, freezing water, or a small leak) it will alert you through the Flo by Moen App, or other preferred notification methods, so you can assess the issue before it causes costly damage. If there is a catastrophic failure, like a burst pipe or someone leaves the water running, you will be alerted in the App allowing you to shut the water off remotely—no matter where you are. If you fail to respond to the alert or are on vacation, the device can be set to automatically shut off water to help limit damage and loss. Combine the Smart Water Detector with the Flo by Moen Smart Water Shutoff for whole-home protection. This Smart Water Detector can be placed anywhere in your home where water leaks and moisture could be a problem from environmental factors or fixture malfunctions, such as the basement or laundry room, to provide 24/7 protection. This is a great concept but it’s executed poorly. When it worked, it was great and really gave me peace of mind. It even saved me a major headache when my water pressure was inexplicably rising beyond normal measures (faulty PRV valve). That said, it has so many issues that it’s not worth it. After 12 months of owning my first smart shutoff unit, the impeller crapped out. Customer service said I needed to replace the entire thing since that’s not a part you can just buy. They offered to replace it for free since the issue happened during the warranty period. When the replacement came, it lasted a few months before dying completely. Somehow water broke through a seal and flooded the power cord bank, which is a major hazard since water and electricity don’t go together. When I called customer service about it, I was told the unit is out of warranty (they go off the original purchase date, the warranty doesn’t reset with a new unit) so they wouldn’t send a replacement. I was told I needed to either buy a new unit (+$1000) or consider getting their extended warranty in the future, which is a scam in itself at $5/month. Either way, I’d be dishing out money because they sent me a unit that lasted only 6 months. If you want a smart shutoff unit that craps out every 6-12 months or you just love throwing away money, buy this thing. ... show more

    • Premature Failure + Weak Warranty = Not Worth It

I installed the Moen smart water shutoff valve about 2–3 years ago expecting long-term reliability. After all, this is fundamentally a water valve—something that traditionally lasts decades. Out of nowhere, the system started reporting zero flow, even though water is clearly running. I contacted Moen support, and to their credit, they acknowledged a common issue and sent a replacement turbine sensor. I installed it, but the problem persisted. After additional troubleshooting with support, they were unable to resolve the issue and ultimately told me the unit is out of warranty (only 1 year)—so my only option is to buy a completely new system. That’s unacceptable. Let’s be clear: This is not normal wear and tear. This is not a consumable product. A water shutoff valve should not become e-waste after 2-3 years. What’s especially disappointing is that the failure appears tied to sensor/electronics reliability, not the core plumbing hardware. So instead of a durable, long-term solution, you’re effectively buying into a short lifecycle tech product—with no meaningful support after year one. Bottom line: Great idea in theory, but poor durability and a weak warranty make this a risky investment.     • This has saved us multiple times in just a year

I installed this after we had the lower heating element blow out of a hot water heater and partially flood our house. On multiple occasions this has detected problems that would have otherwise gone undetected. Most recently it detected a toilet in a matter of minutes that was running continuously in a bathroom we rarely use where it would've run for at least a few days at something like 2 gallons/minute before we would've noticed. That would've been an entire month of water in a few days. The intelligence is a bit surprising-- it somehow has figured out what is normal usage for us and what isn't and so far has been fairly accurate on spotting unusual usage (and shutting off the water if we don't acknowledge it). Another plus--- the water usage counters. It's nice being able to match it up to the water bills (so far it's been very accurate and within 5% of our water bill) and I suspect it would catch a failed water meter that was overcharging which seems to be a growing issue people are having. ... show more
