Description

The Mitutoyo 500-197-30 digital caliper has a 0 to 8" (0 to 200mm) measuring range with 0.0005" (0.01mm) increments for precision and an advanced onsite sensor (AOS) electromagnetic inductive sensor for resistance to dirt, oil, and water. Its digital readout LCD shows inch or metric units for versatility, and allows either absolute or incremental measurement readings. The electronic caliper measures inside, outside, depth, and step values for versatility and includes a protective case and SR44 silver oxide battery.Digital calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to take inside, outside, and step measurements. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it with gearless precision to take measurements. The reading is electronically generated and displayed on a digital, high-resolution screen as a single value. Digital calipers can take differential measurements, which are used to determine the difference in measurements between two objects, by zeroing the display at any point along the scale. Some digital calipers can switch between standard and metric units, and some can output readings to a computer or printer for recording measurements. Compared to dial calipers, digital calipers provide measurements that are faster, easier, and more error-free, but they are more fragile mechanically and electronically, and do not resist coolant well. Vernier calipers are more durable than digital calipers because they do not have internal moving parts, but they can be more difficult to read. I had a previous cheaper version, this helps me to ensure accuracy. The manufacturer is suppose to be one of the most efficient with the battery even when turned off.

Everything about this seems like the real deal. From the packaging to the fit and finish of the tool. With most Japanese products it doesn't seem like they have the American ideal of " yeah that will do" if it's not perfect it simply wont go out of the factory. From the folds on the paper in the manual, warranty card and certificate too little details like the staple holding the battery, it is obvious that great care and precision was used in every step of the manufacturing process. Important observations to note... The serial number on the certificate of inspection matches the serial number on the tool. Mine was shipped with the SR44 battery, an expensive battery that hardly any fakes use. There was no battery in the compartment, and it needed installation. Fakes commonly ship with a battery already installed (other than sr44) . Moving the caliper feels very clean and consistent. The case is high quality, with no foam inside. It's stamped PP 2 on the inside and stamped "Made In Japan" on the bottom. However I think there is a slight bend in the tail (as seen in one of the pictures) there is a noticeable resistance at about 3 inches, although it is very very minimal, something you would never notice unless you were scrutinizing it. But it mostly went away after a wipe down. I've run it from 0 to 8 inches rapidly dozens of times and it always returns to 0.00mm. Thankfully the measurements are the same from the tip of the jaws to the largest part. I am also being really picky, it blow's the two other calipers I have out of the water. I would highly recommend this caliper, especially for the price from amazon. I picked it up for 160 after tax and have seen it over 200 at local shops.. If it's not legit, It's an incredible fake and I would still say it's worth the money. But I highly doubt it is a fake especially after successfully registering it on Mitutoyo's website. I have a feeling it will last a life time with decent care ... show more
