  • BEST CAKE I’VE EVER MADE
I saw the viral rice cooker cake video from Kat’s IG, and had to buy this cookbook ASAP! I made the Asian bakery chiffon cake and the first time it ended up tasting bad, like eggs and baking powder. The egg yolks sunk to the bottom, you could visibly see it green. I realized that I didn’t mix the egg yolk mixture enough, so I remade the recipe, being extra careful, and it turned out better than I could imagine. It was sooo fluffy and light, and not too sweet. Like Kat’s blog suggested, I did one “mixed” then one “harder” cook on the rice cooker, and it was perfectly cooked. I didn’t have gelatin for the whipped cream but it didn’t affect anything since we ate it the same day. My Asian family loved the cake and I’m so excited to try more recipes! ... show more

  • We love AANHPI representation in our books, especially in food
I'm certain I'm not the only person who wants to embark upon an SAB quest to recreate every single recipe in here. I've been following the author's journey on Instagram for a while and eventually joined the Facebook group as well. The community itself is amazing! I want to make this clear as well: as someone who does identify with being Asian-American, it's weirdly difficult to find even RECIPE books made by people of color. It's honestly bizarre to pick up Asian cookbooks written by people who have adopted the food (which isn't a problem, per se) rather than growing up with it and transforming it (a perspective we simply don't have enough of). It's easy for a non-POC to say something is "authentic"; but it's completely different when someone who IS a POC can say, "This is what my mother used to make," and that's a different authenticity in itself. It's a point of pride to be able to share one's culture through food, which is exactly what a lot of us do when we bring goodies to a potluck. And the book? Gorgeous. The recipes look easy to follow and they read like a friend is telling you what to do next. Plus, all of the photos are just CHEF'S KISS. I want to make ALL THE UBE THINGS. (PS: A pun that was missed out on? PANDA COTTA, okay, I'm just sayin.) ... show more

  • This book is highly recommended
What an amazing book and I can tell just by looking at the book that the author took her time to make sure that the recipes were very explanatory and easy to follow . Let me just say also that I’m in Awe with The mouth-watering pictures. What a teaser that it makes you want to get up and make them. This kind of book is worth buying as a gift to your family and friends. Congratulations, Kat and I will make sure to bring this book so that you can personally sign it 💜 ... show more

  • Beautiful and creative!
I've been wanting to try a recipe from this book for a long time, and the Super Easy Milk Bread was calling out to me! The instructions were easy to follow, and the author also had a YouTube video that I watched for more insight on how to get that pillowy, pull-apart texture of milk bread. Although this is my first time ever baking bread, I think the end result came out pretty decently, and it just goes to show that this is a book in which both novices and experts will find value if they are interested in the art of baking Asian-inspired goods. The pictures of the author's creations are absolutely gorgeous, and she also shares fun, quirky stories behind each recipe. Since I no longer have easy access to these types of Asian treats where I currently live, I am so glad that I at least have this book to help me recreate the foods that I remember so fondly whenever I have a hankering for a taste of home. ... show more

  • Gorgeous book with twists on classics
Don't make the same mistake as I did by reading this cookbook right before bed. Stomach grumbling ensued and I was irrationally upset that I didn't have any miso garlic milk bread buns or Japanese curry bread buns to snack on. This book has beautiful photography and as others mentioned, a great mix of traditional recipes and new inventive ones. One thing I especially loved is how a lot of the recipes have extra little tips you can implement or further twists on the recipe. I can't wait to try the one pot honey comb cake. I can practically taste the sweet, chewy, bouncy cake already. I have all the ingredients already, but still need to get my hands on some pandan extract. And lastly, I feel like there has been a greater focus on authenticity and connecting with our own cultures through food in recent years. I love this and have been diving more into the Chinese dishes that I grew up eating. There is nothing wrong with people taking an interest in the food of other cultures, but I can personally say that it means a lot to me to see an Asian cookbook by an Asian author. ... show more
