  • Elated and then disappointed (update)
Style: 308pro
The reel itself is easily 5 stars. Mitchell service, '-0'. 'I so wanted this new reel. Even queried Mitchell to make sure that additional spools were available - they assured me that they were, even gave me the price and part number and a phone # to call when I was ready. So I get the new Mitchell 308Pro reel and load it with expensive braided line, then I called Mitchell to purchase additional spools. Then the disappointment - "I'm sorry sir, if we mislead you, these spools won't be available for at least six month, if then." I've got till the end of the month to return this reel. Meanwhile, I'm looking for a different reel that I can purchase additional spools at the same time I purchase the reel. It won't be a Mitchell. Update: All is well again in River City. The reel is still 5 stars, Mitchell is now 3 stars: Before returning the reel to Amazon I decided to try one more time with Mitchell. I sent them another email expressing my disappointment with Mitchell and their poor customer service. Within hours I received a response from Mitchell apologizing for the mix-up and assuring me that, ".... I have just personally conducted a physical check and the spools you requested are in stock, please try again...." (or something to that effect). Long story short, two new spools for my new Mitchell 308Pro are on the way. Update: Discovered a problem with the design - when you remove a spool there are two small pieces, the main shaft washer and the main shaft ratchet can fall off the main shaft if you aren't careful. Have reported my concern to Mitchell but not expecting them to get all excited about the issue. As a side note, this is not a problem with my 55 year old Mitchell 309 which is basically the same size as the new 308 (in the original Mitchell, 308's were right hand only, 309's are left hand only. The new 308 can be changed to left or right as desired.) ... show more

  • Glad Mitchell is back...
Style: 308pro
The creator of the modern spinning reel brand known as Mitchell has been defunct since 1989/1990 and just last year the brand came back. For the life of me I couldn't find one locally so I came here to get the 308 Pro model. Here's some specs to throw at you on this model... Ball Bearings: 10 Gear Ratio: 5.8:1 Retrieve Per Turn: 30.5" Max Drag: 14lb. Weight: 8.9oz Mono Line Capacity: 6/185,8/130,10/110 (lb/yds) Braid Line Capacity: 6/275,8/190,10/160 (lb/yds) Basically the 308 and 300 are the same caliber you'll just get more spool capacity with the 300 model. So why 4 stars as that question arouses...that's a good question. When I first looked into the revival of the Mitchell brand I was taken to their UK site and learned the Jarden Corporation (owners of Penn,Shakespeare, and Spider Wire) was behind bringing back this brand...which is a good thing.Presentation wise everything was well machined and almost flawless(needed a dab of oil). One thing that made me look into the origin of manufacture was that the handle arm came right off as it felt loosely screwed on.No damage to the threads or machining damage of any kind it just wasn't screwed on enough.Looking on the box there were those three words by the UPC 'Made in China'.Two things to say regarding that, for starters Mitchell's were made in France so I was hoping this advanced reel would have been made somewhere in Europe..gotta love German engineering.Secondly it's always been the trend to buy a popular defunct brand and outsource it as a cheap product through Chinese manufacturing with negative outcomes in comparison. However you can't really put these new models up against the originals because reels advance so this is like a rebirth of the Mitchell name as technology progressed.I wouldn't necessarily say the Mitchell 308 Pro is the excuse not to buy a $100 American made reel but I'll admit through imported manufacturing I certainly got my dollars worth... *Solid as hell with a double anodized aluminum spool and body *The polymeric casing actually feels solid and more like an acetal resin(delrin) and the bail halo is effective at keeping line from tangling. *Looks great and everything functions smoothly with slick drag and cast. Some might not know this but the 300 Series still has an anti reverse switch. German or American made I would have given this reel 5-stars but the initial impression from the moment I took it out of the box and checked it out...I suspected china made right away and was right. However it's nice to see the 308 Pro back again possessing traits of the old Mitchell 300 Series and bringing features of the updated reels to carry on a legacy..hopefully for good this time. * ... show more

  • Mitchell Spinning Reels are the Best!!!
Style: 308pro
Mitchell spinning reels are the best on the market or at a minimum, among the best. I have been using spinning reels for well over 40 years. The most annoying problem I've had with other brands of spinning reels is premature bail locking when casting. I have never owned spinning reels that has such smooth casting and unbelievable smooth retrieve as does the Mitchell 300 series.....and absolutely no premature bail locking. I am so satisfied with Mitchell, that I am changing out all of my other brand of spinning reels to the Mitchell brand. Not only is it a qualify spinning reel, but the price is great!!! ... show more

My Dad always went with Mitchell reels. So I have this a shot. Light weight and smooth. Also cast fantastic. Significant upgrade over my old reel. We’ll worth the price. Also good value in my opinion.

  • smooth and casts a mile!
I replaced a Kast King Sharky III w/ this Mitchell 308PRO and I gotta say I'm really impressed. The Sharky III broke on only after a few uses, I do not recommend that product. This reel however is amazing for the price. It's really smooth and it can't believe how well this casts. I've got 10lb braid on it and it cast just as well as my Shimano Stradic Ci4+. The drag is not as sensitive as I'd like it to be... I find that I have to tighten it more than my other reels to notice the tension, but it works fine once you get used to it. I've been using this as my salt reel for fishing off the jetties and I've pulled legal spotted bay bass, sand bass, calico, and halibut off this reel. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. ... show more
