Description

The Mishimoto MINI Cooper S radiator was designed and engineered as a direct OEM fit; no cutting, fabrication or modification will be required for installation. The radiator is made with a two row brazed aluminum core and TIG welded polished aluminum end tanks. Replacing the OEM radiator on a MINI Cooper S with an aluminum performance radiator from Mishimoto will improve cooling capacity and keep the engine cool to prevent overheating. • Cooling the way it should be - don't waste money on a cheap radiator
Bought this back in February, and finally installed it about 3 weeks ago. Here are my thoughts on this product. I had previously installed a Spectra brand when I needed a radiator, back in March of 2014. The Spectra worked, but not as well as the stock radiator. But a radiator is a radiator, right? And it was cheap. Well, as I said, the Spectra worked. But there were issues. When it is hot, the temps on a Mini can climb pretty high before the low speed fan turns on. The thermostat is a 195 degree open, and when driving my Ultragauge would indicate engine temps staying pretty solid on 194. Fair enough. But slow to a crawl or sit idling, and the temps would quickly climb up to the 220+ range, then the fan turns on and the temp would drop down to 210 or so. Get moving and down it goes back to 194. An easy workaround to this is to turn on the A/C. Doing so causes the computer to turn the cooling fan on high. Then temps would then quickly fall back to 200 or so. Sounds counter-intuitive to turn on the A/C when the car is getting that hot, but it works. Of course, you won't know this if you only have the stock temp gauge. The stock gauge goes up to the center range and stays there. The only time it goes higher is if the car is about to overheat. So in essence it is fancy idiot light. So I lived with that over two summers. But I decided to try the Mishimoto to see if there was any improvement. Last weekend it was a balmy 113 degrees. A nice Phoenix weekend. I rolled down the windows and suffered without A/C for a while just to see what idling and slow traffic would do to the engine temps. The temp varied slightly. 194. 199. 192. 195. Couple of times it briefly hit 201, then dropped. This is with no A/C, while idling or crawling slow in 113 degree heat. Wow. Definite improvement. In fact, the hottest I have seen the car now was on the freeway doing 75 ish, with the A/C on and slight uphill climb. Then it has hit 206. Oddly, it seems that now running the A/C adds a few degrees of temp, but turning it off causes the temp to drop. This is opposite to what I had lived with before. But considering the low temps it is running, I'm not complaining. Just curious why it does that. Installation: The Mishimoto is very pretty. And thick. Much thicker than the Spectra, and thicker than the stock radiator. Some might even say Phat. ;-) It is a very tight fit in the plastic housing/cooling fan assembly. Forget using the stock plastic retaining pins in the upper corners - they are too fragile. I went and bought two bolts and nylon locknuts, and four fairly wide washers to spread any forces. And the two stock rubber mounts that go over the corner tabs can be re-used but I found that, due to their odd shape and the thickness of the radiator, I had to swap them to the opposite side and flip them over. Then it is a matter of slowly working the radiator into fan housing, and using the bolts to help pull it into place. Very tight fit, and be careful not damage anything, especially the radiator fins. Negatives: I give it 5 stars due to the outstanding cooling. It really is great. The installation into the housing was a pain though, but I won't dock it a star for that. I almost did dock a star for one problem though. I'm not sure if this is problem with just my radiator, or if this is a problem with all the ones of this model. If a Mishimoto rep reads this, feel free to chime in and clarify. The radiator comes with the mounting provision for the A/C condenser/dryer assembly on the front. At least it came with 3/4 of the mounting provision. There are threaded fittings for the two bolts - one upper left and one upper right. And there is a little U-shaped tab on the drivers side for a rubber-covered tab on the condenser to slide into. But what is missing is the cup on the passenger side that the condenser dryer sits on. So the condenser/dryer is unsupported on the passenger side, except by the bolt above. And, unfortunately, that bolt is in a plastic housing attached to the top of the dryer. So it does not inspire a lot of confidence. (the bolt on the other side is through an aluminum tab attached to the condenser). My solution was to secure that corner using some zip ties. It is not perfect, but seems workable. Takes some of the stress off the bolt above, but it will need to be checked regularly. It really should have that little cup there though. Just a simple little shelf, with a small lip around it. Then the dryer can sit solidly in place, with its little rubber boot on the cup. Again, not sure if the missing cup is an oversite on my unit, or problem common to all of this model. It really should be there. But, for appearance, overall build quality, outstanding warranty, and superior cooling, I give it the full 5 stars. ... show more

  • Great product. I installed it in my R53 today ...
Great product. I installed it in my R53 today and it has been amazing so far. The biggest problem I am having right now is that it cools so much better that since I filled up the coolant the thermostat doesn't open for more than a few seconds so there is no time to bleed the system at the bleeder screws, but I will just take them out while it is off and trickle coolant in to top it up. Biggest caution (and one that almost cost it a star) is that this radiator is significantly thicker than stock and I found it necessary to trim and file a little bit to get it into place, had to bend the drivers-side tab that holds the condenser and file out the hole through the condenser for the bolt that hold it to the radiator. Overall not a deal-breaker but something to be aware of. ... show more

  • POS, develops leaks at core to side tank braze points.
Initial opinion upon receiving in a well protected package is that of heavy duty construction all aluminum that has a perfect/exact fit when used with the mini cooper s original BMW oem radiator support. May not fit well in aftermarket radiator supports. Three months of use developed a leak at the upper right corner at the side tank and core braze point. Ordered a replacement and the replacement developed a leak in the same location. I now do not recommend this non quality Chinese made product marketed and sold by a US company. This is not made in the USA! ... show more

  • The first and last performance radiator your MINI will ever need
The Mishimoto Aluminum Performance Radiator is the third replacement radiator I've had on my 2004 MINI Cooper S since I bought it in 2007, and will likely be the last. Not only is the stock MINI radiator inferior in design (plastic tanks on a radiator? Really, BMW?), but it's predictably inferior in performance as well. I've had frequent overheating problems with my MINI, but I'm hoping that this latest round of repairs, of which the Mishimoto is the centerpiece, will solve the issue for a while. The Mishimoto is beautifully made -- all aluminum, a brazed aluminum core, TIG welded and polished tanks -- and fits perfectly. To top it off, it carries a no-questions-asked lifetime warranty. It looks beautiful installed in my car. I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces on my 60 mile (total) daily commute, starting tomorrow... ... show more

  • Super nice product
Super nice product. This is what Mini should have put in considering how much work it is to replace the radiator. This is not quite a exact fit and if you look you can see it requires longer bolts to hold radiator in. The pegs at the bottom do not allow it to drop in and requires a bit of back force hence the longer bolts to get it into place. This is a bit time consuming but well worth it. Not sure if this is for all models but it was the case on my 2004.Wish I had a couple of window stickers after all that(hint) Awesome product and shame on Mini for using so much plastic in the engine compartment. Edit. This has sprung a leak after 5 months.labor estimate alone is over 400 USD. Edit Second one failed(warranty replacement) after 8 months. I am over 1200 now in labor and went back to stock.Could not afford to take chance on third installment and ran out of time waiting on Mishimoto to ship my product. I guess they though I was a trying to rip them off?As they say once bitten twice shy. I wont be installing the third one. I believe this is too large for the R53 and does not allow room for the flex that this car needs. This is not at all a direct fit as stated above and is very tight. My loss. Very dissapointed with both product and customer service. Selling last replacement if anyone is interested. My guess is they wont warranty it but it will be affordable. ... show more
